There's no doubt he plays his best in the middle and he is clearly our best gut running mid when on song but why do the coaches need to take sole blame for this? I'm sorry but it's getting a bit trite having all these apparent AFL footballers who are playing the game when positions are most fluid who can only play in one position and can't even do a job in another.

Yes I'd love to see him back in the middle and would like nothing more than to see it but this lack of flexibility with our players has become extremely frustrating.

Played his best footy in the 2nd half of 2018 when Viney wasn't there. So yes I'd take Viney out who imo upsets our midfield mix. The fact Goodwin has even caught onto this shows why he hasn't improved as a coach.

Its also being smart in using your midfield mix.

Its no coincidence that we got our run on back in the back half of 2018 due to the tagging efforts of Harmes. Not only was he shutting down some of the best names in the league, he was going out and getting the pill himself.

We've taken the biggest strength we had in our side and turned into [censored].

I thnk this sums up what I was trying to say about "best 22".

Viney is best 22 but can only play in the guts. If he was on the wing, forward or back we'd be having the same convo about how he was playing poorly.

So put Harmes in the guts move Viney to a HBF (? won't work), HFF (? maybe). So who gets dropped? Not Fritsch or VDB. So probably Jones/Hannan.

I'm OK with trying that, but it is a balance. We now probably have an underperforming mid at HFF that we'll complain about.

This will be up there as one of the strangest and bizarre coaching moves in my time supporting this club.

A genuine gun midfielder when on song, and  is yet being wasted away in another position where he's barely fired a shot for majority of the year.

Yet another bizzaro Goody experiment that shows no signs of ending Dazzle.  What a complete and utter fail.

Rivers in for Harmes.  Harmes takes over from Sparrow in the middle, pushing forward at times.

Simples.

Harmes' confidence is shot. For his sake he needs dropping.

With that said, he should have tagged the Bont given his form last week.

Harmes has been great this year. This Demonland forum is full of fools.

Signed a 5 year deal last year didn't he? That's a heft contract to break.

Be that as it may, neither Harmes nor the MFC are benefiting ATM

I'm ok with giving him time, one poor season does not make him a liability by any stretch. But I definitely do not think we are making the most of his strengths, and imo he can't be happy with his form or where he is playing.

If Harmes has had a great season then i'm Uncle's monkey.

If he can’t be fit into the midfield, then play him forward. He’s a capable mark and has been a goal kicker in the past. He’s been woeful in defense and shouldn’t be in the team on current form. Send him forward and get his confidence back up by playing him to his strengths.

We need to stop moving players around.  He is out of form, try some one else.  Rivers has shown more this year, Harmes has got games on past years form

Spot on. Same with Brayshaw. If they are good footballers they should be able to play good football in any position. It's weird how some of our players just look deplorable when asked to play a role other than their preferred. Could be more an attitude thing than anything else.

Having said that, we may also need to accept that some of our guys just aren't that good. The ability to perform at a consistent level is a huge part of how a player should be measured, and Harmes along with all but Oliver and maybe Gawn fail that test badly.

Rivers to replace him for the love of god

Absolutely. Goodloss has no idea. Kept Harmes at half back but he was lost.
We needed to TAG THE BONT or TAG MACRAE. No let them run free. Ffs.
Harmes needed to go to either. He can tag and get into the contest.

Yep Harmes is certainly being wasted.

Brayshaw moves back into the midfield and bazinga he hits form.

Move Harmes back to tagger role and I bet he would come into some form.

Doesn’t seem all that hard to figure out but it seems it might be for some.

Surely Goodwin doesn’t even recognise such a role exists.  Didn’t even think of tagging Bont who towelled us up.

Yep seems to be stubborn and thinks one day it will click.

When or if that day comes I think Goodwin will be long gone.

The form of James like TM, is a mystery and kills us, but so  does our inconsistency. Some of our more senior players turn up every third or fourth week. ( Brayshaw, Melksham, Salem).

These blokes should be ‘hard as flint’ ,turn up every week, professionals by now, like May is turning out to be.

There's an old saying Dockett which i'm sure you've heard plenty of times....

Is Harmes actually any good?

Trade bait.

Isn't he contracted for another 3-4 years?

Hard to offload, assuming we want to, with that sort of contract hanging over his head, surely?

I reckon the majority of Demonland just want more out of Harmes and believe he could offer the team more up the ground.

Who does he replace?

Well, probably Sparrow and play Rivers off half back. He can even have some of Sparrow's midfield minutes.

Fair call.

While we need depth you're also asking an 18 yo whos had 0 pre seasons to hold down a position and or stop an opponent.

It's a tough call because we need depth but have depth where we dont need it.

Whats even worse is there is no versatility in the players we have.

For example you cant throw Viney or Brayshaw in a forward pocket... we just dont have the quality in depth.

Would love some more run and ground ball winners. A half decent rebounding defender would be nice as well.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
