What’s the construction in pic 3?

Wait, so Joel Smith is now a defender and we won’t look to play him forward? Where does Goodwin think our goals are coming from? He has everyone playing back. Harmes, probably our most attacking mid is down there. Smith. Salem. Oscar. Is there any chance we could get some support for McDonald up forward. Or we gonna leave it to the undersized Fritsch? Maybe he will try Spargo at FF. It wouldn’t surprise me. Surely Weiderman or Jackson come in for Brown, who was deplorable against WCE.

I hope Petty go forwards.

I don’t get the fascination with him. I’ve seen glimpses, but also seen him waste shots on goal. Unreliable kick at goal for mine, and we have enough of those.

I’m the same with Joel Smith, seems like a one trick pony.

Maybe, but hasn’t really had a proper crack up forward. That one preseason game against Brisbane was the cause of hype around him as a forward. Then we alsomst destroyed his career.

From the club website on Petty.  Petty is expected to continue to train as a defender, but could be a valuable swingman for Melbourne in years to come.

So, add another one to the backs. We seriously mustn’t want to score. Petty kicked three in one game last year, his best return. No other matches with multiple goals from the ten he played. Not sold

All the talk I was told about by MFC people (non-current players mostly) was Jackson would come in, play forward, and was already rated higher than Weid in that regard. That was well before any word of him being drafted by us. Maybe that's the go? Certainly would give us some spark and unpredictability compared to TMac, Weid and Brown.

See I heard that Goodwin planned to play Jackson as a midfielder.

Absolutely could be. The forward stuff was from people not currently involved at the club, they were more talking about him as a player in general. He definitely is unique. Thoughts on Tomlinson potentially playing as a forward/ruck at times? (Obviously penciled in for mostly the wing, but not many players stay in the one spot for a whole game these days).

I wanna see Tom and Petty in the forward line Learning to Fly

I think free fallin would be more apt D_s

As long as they don’t drop the mark and it becomes feee balling.

Petty has been training up forward all summer.

If Harmes plays back again we are in serious sheeet.Harmes to lock down Cripps! Agree!

Petty is not a heartbreaker! but not really the answer! Joel Smith has been injury ravaged but is a much better natural footballer!

I can just see it now...I hope  Smith is not surplus to needs by end 2020 and another club picks him up and he turns into a very good player! I rate him highly! Very highly!

Forwards: TMAC, Weid, Jackson, Preuss, Petty, Brown, Max (rotation): Hannan, Jones,  ANB, Hunt, Bennell, Kosi, Bedford, Chandler, Dunkley, CWags, Fritsch, Petracca (rotation)

We are probably a crash and bash forward (like a Jonno Brown or dare I say it Hogan) short at this stage.  Otherwise, most of the goals have to come from this mob somewhere.

Yes buck somehow is more to the point

We cannot win games with this lots' current inaccuracy

I feel sorry for our forwards and Mids They are playing against a very poor, high risk  game plan that clearly doesn't work for long periods of the game

JC couldnt kick a score the way we have been playing and the way the Coach has decided to structure the plan

Petty could be the man to crash some packs - Hogan was not

To be fair though every team is probably a Jono Brown type short. The guy was one of the best key forwards over the past 50 years. He already made significant contributions in 3 flag winning teams by the time he was Weids age.

So can't the men also train there over the next few years.

As much as I would love a base around the MCG, if it isn't realistic then I'd rather have a state of the art base out at Casey. At least then we can train on a ground that is a similar size to the G.

I'm honestly thinking Goodwin's a seriously out of form coach at the moment, from a tactical point of view.

Let's turn our best goal kicking midfielder (aside from Petracca who's yet to prove himself as a mid) into a half back flanker and watch the likes of Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw kick their 6 goals a year.

Scrap-booking the backline!

OMac-gaps to be filled. Joel is a forward and has heaps of potential for this role. Just ask his Dad.

TMac is a better CHB than a forward - even though he often telegraphs his foot passing and defensive line of delivery on too many occasions. This can be fixed by improving team play and respective anticipation between receivers.

We have a tonne of capable young 'uns with height, mobility and good hands - who can also kick straight and have been improving in this regard - to fill the forward line - and to provide ground ball rebounds and screens for/to our potentially phantastique smaller fleet of forwards and recent goal-hungry recruits, and those who now are capable of providing improved team play after several years of 'experience' and 'opportunity'.

SG may well be overdue to have his head read or we face another stuff-up year - limited as it is going to be. At the end of the day: another senior coach, please.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
