I’ve spent the last 40 years desperately hoping we might get that elusive premiership.

Every instinct in me as a sportsman and competitor wants Melbourne to win at all costs but as a supporter i’m worried we will win.

I don’t want our first premiership in nearly 70 years having an * next to it.

Do we even want to win it this year?

I reckon you can add an asterix or 2.

What I can't work out is there a lot of MFC supporters who would prefer we play ultra-attractive footy, than win a flag.  Moreover, if an ultra-defensive coach was on offer with a guaranteed premiership, there would be uproar.

If there’s one year I don’t want to win a flag it’s this year. Pure and simple.

It’s a personal dream and footballing supporting ambition of mine to see a premiership live at the MCG. Watching the Dees on TV winning a flag in front of an empty MCG or Optus Stadium would be good and satisfying,  but nowhere near the enjoyment, elation and sense of achievement of watching the mighty Dees win the big one at the G.

With that all being said, we’re nowhere near a flag with this current playing list, coach and game style.

I would say I want it less knowing it's close to certain that we won't be able to have crowd there to enjoy it. I'm a Liverpool fan and barring them deciding to void the season, which I don't see happening, we will be winning our first premiership in the "premiership era" in front of no fans and no parade to celebrate. It does leave a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth as I had even planned on being there for the celebrations.

My expectations must be way off the mainstream here.  Seeing the players take the field would be pretty exciting right now

We were close to winning a premiership prior to the 6-6-6 rule. That rule stopped the fast, attacking and ruggered game style that could afford kicks not being pin point as they do now because of opposition players being in the space where there used to be paddocks of space for Demons to kick goals. 6-6-6 was the single most detrimental thing to happen to Demons winning a flag and now fallen in the pack because players not skilled enough to cater for the rule change. The misery continues for now.

dont care what people say win at all costs a flag is a flag ,

what years when they didn't play finals ? or teams on drugs or over the salary cap.

Sorry mate but you’re absolutely delusional if you think that one rule change is the difference between us finishing 4th and 17th.

I want Nathan Jones to win it.

May as well cancel the 1900 flag that we won from 6th of 8 because the final series was NQR.

My favourite NQR Finals stat is Fitzroy simultaneously winning the wooden spoon and the flag in the same season.

Instead of taking the flag off them the league just deleted the entire club.

Do you want to win the premiership?

what a silly question.  This year and next year . Asterisk or not .
i want to walk around with a grin on my face because the Demons won the flag.

simple.

its taken  far too long!        I will be dead soon.  Some friends have kicked the bucket recently and have not seen a flag since1964. Bar a couple of attempts.

once you are over 65 a couple of decades and you can easily die.
sorry it’s cold and wet and MFCSS kicked in.  I will feel better after a good Shiraz

How about Essendon having equal most premierships but they sit 3rd on the Grand Finals won ladder. 1897 and 1924 they won the premiership after a round robin finals series with no Grand Final played.

Ross Lyon?

He is much more attacking these days!

Other than playing every team twice, playing each team once is the most balanced draw since the AFL commenced!

Also you could argue with all Teams having the 3-5 month break, the teams start from effectively the same position re preparation.

So do I want the flag, YESssssssssssssssss!

Of course I'd like to win it and I think we're well placed to do so at the moment.  Here we are in the first week of May and we've only lost one game and have had no new injuries for over a month now.

Which ever team wins it there will be no Astrix * next to the premiership, for every other team there will be a Astrix next to the premiership. Most can't make GF to watch live will still be watching from home.

Yes, sooner rather than later.

But I want to win a True Premiership Cup.   Not some tiddly-winks thing,  that will be treated as some sort of joke.

I might be desperate for a Cup,  but I'm not that cheap.

I'd take a flag but it would be bitterly disappointing if it were the only flag we win in our lifetime. Would be such a shame for the loyal MFC fans to not be there to celebrate.

Does anyone honestly think we're capable this year?

without injury and with a lot of luck we could win. Chances go up slightly if they annul the first round and we don't play Geelong at Geelong or North at Hobart etc. Not sure that our gameplan suits a three games in two weeks schedule. We will definitely need to win a few "ugly" as they used to say.

The truth is we have more chance of winning the rejigged season than as it was. Our first half draw was the draw from hell and by now the season could have been practically over and we would all be screaming for a new coach.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
