There not being much footy on after rd 1, I watched the replay a number of times.  Brown grassed five marks that were relative sitters (ie not contested).  None of that was due to the delivery, he just wasn't very good in that game - he was dropped for a reason.

    You should get a gig with the MFC list management department with that kind of foresight.

    Finlayson was a revelation last year and would’ve been one of the biggest bargain trades of all time.

    With that in mind, I want to see Melksham tag Stewart and make him accountable.  I want to see TMc go to Blicavs, which leaves Harry Taylor.  I'd bring in Brown or Weid to play on Taylor (Brown if all the highlights we've seen are all the highlights).  Have Hunt playing on Tuohy.

    I'm reluctant to make a change, but could see Brown for Hannan (unlucky for Mitch, I'm a fan, but I think it gives us better balance).

    Realistically, Geelong should be an easy team to match up on for us.  We have players that should be able to beat most of theirs, but our consistency across 4 quarters is what always brings us unstuck against this mob.  When we get it right, we generally outplay them.

     

     

    Why bring in Brown for Hannan just so Harry Taylor has someone to pick up. Your playing into what Geelong want. Why not make Taylor pickup Hannan/Bennell etc which if delivery is right is a massive match up in our way. 

    or with Stanley injured and if we go in with only 1 tall I wouldn't be surprised if they put Blicvas in the ruck to exploit Gawns run .

    You missed my point. I was using the Pies as the model for a successful team structure and how Goody and the club appear to be copying it. They have 1 key marking forward who takes contested marks, Mihocheck plus a ruckman the rest are contested ball winners who run and lead. You don't need high marking key position players to be successful

    Yep. On the AFL website they were saying Geelong may need to drop Taylor to account for our smalls.

    Make them play to our strengths, not the other way around.

    Grimes Times, you have highlighted to be risk - "if our delivery is right".  I haven't seen "right" for close to 18 months.  If we go in with a Hannan vs Taylor type of match up, if our delivery isn't right we will get flogged.  The Geelong defence is too consistent, especially up against our terribly inconsistent forward 50 delivery.

    Brown (or Weid) are capable of competing in the air if our delivery is off, which will bring the ball to ground for our smalls/medium size forwards.  If our delivery is on, Brown/Weid are more than capable of taking Taylor to the cleaners.

    We actually need Taylor playing to give ourselves a better chance.

    Blicavs won't play sole ruck, they will bring in Fort.  You can put your house on that.

    It seems to me that as you say Goody is modelling the forward line structure (and perhaps the defensive structure too) on the model employed by Collingwood. Tmac is filling the Mihocheck role and he is surrounded by medium, mobile marking targets such as Hannan, VDB and Melksham. With Kozzie playing the small crumbing role, Bennell the skilled deliverer and Fritter the finisher.  

    I wonder if that sort of mobile structure helps disrupt an opposition''s zone system and also stretch and disrupt their defensive system as most teams have at least two to three bigs as key members of their back six. Geelong worrying about picking Taylor or not is an example of this issue.

    The other potential benefit of a more mobile forward line is an ability for that group to push up the ground and provide a defensive zone or wall something the pies are brilliant at.

    And something we are woeful at, at present. Hopefully once the forward line gel they'll get better at this, but we are just so easy to score against on the rebound at present.

    Problem with this vs Geelong is that their smaller/medium size half backs are far better than our smaller/medium size half forwards.

    We're talking;

    Hunt, ANB, AVB, Melksham, Fritsch, Bennell, Pickett, Hannan

    vs

    Stewart, Tuohy, Bews, Kolodjashnij, Jordan Clark (who I rate highly)

    I think this area is Geelong's strength, moreso than their key defenders.  That's why we must put in a lot of time working out our match-ups against them, and that's why I would be trying to pick a team that is designed to limit our opponent's strengths.

    The Geelong side, week to week, make very few changes, which is why they know and player their role so well.

    I can't imagine off the back of an intraclub match they will be making many if any changes. The only one I can see happening is Brown in for Hannan. Just on Hannan's selection for last round was there any word in particular as to what had prompted his selections? I do see him being (somehow) squeezed into the best 22 when he's fit but we hadn't really heard much about his progress and then *boom* there he was.

    have a look at how many direct involvements he had in the chains for goals in the intraclub

    he'll play i reckon

    if they're going to bring in a 'tall' it might be avb who is squeezed out

    I think they'll try and go with a big body midfield to dominate Geelong in that area, so AVB plays for me. i wouldn't be surprised if Brown comes in for someone though. we are really lacking a target with TMAC out of form, not sure who would go out.

    • NON-MFC: Round 09

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
