If AFL does resume it will be a long season of practice games.  Under the circumstances I'll settle for that.  It will be good for the soul to have some 'normality' back.

You are basically remembered for your last effort.  The 2018 PF hovered like a stench over the 18/19 preseason; the 2019 season has been the veil of hopelessness since.  A good win against West Coast will probably erase that for the autumn and beyond.  MFC will treat this like a GF (but hopefully not a PF).  Put your stimulus cheque on the $3.50.

You speak of the end of the season like a distant event...I'm not sure you're right, but if the men get a season in then I can't see why 3 games (with minimal costs) will make any difference, financially. Many would challenge your assertion that AFLW costs money. It has led to a large up swell of grassroots players, strengthening footy all over Aus.

You have an interesting perspective re finances. the biggest drain on the AFL's coffers in 2020 will be paying players and staffers in the AFL whose clubs are not playing. If the AFL goes under financially it will be because of the highly professionalised environment of the men's game.

I think it's a little crude to criticise me for a lack of perspective. like me, you are on a football forum discussing the implications of a global pandemic on football. I'd say we are both a tad light on perspective.

Finally sexism does not cease to exist or become less problematic just because the AFL is in financial trouble.

Know some people will knock what i'm about to say, but one of the first things the AFL WOULD DO if it wanted to save money would be to abolish GWS and GC. It'll be a massive, but courageous, decision. GWS and GC are 30 year projects. The AFL will take well over a decade to get over this, probably 20 years. Sensible decisions need to be made now. The AFL subsidises those clubs completely. Massive money involved. They can hold a mini-draft and distribute the players evenly across the other clubs.

This is what happens when wages and persons employed by clubs increases out of belief with little in reserve for a rainy day. Well that rainy day that nobody ever predicted has arrived. Strong leadership is required and controversial decisions.

I'm more than happy for the MFC to take the money from my membership as a donation, but will the AFL be re-reimbursing members money for the exorbitant prices placed on their memberships?

No abuse there whatsoever sport.

The AFL relies on a certain number of games being played for the T.V money that comes with it. 

I get your feelings are hurt over the Women not getting their final, but how would the public respond to coming back for 3 finals and nothing else? The mens comp has only had a single round, so it will actually feel like finals once the remainder of the season is played, whereas the Womens comp will be like the start of a new season.

The entire code is in trouble here, and the obvious long term benefit of having a Womens comp does not help the AFL NOW. It in fact is an expense that they cannot afford.

While I am a fan of AFLW and our girls........ Priorities.

 

 

So in the (however unlikely) event that the season was called as finished as of tonight, does that mean it will definitely be a 9 way tie for the Brownlow Medal?

Sadly for us, St Kilda and North we'll be the ones on the chopping block. 

There was a hint in Gill's comments that all 18 clubs may not survive:  "Asked whether some clubs would battle to remain solvent, McLachlan said: “It’s a challenge but we will get there … we are working collectively to secure liquidity so we can protect the AFL and all our 18 clubs.” Season Postponed

I don't wish to be too pessimistic but we may not survive.  We are in a poor financial state and it will get worse with virtually no revenue after we give up pokies in June.  Not many wealthy benefactors to bail us out.  We are the only team without a base and without a heartland, as much as we fans like to think it is the MCG and surrounding areas, it just isn't. 

The other weaker clubs (Saints, Roos and Bulldogs) can mobilise their fans in their heartland to their suburban bases (when crowds can gather again) for fundraising, socialising etc etc.  Get fan momentum back.  Where does mfc go?  We are more vulnerable than any other Vic team.  And I don't think our proud history will protect us if crunch decisions need to be made.  Nor will our 'parent company' the MCC. 

As I noted a few days ago it is quite probable there will be mergers and relocations.  I just hope and pray we aren't one of them.  The AFL becomes 16 teams.  The AFL broadcast agreement expires at the end of 2022 but I would guess that it will soon be re-written to take account of no 2020 season.  Beyond that there will be variety of scenarios - fewer teams and games could well be in those scenarios.
