I asked this question in the pre-game thread

Can Bedford step up and show what hes capable of?

I asked it for a reason...  I believe the kid has star potential.  And he showed plenty today.

Whats going on with Fritsch. Named again but I take it he didn’t play?

Spargo, Lockhart, C.Wagner pressing their claims.  Our forward half pressure was fantastic to see.

Well that turned out to be a pleasant afternoon. Found a spot on the gasometer wing next to the Bradke clan. Whereas Maxy has recently shed 10kg Austin has gone the other way and put on 10 kegs. Now in the low 90’s. He loves being at the club and supported us growing up. Just like his dad. Five clubs were into him apparently but only had eyes for the red and blue.

He played and was solid.  Kicked one and missed a couple that he would normally kick.  Dropped a couple of speccies.  Happy with his game.

Played (and probably our best when he was on the field)

Oscar is a worry dropping chest marks

We really need May and Lever to play every game this year and maybe Petty next in line for a KPD, I was a Oscar fan but he needs to earn his spot by playing flawless defence 5, to 6 weeks in a row

He played, and played well at times. Copped a couple of big knocks, but came off unscathed. Think he was just getting his engine started, really. He’s gonna be great for us this year.

Welcome to D'Land. Nice contribution. Positive posts most welcome, however you will find in the minority.

I have not seen a frame but I am amazed and that does not happen often following the Dees. Really did not see us winning that game. Great effort.

Brown has to play Round 1.  I'm a big wrap for Jackson's future, but Brown does so much more at the moment (as he should) and will bring more to the table right now.  Weid as the back up ruck for Gawny with T Mac and Brown as the stay at home forwards.

As others have said, lots to like about today.  Our depth is looking better and some of the kids are showing that they can hold their own.

I thought Spargo gave us something good around the ground today, while I like the look of Rivers.  I think he is one for the future.  May not get a huge amount of games this year but definitely has a bright future.  Kozzie has to play Round 1.  His forward pressure is immense and he'll kick a few bags this season as he finds his feet.

Overall, great hitout and our solid form and build up to Round 1 continues.  That's a big win in my book.

Good preseason hit outs for us. 2 wins from 2 matches while getting game time into some kids and easing some returning players like Brayshaw, Tomlinson, Melksham back in.

Get Gawn and May up and firing and we've got a good team with some depth ready to go.

Do we ignore the Essendon scratch match because it doesn't suit the upbeat narrative?

North - in for a year if pain. The fact they couldnt beat a side with 8 VFL players is worrying. As i mentioned during the game, bottom 4 side. Reminds of Melbourne of 2012 when Neeld came on board.

Brayshaw- played the 2nd half and played really well after started a bit rusty. Play next week and get him cherry ripe for round 1.

Baker- Good in patches I thought. Showed some real run and carry and used the ball well. Will play senior footy this year.

Bradke- actually thought he battled well even though he was rag-doll. Something to work with there. His timing around the center was off times. The other kid who wore number 35 had a much better keep on him and was jumping all over Xerri.. Courtney??

Melksham- Was BOG in the first half.

Bedford- liked his game, his run down tackle on Daw and his goal was a highlight. Should have easily kicked 3. Works very hard.

Hunt- Will be lucky to play 10 games this year. Confidence looks shot and he'll either be traded or delisted.

Pickett- Lock him in for round 1. Should have easily kicked 3.

Brown- Lock him in for round 1. Should have easily kicked 4.

Rivers-  Besides his blunder he was the highlight for me. Has a huge booming kick and hit his targets well. Now I know why we didn't take Hayden Young because this kid will be just as good.

By the sounds of things, this was a worthwhile exercise.?

Absolutely.

Learned quite a bit about some of our kids today.

Bedford was very good. Has some skills.

Sparrow will be a senior player sooner rather than later.

Jordon went in hard. Didnt see heaps of him but liked what i did see.

Oscar Baker did enough to suggest he has a future.

Rivers.... what a leg he has. VERY excited about this lad.

Second half from Brayshaw was excellent after a slow start.

Bradke wasnt the baby giraffe i expected to see.

Brown will get lots of games this season.

A win always makes me happy, and probably a bit hyperbolic, but today was a very good day considering how many VFL players we used V's Norf.

They never looked a chance of beating us despite having every right to think they should.

I would light a cigarette right now if i smoked..

Yes, considering we only played 6 AFL listed players, some for a half only, and our real team played the following day. The fact they didn't blow us away when they fielded 19 AFL listed players was embarrassing for them.

If Rhys Shaw thinks he can win games playing that plan , he will be fast going the same way as his predecessor!

It was ordinary wasn’t it.

Dinky little kick rubbish.

Flew for one big pack mark in front of me in the first quarter, didn't quite grab it.

Had a good mark, play on, inside 50 in the second quarter that should've ended in a Kossie goal.

I liked his efforts, he should be there or thereabouts week one.

Also what happened to Hore wasn’t he meant to play today?

He did and was serviceable.

It is one win from one match.

Last week we fielded our seconds side against Essendon so it definitely doesn't count/

Then today we had, depending on who you rate, between 15-18 of our best 22 out and we played a North side that had about 8-10 players rested including their five best - Higgins, Ziebell, Cunnington, Goldy and Brown.

It was however a good sign as it was a game that the Roos would have been expected to win and it was at their training ground - usually a big advantage.

I went today and was pretty impressed with Bedford and Lockhart.

Tomlinson is a true wingman and holds position giving us an out ,or an in ,every time.

Mitch Brown saw a lot of it and will be a very handy pick up.

Melksham look back to his best and Kozzie will be our small forward this year as works very hard and has pace to burn.

Hunt no where near it at this stage.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
