Money....

the AFL would love a split first round of finals.

Won't happen but a first week where the top 4 play and followed by the second week where the bottom four play.

Week 3 losers of week 1 play winners of week 2.

Everyone gets a rest and you get an extra week of big TV money.

You could compress the first 3 weeks as outlined above into two weeks if you wanted to add weekday fixtures

Not sure if serious, but I'm interested in what other people think. I am in no doubt the AFL will be considering the merits or otherwise of daily footy as part of a "normal" season. While I understand why it has been necessary this year, I'm dead against it in a "normal" year. Apart from anything else, I'm not interested in attending a match on a working week night, unless the following day is a public holiday. I'm also against it because I believe too much football devalues the product. In addition, apart from public holidays, I find that compacting nine games per round into three days enhances the feel of sporting warfare. The alternative, of single and sometimes double games each day provides a drip-feed approach with no sense of theatre.   

What does everyone else think?

The AFL and broadcasters are currently enamoured with the huge tv audiences for weeknight games. 

I'm sure there are intelligent enough people to realise that is because Victorians don't have to get kids ready for school and because we can't go watch games live.  Not to mention there is no other entertainment or socialising allowed.

When there is some normality to our lives people won't be watching football on tv so much.

But in a 'normal' season I won't be watching much footy on tv other than Demon games.   And hopefully we won't be fixtured with many midweek games because it will be difficult to watch them live even if in Melb.  It is a 'no' from me for midweek games.

 

On the subject of normality, Wilson said on FC last night that the AFL think that footy may not start until May/June next year if covid is still an issue in Victoria where crows aren't allowed or restricted.  That in itself is such a scary thought.  So the season would start late or the first half played interstate.  There is a fair chance of condensed fixtures again next year.

The every day footy is obviously a function of the times but I have no issue with weekly Monday and Thursday games with special event games on other week nights.

Crowd attendance is secondary these days to what the media companies will pay.  (yes I know some may complain).

Game starting times and mid game breaks may need to be reviewed to ensure the games are finished before 10pm. (Perhaps this will mean the continuance of 16 minute quarters.)

More evening product opens up the possibility of other media companies paying for particular slots. Example Optus could have Monday night leaving Thursday and Sunday as  Foxtel nights. FTA would get Friday and Saturday.

From a personal viewpoint I am still watching three games a week. One thing I do is watch on half hour delay thus allowing the Kayo 30 second FF to eliminate stoppages and breaks between goals etc.

I don't like Monday or Thursday nigt games, unless the following day is a public holiday. I would, however, enjoy regular Sunday night football, whether the next day is a public holiday or not.

Does anyone have any concrete proof of whether we stay in Cairns for the 2 games? 

I'm not so sure that is the case. For the second time I've seen reference that we fly in and out for both matches (AFL website today - The run home) 

So that will be 3 X 2 hour return flights in 9 days. That is a pretty big ask in my opinion.

I didn't say I was against the idea, it would certainly suit us.

I am just saying it would be crazy to have a pre-finals bye as the main mission has been to try to fit in 17 games + finals  ASAP

I've enjoyed having footy on TV every night whilst I'm stuck at home.

I wont enjoy it anywhere near as much if 2021 is "normal".

For one, who wants to go to the footy on a Tuesday or Wednesday night? I want the opportunity to see my team play in person, not just on a screen.

Saturation of the product is also more likely to lead to dissatisfaction. 

If 2021 is compromised again due to COVID, I expect we'll see it again, but if we were forecasting a "normal" fixture, I don't want to see a compressed fixture anywhere at all.

Surely given that cases are heading in the right direction and us learning from our fatal mistakes between the first and the second wave, we''ll have games with 25-50% capacity next year in Victoria, starting from March or April. Not June as Wilson is fear mongering.

We can't just spend the rest of our lives locked up.

I'd be ok with midweek games if the season is extended to more than 22 games as I don't want to lose the social element around our matches that take place on the weekend.

Yeah and now that the case numbers are dropping the good old Vic premier (whose name I will not utter)  is urging more people to go get tested ... so sadly predictable.  The guy looked panicked up there.   Cant have those cases numbers coming down, can we? 

I think the vast majority of people have woken up finally.

Please DO NOT get tested unless you want to be locked inside forever.

TV rights provide roughly $20M per round.

Two extra prime time games (Thursday and Monday) is probably worth two to three million a week minimum from the TV companies.

To make up that kind of money from crowd attendances is impossible.

For years MFC has been complaining about lack of exposure. More evening games could in fact be the saviour of the lesser clubs.

I only realised it was Eddie a few seconds later. He's older-looking and taller than I imagined. 

And then it clicked they were playing here on Friday. I wish I got the chance to ask him about his shorts. 

He was jogging along an uneven cement footpath beside a busy road. Seems strange to me.

If you go down this path, you’ll drive yourself mad. The AFL fixture is always based on maximising revenue, with equity coming a very distant second. Given the logistic complexity, and whatever agenda Gil’s driving this year, I really think goody’s advice of “whoever, where-ever, whenever ” is the most peaceful place to be.

Some of the ideas lately around this are ridiculous. I heard Andy Maher and Bob Murphy discussing having the frenzy again next year because you 'really only need 10,000 people to make it a great atmosphere'.

Might be true but gee makes the building big stadiums idea a solid fiscal investment doesn't it?

given that next year's season won't start til the end of may / start of june, apparently, i think a 'frenzy' is inevitable
