Presumably the ridiculous 3 and 4 year contracts for KK and Preuss were Mahoney's idea too.

What were we screaming out for a few years back?

A proper back up ruckman for Max.  So we went out and got one and gave him a contract that would keep him around.  He can't do anything else but play in the ruck to be fair, but we got what we wanted.  When he plays on his own he can do enough to make up for what we would lose in Gawn.

If they were on minimum money I'm ok with these. All clubs have their journeymen... if you think about it we have 6 or 7. Unfortunately we haven't uncovered a gem but few clubs do these days.

I'm more concerned about the stagnation/deterioration of our better players.

FWIW if we have to keep Goodwin I'd try and get a replacement for Mahoney particularly if we are say 3-5 at Round 8.

not the right attitude ET

If you were a Pies supporter you would know that round 8 cannot finish before the Pies have played 8 games.

I’ll give you that.

At least they are unique, rather than the small herd mentality that prevails on here, where some posters will offer a statement, not an opinion, without knowing any of the facts, and that statement becomes fact, such as below

This clown will have traded more than the number 1 pick for a midget that can't get the ball and doesnt kick goals.

Not just that, but pick 6 for Steven May who was actually a free agent at the time. Picks for Lever. Just bad negotiators. Its really cost the club now, set us back 15 years at least. When you miss out on quality talent, and you are a bad football side, you are up sh*t creek without a paddle. I have always been vocal about overpaying at the draft table. It will come back to haunt us. We had an opportunity to have the best young list in the league. Amateurs in charge of list management compromised our future, now its to the point where we are looking at a bottom 6 finish and don't even have our draft pick. Well played North though, they did exactly what I would have.

I have had enough of Mahoney constantly avoiding scrutiny. He is an assistant coach doing the job of GM woefully.

No forward coach, 2 Picks for undersized defender, drafting a raw basket baller, Chaplin, Preuss, Richardson, Tomlinson, [censored] all success yet he continues to hide in the limelight while probably seeking more internal promotions.

Absolute journeyman taking the [censored] out of paying members for the last decade

Mahoney got Tomlinson as a wing player on a 4 year deal.

he also contributed to the 3/4 year extension for Goodwin.

Agree both the GM and coach need to go. Bring in a couple of people who know what sustained success is all about.

The CEO has time on his side, as he just entered the building, but once (if) we get new facilities, he may as well leave too, taking the board with him.

That way we'll have sparkling new facilities, with no inept board, CEO or coaches to ruin them. Then we might have a chance of teaching the few half decent player's we have how to properly play the simple game of football.

He gave away 3 first rounders for lever and may who have both struggled at the club. Gotta go for sure

Brought May, Langdon, Lever and Tomlinson to the club who were all very good tonight.

How he has kept his job is beyond me... has been in GM position since neeld... 10 years ago!!! Move on

Well things went quickly south under Neeld but improvement every year from 2014 to 2018 will keep the incumbents in place.

Mahoney has generally shown an ability to fix problems. It might take a while and isn't always pretty but things usually get dealt with.

The Misson era ended poorly but remember the days when we ended young players careers with injuries and the team clearly weren't fit enough, those days started to end once Misson was at the club for a while. Then when it was time for Misson to go Mahoney got Burgess.

When it was time for McCartney to go we added Richo. And tonight was a testament to the coaches getting  a far better structure.

When it was time to trade out a bunch of players who weren't up to the professional standard we did that and our players hopefully keep doing the right things.

The reasons to keep Mahoney are pretty simple. He's surely better at his job now than he was 10 years ago and if you look around the league for people with football and management experience - especially at a time where the league is cutting a huge chunk of footy department spending - you'll find there's very few good candidates.

When we have almost no injuries, to see how far off the Mark our list is astonishing. To need to rely on players such as ANB, Wagner, OMac, Smith, Spargo, Brown, Jones, Harmes, Frits co during a crunch game like today is disgusting.

How our list got in such a poor state is an indictment of Mahoney

Whilst our injuries aren't that key,

Hibberd, Hore, Jackson, Petty, Sparrow - you'd assume most if not all of these players would get a gig over others selected tonight.

I'll bite.

Who selected these guys to play?  Goodwin did.

Everyone of those you named above were speculative picks.

Oscar?  A pick in the 50s.

Smith?  Cat B rookie

Brown?  Added late as a free agent.

Harmes?  Rookie list

Fritsch?  A pick in the 30s.

These aren't the players we should be relying on.  They are the foot soldiers, some of which will never make it.  It's why they were late picks or rookies in the first place.

Mahoney has over seen some wins at the trade table as well as some misses.  That's life.  Right now he isn't the problem.  What we serve up on field is.

Also, you do nothing but support the feeling on this site that you're nothing more than a troll who only turns up after a loss by resurrecting this thread tonight.  Well done.

Mate if we can’t build a list of decent role players with speculative picks or other means to support our A graders we may as well just fold now and call it a day.

Keen to hear when Mahoney has won at the trade table, he always gets bent over during trade period from what I can recall

And anyway, Mahoney didn't select these guys.  Jason Taylor did.  Go and resurrect or make a thread on him.  If you're going to sink the boots in, at least aim it in the right direction.

His list manager isn’t he? Signed Harmes to 5 years, KK to 4 years. Traded Serong away for Pickett and Rivers.

From memory at the members forum they blamed our poor 2019 on injuries and lack of pre season, didn't even discuss list strength or depth. I knew that was a lie all along, our bottom 5 players are horrible

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
