very poorly written , most of which is old news and all of us in hindsight .....

Fyfe at pick 20 ....   lets see how many clubs didn't have Scully at pick 1 that year.

maybe he should have done a article on his time at carlton , every team has a could've and would've drafted this and that player 10 years later.

Draft revisionists are everywhere though MC.

Endeavouring to put high school age junior footballers in a numbered order of how good they are going to be 5 years down the track is crystal ball gazing at best.  But we're told otherwise.

Of course we've been a disappointment from an overall perspective but we were just dreadfully unlucky with our draft choices.  And if Petracca,  Brayshaw,  Oliver and the like had have been abject failures we'd be banging on about the draft (again)  Petracca & Brayshaw were standout juniors much like Scully & Trengove were.  And Oliver won the Morrish medal which has often been seen as a millstone.

Last year's failures were put down to 'off season surgeries' (by many) and now it's the coach who is in the gun.

I see our failures as an overall problem ... from the Board all the way down to the last player on the list.  And our list is not all that talented either especially when it comes to disposal skills and decision making skills.  A new coach isn't going to fix that in a hurry.

We need an injection of 6 top players if we're going to be a true contender.  A team generally needs at least 5 or 6 years as a true contender in order to be able to win 1 or maybe 2 flags.

We could jump up and fluke one but I don't like the odds on that happening.  I'd rather see the club build a great list of players and go from there.

He is right. There is plenty of evidence that the Melbourne brand is soft and badly managed.

Yes and the main reason i don’t think Goodwin will survive, but i am all for him proving me wrong.
One of our main faults for decades has been hiring first time coaches.
I am not blaming the person, but we need serious experience to reshape this old organization.

Malthouse ????

Bagging Melb for trading in Lever and May, this is same bloke who brought a broken Daisy to Carlton.

The bloke lost all credibility after his time at Carlton.

Fyfe was universally ranked as a low second rounder or high third round pick. He was a stroke of dumb luck being picked at 20 for Fremantle or they knew something no one else did about him. We got karma big time though for having top two picks and 4 first round picks. All duds for different reasons. As the Chinese say, 4 is the unluckiest number.

Thought it was time to stop reading when he said Lever and May were the same type of player.

You know why 4 is "unlucky"? Because the sound for the word that represents the number is similar to the sound of the word for death. Consequently, buildings don’t have 4th floors, much in the way that western buildings often don’t have 13th floors. I used to enjoy debunking such superstitious [censored] with my students, logically asserting that, given there is but one earth shared by all peoples, if either were true then all buildings in Australia with 4th floors would be unlucky and all buildings in *hin@ with 13th floors would be unlucky, and as they’re not, the power of the belief depends upon believing in the first place.... and is therefore bogus.

Not sure why I told you this. ‘Pose I just saw an opportunity for an anecdote. Belief is certainly powerful, however, and if MFC ever gets some we might win a flag...

one of the more fatuous 'articles' mick has ever come up - cliche after cliche, bearing no relevance to the 2020 side...save for extolling the virtues of four players and then comparing may and lever, two markedly different defenders

and the player picked up as a result of "trading dom tyson for josh kelly" (or bryce gibbs 2.0 as he appears to be) was none other than christian salem, who mick rates as one of the best four in the side

either do some actual research and reason-based analysis or stick to cliche and increasingly unreadable irrelevance

Rubbish article from a washed up old man desperately trying to remain relevant when his grasp on AFL flew out the window a decade ago.

Education broadens the mind. No apologies required.

he's a bitter and twisted ol' &$#@. How the hell did he only win 2 premierships in 10 years at West Coke with a state side at his disposal?

My favourite part is he mentions Salem as one of 4 quality players we have. Then says we traded the pick Kelly went for for Dom Tyson but no mention of Salem. The article cant decide whether it wants to trash our lack of culture, historical recruiting and trading or the coach and game plan. So why not a little bit from all three columns :)

Exactly right.

at that time we were rock bottom. To get Tyson and Salem instead of Kelly made sense. Tyson gave us an  immediate  lift .A lot of lazy research in the Malthouse piece and no reference to the brilliant recruiting this year

The only comment that was a real crack was the melbourne storm sweat on the gym floor, not ours.  That is a whack as you control how hard you work.

The rest is on repeat on every article about Melbourne for the past 20 years.  We are all frustrated that we can't address the ongoing issues at our club.

And I think that’s a real B S Line . I see no evidence

Mick please go and get pharked, please we don't need to hear you commentary.

Your thoughts and mannerisms are so outdated and illogical at this Junction of the season.

Go and right articles on Carlton you geriatric phark.

This along with Matthew Lloyd recently gives me the pip. The first three qtrs (admitedly we were poor at times ) against Crows Dermott the insufferable and his crew were just piling into Melbourne.

We have the makings of a good team. Goody is poor but trying and good teams work it out for themselves and eventually make the coach look good. Our worst issue is destabilisation from outside forces who have their own agendas

Have a crack at Hawthorn, who look [censored]. Dogs going nowhere, Collingwoods injuries and culture. But no, these weak b#stards want to take the easy route and pick on Melbourne. They can all f#ck  the f#ck off

Why didn't he have a go at Richmond? What kind of culture is going on there? Re: groping scandal.  No, it seems as long as everyone says sorry we all move on and go back to cliches about Melbourne. If we weren't in lockdown I suppose he would have dragged up the old we are all at the snow chestnut.

Only when we feel like it.
it’s not written in stone

Alot of demonlanders had LJ and Pickett in their votes. Madhouse probably doesn't rate their games because they weren't kicking along the boundary line.

  • CASEY: Collingwood

It was freezing cold at Mission Whitten Stadium where only the brave came out in the rain to watch a game that turned out to be as miserable as the weather.
The Casey Demons secured their third consecutive victory, earning the four premiership points and credit for defeating a highly regarded Collingwood side, but achieved little else. Apart perhaps from setting the scene for Monday’s big game at the MCG and the Ice Challenge that precedes it.
Neither team showcased significant skill in the bleak and greasy conditions, at a location that was far from either’s home territory. Even the field umpires forgot where they were and experienced a challenging evening, but no further comment is necessary.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
