Better but the dogs have the breeze in the 3rd so we need to keep the pressure up.

May has been magnificent for us.

Fritta bounced back with a nice goal.

Presuss finally doing what he had to do. He is taller and much more bigger than english. He needs to dominate those ruck contests and he started to hit it in the right spots.

We look the more dangerous side when we go forward, just need the midfield to lift, started to get going in that quarter

Once the clearances evened up that quarter, we comfortably had their measure. Dogs have an elite midfield so have to break even in this second half. In the arcs, Melbourne is clearly superior.

Agreed. We need to start winning clearances. Do that and I think we will win comfortably.
They are killing us when they get the easy clearance because they have so much speed they always have a man out.

We know which end is the scoring end. Smart move is to make Q3 a bog and play for the win in Q4. If we try to go head on in Q3, they will get a lead and then turn it into a bog in Q4 and we will lose.

Thank God for Viney and Langdon

Langdon very good. Very fast.

I think after today’s game it’s time to rest Pickett and bring in Bennell to play small forward. Pickett doesn’t give us enough.

His 2nd half would want to be pretty good to stay in.  Depending how they go in this 2nd half it could be Bedford for Picket and Harley for Harmes (if the FD deem him fit enough).

I it is always a worry with Pickett, Spargo and Hannan in the same side. They all are very low possession players

Spargo has offered nothing except 1 good tackle

Umps

Bulldogs mids on top - losing inside contest

Spargo and Pickett not effective

Defence
May Preuss Langdon our best

Agreed. He isn’t soft. He just can’t kick.

Yep.

Won't argue that he could have laid a better tackle on English in the first term, but he's had 8 kicks to go with 6 marks and a goal.  Plays his role for the team perfectly.

I reckon TMac is playing his guts out and going OK. He was the player chasing the Bulldogs player who was penalised for running too far.

needs to stop hitting it out wide (mostly to doggy outliers so far).... just dump it in close and let our boys do what they do best and muscle it from the inside to the out.

time to turn up the pressure on the doggies and win this game.

Kossie and Spargo, all they need to do this quarter is apply relentless pressure, keep it in the forward line

Interesting Open Mike coming

My heart breaks watching him. What a monumental [censored] up, one of many, by this club.

Which both did do in that second term.  Their pressure might not come up as stats, but they have been better as a game has gone on.

If they can hit the scoreboard in the second half it will be a massive bonus!

Steven May is showing why we so despately needed him. we wouldn't be in this game without him.

it's the opposite of our usual games, we aren't winning the contest, or inside 50's but we look really efficient and winning the game.

backing us in, but we need to take our chances.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
