Is he our best full back since...?

Since my time properly following Melbourne (probably 1996), I can’t recall us having such a dominant full back.

Doesn’t have the media hype but his record speaks for itself. Takes the best key forward every week and keeps them quiet, as well as his (mostly) excellent kicking out of defence.

Showing the value of the pick 6 deal we did for him. Reads the play as good as WCE McGovern.

Don't think he'll get the nod over Andrews, though.

Couldn't have both?  May at FB, Andrews at CHB?

Sean Wight right now has him covered, but give it a few weeks...

A few friends and I were putting together the best Demons 22 of our lifetimes during the COVID off-season and full back was the position we really struggled with. Carroll was good for about one year, as were Ingerson, Frawley and Garland, so if May can keep up this consistency it won't be hard for him to be our best full back this century.

As for All Australian team, he's doing very well but there have been lots of good defenders this year. The ABC did a great piece on the competition for spots earlier this week, which is a helpful reminder that there are 18 clubs who reckon their defender is a lock for a spot: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-26/afl-defenders-ready-for-all-australian-team-battle-royale/12596418

Tonight spoke volumes that had probably already been said but seriously if Stephen May isn't playing tonight or has a honker we lose, plain and simple. The guy is making a bloody good case.

I questioned this trade last year.

So happy to be eating humble pie. The guy has been absolutely amazing down back this year. He is pretty much another captain for us in my eyes.

I would be shocked if he isn't All Australian this year.

Love the bloke. He’s my favourite player.

I completely agree. Absolutely love him.

He’s as incredibly accurate field kick for a guy his size and position. He took 6 intercept marks tonight and attacks the footy beautifully.

He doesn’t get the credit outside here but I think he’s been our most important player all season.

I reckon he has Nicho covered. Nicho was a great lockdown defender, but May has amazing intercept abilities which I’d liken to Rance.

Everyone did because of the pick 6 involvement.

But if you look at it as Hogan for May, its the biggest win ever especially when you consider we will get Hogan back this trade period for a 4th rounder.

Darcy Moore is a shoe in for one of the key posts, selectors will probably name Andrews as the other, but May should definitely be in the conversation. Either way, bloody glad we have him in the team.

If Tomlinson develops a little more as our other KPD, he’d have OMAC covered for mobility. Lever can be the loose defender (gave up a lot for virtually a tall flanker).

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
