Hhhmmmm

Harmes off half back is yuck.

Brayshaw ain’t anything but a mid.

Fwdline looks average to say the least, Smith has to play fwd and I still think we’ve not got enough.
A second gamer and 2 blokes who have hardly played in how long.

For the love of god stick TMac in the goal square and let him roam no further than the 50m arc. Tell him to Be aggressive and bash and crash the opposition if he can’t mark it.

Not to derail the thread, Red but Mama Told Me not to Come was written by Randy Newman and covered by Three Dog Night, Wilson Pickett and many others.

Didn't know that.

Thoughts on Essendon forwardline?

With Langford and Stringer on the bench, it is a bit taller than ours, but yes I see your point.

Looking like Smith might play forward at some stage for us then.

Last chance for Smith I guess to prove  his worth. Must play somewhere on the forward line  or warm the bench all day.

I guess he keeps his spot because of team balance or because he is needed to bash into the opposition or maybe injurer the opposition by .accidentally falling on them. Maybe team moral. or Goody forgot to drop him. or l don't know.      I give up.

Or, you’re simply wrong. Your comment in an earlier post that Smith was deplorable or disgusting Last week and it was one of the worst games from a Dee that you’ve ever seen was embarrassingly stupid.

Smith will not play forward, he has trained all preseason as a defender and played the majority of his career as a defender, we have an abundance of mid forwards named in this weeks team and he will not be one of them.

Agreed. I think we're out of balance. Would rather Smith out for Lockhart to help combat the Essendon small forwards. Hannan out for Weid (or Jackson). We risk he aerial domination that the Eagles defence had against us without another tall target Hurley, Hooker & Francis will have a field day unless we either a) hit up targets lace out or b) roll the bloody pill along the ground

Gutsy and correct move omitting Jones. Didn't think they'd do that

1.That is your opinion and l have mine. IMO you should buy yourself a pair glasses to watch the game.

2. Do not misquote me  I did not say disgusting and deplorable get your facts right  You are embarrassing yourself .

I also did not say it was one of the worst games from a DEE that i have ever seen..

In finishing this off don't waste my time. Read the post properly.   LOOK who is Stupid now.

He must be a relative of yours.

I wouldn't be too worried about AVB. Last time he came back after a spell he crushed Geelong in a final.

He had played 3/4 games prior then vs Swans WCE and GWS and maybe Suns

Maybe Tomlinson to play forward. We have plenty of others to play through the middle.

For me, it is considered that:

Our concepts of talls only for the forward key positions is askew, at best. Some of the greats of the past from all teams did not use a giant standing like a flagpole in the deep forward area. Some absolute champion 'mediums' with regard to height evolved - and plied their craft using mobility and effort to go to get the ball. That these champs could kick as well, was handy and a reflection of their physical attributes and skills.

Just at the example level, I am thinking of Richmond's Riewoldt in the present day, but also of some of the following with many more examples in the annals of the history of our game: Robbo, Graham Osborne, Leigh Matthews, Warwick Capper, Jason Dunstall, Alan Jakovich, Matthew Lloyd, et al.

TMac does not appear to have the drive to mirror some of these forwards but does have the frame and skills to equal some of them. He needs to go back ... CHB or Fullback, bringing May down to CHB for his mobility and aggression if TMac is played at Fullback.

Jones out. 1 less player for the opposition who he kicks it to at every opportunity.

This decision fills me with some confidence in the FD. Sure the team has other issues but no one is gifted games. The skipper decision was another.

Harmes didn't make his name as a backman so must have a lock down role

This.

ie Neitz em'

When he was getting on, he'd still hit a pack hard and scare the living daylights out of the opposition. I can still hear the clunk of him shirt fronting a player in a contest, from behind the goals southern stand. @DemonOX absolutely agree. More physical imposition from TMac. Halve every contest. Set the tone for the others.

I've knocked McKernan before, but the bloke kicked 4 against us last year.  He might be lol against other sides, but he's Tony Lockett against us.

Possibly a Kent Kingsley Award nominee. Having said that, he does manages to scrape back onto the Essendon list every year on a one year deal or rookie contract.

I reckon Smith will play on Stringer when forward. I suspect he will play in the back 6 at least to start with (unless others know otherwise).

Agree.
Someone pointed out we have 2 second gamers in the side and 3 who haven’t played much footy in last couple of years.
I wonder if that is a concern.

Who is our best option for Tippa? He was one that got away from us in last year’s game playing a high half forward role. Would anyone entertain the thought of throwing Smith on him at some stage if Tippa is running us off our legs?

He's not your run of the mill small fwd, but a burst midfielder that has exquisite skills, can start middle or forward. Maybe Salem run with role in middle, Jetta in defense I think he can contain him in the contest, first go at  least. Was he on Phantasia last year? Who knows maybe Rivers is up for a defensive challenge?

Tbh I still have no clue where Smith fits in.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
