The Choice: Christian Petracca or Paddy McCartin

There was a good Saints 'inside' clip around this time with Richo and his team mulling over pick 1 and deciding Paddy was the best selection

ย

Could someone pm me the article or post a summary.ย  Cheers.

essentially they rated trac higher as a player but he 'failed' one of those idiotic psychometric tests whereas mccartin 'passed' with flying colours in terms of the leadership he displayed etc

article also says we were picking brayshaw and lever if trac went at #1

there's nothing in this story that hasn't been discussed on these boards in the past

I call BS on this.

Koschitzke retired at the end of 2013 and Nick Riewoldt was getting on so St Kilda was keen to get a key forward & McCartin was the obvious choice asย he was the only key fwd among the top draft picks (McCartin, Petracca, Brayshaw).

Is this the only top 5 pick we have not screwed up?

Angus might be the other if he is truly back.

Umm, Clarry

Gee that Richo is not a very good judge ofย players, wonder what poor club has him now.ย

Poor buggers.

What a gigantic [censored] up by the Saints. Imagine how much better they would look with Trac in theirย ย team.ย
despite his concussion issues, Paddy never looked a star

Such aย  dumb test.ย  I wonder if we used the same test to pass on Dustin Martin twice?

that would've required us interviewing him...

$cully and trengrove were the consensus 'can't fail' top two picks that year

melbourne fc: hold my beer...

I know we rated Lever in that draft but pick 3 would have been a fair reach.ย

Nearly got him when we were going to trade Trengove to the Tigers. Big sliding doors moment.

Yep, would have netted pick 12. Door slide of door slides.ย

To be fair I don't think many of us would have predicted Trac's huge recent leap in focus and maturity.ย

yeah him too.

As for Watts, Toumpas, Scully, Trengove, Sylvia, McLean, Johnstone, Morton....

That is incorrect & re writing history.

Travis Johnstone & Jack Watts were pretty much unanimously regarded as the top picks in their year.ย  Scully & Trengove were unanimous for 1 & 2 in their year & Sylvia & McLean in the top 3 in their year (which was a thin year).

Toumpas & Morton are the only picks who were not generally regarded as certainties for number they were picked at.

I still believe they were the best picks at the time and any clubs with the top two pick would have taken them.ย

Trengove unlucky with the injurys and in hindsight I dont really blame Scully for leaving although the way he did so left a bad taste in the mouth.

Criminal not to at least interview Dusty though. Charges should be laid.

Haven't read the article, but my recollection is that we also would taken Mcartin number one, I call BS on the Lever part.

We were trying to get pick 12 to take him, but skeptical on using pick 3.

Yes agree with all. Johnstone.Watts.Scully.Trengove.Sylvia.Trac. Brayshaw.Oliver were all the forecast and popular picks.ย

Mclean was a late bolter. ย Boards had him top 10 but not up at pick 5. ย
Dees were keen on Kane Tenace, a pacy winger from Murray bushrangers. ย Tenace went to Cats at pick 7, won their best first year player after playing 15-16 games in year 1. ย He went off the boil and a few injuries and years later, he was delisted about 50-60 games only. ย

Toumpas was the bizarre one. Tipped to go to Giants in top 3 picks but they referred kid called Jono Orourke a bolter from mid teens range. Orourke was a spud. ย Went from giants to hawks and then delisted. ย Dees were set on Ollie Wines to partner Jack Viney. But Toumpas slid from top 3 and we grabbed him. ย Majority of us still are absolutely puzzled why we passed up on Wines.ย
ย

Morton was a strange one. Huge get at the time and was to be the prototype tall midfielder. ย First 30-40 games were very good. ย But his intensity and contested footy was poor and his skills were ultimately too slow and lacked penetration. ย Good endurance runner.ย

ย

Just when I doubted Richo had never added value to the Dees this bob up. Good onya Richo

Itโ€™s nice to have one draft year where the top picks we took have turned into players while the team with number one got no return.ย

Itโ€™s taken a little longer than we would like but Trac is starting to use the gifts he has, he looks so much better when he takes on the FIGJAM mentality. Thatโ€™s not to say he should be selfish but last week against the doggies he had the old look of not being sure.ย

Hopefully Christian can REALY make them regret not taking him today.ย

For Paddy, I think the Saints were desperate for a forward to take over from Reiwoldt.ย

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
