Fixture 2020 (COVID Edition)

I can see both the Lions and Suns ending up with a dream run of games played in their home state.  Both these teams have barely traveled to play this season and unless COVID-19 just 'goes away one day' in Melbourne, the opportunities for them to play anywhere else but Queensland are rapidly running out.

Thankfully we won’t have to play the Kangas in Hobart where they would have beaten us by 2 points after a blustery afternoon ending in rain.

Anywhere else, we beat them by 50 points. Metricon or the Gabba a bonus.

WA just announced Phase 5 delayed until August 15 at least.

Phase 5 is when full crowds are allowed at the football.Until then max crowd of 30k

I'm not unhappy about this, with apologies to our Tassie fans.

But it was an unfair game and we should not be subjected to playing Norf in Tassie given how much upheaval we have already endured this season, and given we will most likely forgo a bye to play the Essendon game.

Fingers crossed this game gets played in QLD, or even NT will do me fine.

'Chaos' is a bit melodramatic by whoever wrote that.

Have the games in Qld.  The week of our Nth game there is only one game at each of Gabba and Metricon.  Simples.

Article in today's Age about how the AFL can't afford to allow the Swans to become "Ugly Ducklings Again".

Forty years in Sydney and still no decent following. What hope GWS, GCS and Brisbane.

Get ready for more concessions

They already got Heeney, Mills & Blakey for nothing as well as COLA which helped them pinch Buddy. What they can't miss the finals more than one year in succession? May as well just creat divisions/conferences if you want to ensure certain teams have a better chance at finals every year.

More importantly, any chance we'll get to see the boys play at the G this year? Finals?

Absolutely hanging out for a game of footy live this year.

Everyone's different, but I wouldn't be surprised if some players in the Maroochydore hub might like the opportunity to go to Cairns for 2 to 3 weeks just for a change of scenery. It must be very limiting being in a hub, wherever it is located and however nice it is, with all the restrictions in place.

Heaven forbid they make us go to Cairns. What do I call the match preview?

Further north of the border?

Enough, please.

Not a bad result for us. Should mean the game is in Queensland, which will mean we don't have to move between three states in those four rounds, and avoids giving up an away game to North.

This will be the fourth time this season one of our games has been affected by COVID: Round 1 (played after the suspension announcement), Round 3 (Essendon game postponed), Round 5 (opponent/state switch), now Round 11 (state switch, possible day/time switch).

Probably played Ben Brown in form if we played in Hobart

The AFL should just bite the bullet and permanently relocate the Kangaroos to Cairns and change the club's name to Far North Melbourne

I sense that they are softening us all up to be able to pay Buddy out outside the salary cap.

What are the odds it’s North and Dees to Cairns now... 1/10?

Too easy. That’s the obvious ANSWER. MFC must pursue Gabba option.

But Gil will probably schedule Cairns to have us travel more than anyone !!!

I doubt it simply because it's too soon.

One of the driving forces for the Cairns hub is money into the North. That will require two teams to relocate for over two weeks.  Hard to make that happen in the present block of announced matches.

BTW Bulldogs used to play in Cairns. Perhaps it could be them and the Suns.

If so we could end up playing the Dogs in Cairns.

All rather academic if we lose the next two games... so fingers crossed

Very much glad we’ve been spared the obligatory 1-6 point loss down in Tassie to inevitably derail our season.
North play that ground very well and have a genuine home ground advantage.

With that being said can the TAS government grant special exemption for AFL games?

Lions and/or Suns should be required to travel up to Cairns due to their seriously lack of travel on the road ahead.

I spoke to Gil. He will reschedule the Dees game to the week when we play the Bombers. 4 games in 7 days -“  Footy will find a way to get through it” he commented.

Metricon and Gabba are free on the Sunday we are playing.

If we play roos at either ground it is a realltt fantastic result for us. We instantly go from one of the worst draws in the FOF block to one of the best.

The Tassie game was the wrinkle in the onion. Play on Thursday night in SA, hotel over night, fly to Tassie Friday. Another hotel for two nights. And fly out Sunday night, getting back to base late. Two flights.

Or SA, hotel overnight, qld,Tassie and back to base. Three flights

Both options rubbish. Made more so by playing at night in clear freezing conditions

But SA , hotel over night,  back to base and family, Friday and chill in the resort where you are all set up.

And recovery is a nice swim or game of golf in 23 degrees sunshine. One flight.

Bus to the game Sunday.

Ideally a day  game but even if a night game it won't be anywhere near freezing and will be at a ground with stands (so np risk of the tunnel gale they can cop at blundstone).

And crucially roos won't have any 'home ground advatage or support.

Love it.

Surprised by the lack of celebration. The Tasmania-border-closure will probably be season-defining.

Any sign of a periscope Skuit?

The game MUST be at Metricon or Gabba.  No reason for it to be anywhere else.

Surely the AFL can not shaft us again.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
