It depends when they were built, building codes have changed,

How much earth would the horses require over the top of the tunnel, at least a metre I would think.

I fail to see the ablutions block in the sketches also.

Most importantly the discussions have not been in good faith, February 2026, and we still haven’t reached a starting point.

100%.

You can see it coming that the long term outcome will be Casey.

When we know that the players dislike going out there.

Would be interesting to know if they still hated it if they weren't split between AAMI and Casey. If everything was in one place, and there was a lifestyle sell to be made (living on the Mornington Peninsula as opposed to in the city), would that mitigate the issues? Possibly not. But it might for some.

I think the biggest issue from a facilities perspective is finding a way to kill the wind that plagues the footy oval

Except this isn't really a BIG build... the new school next door .... a much bigger project.

Maybe not big build but still enough to have snouts sniffing around the trough

Being broke never stopped them spending money before. That said a project in an affluent area like Caulfield wouldn’t be a priority

Agree, spending on a perceved conservative sliver tails football club probably doesnt give them 1 extra vote.

And the other thing, labours buddies love a big build. A $100 million project will line plenty of pockets.

It won fix the highway to Ballarat which is in terrible condition.

The other upside is that it would put Hawthorn out...They are looking at that whole growth area that we've been trying to build.

If we pull out it gives the peninsula, Gippsland etc...

And coaches 😀

There is a tunnel used by cars at the end of Glen Eira Road to get to the car park, so the players could drive there or be bused there, no tunnel needed.

I don’t see players and coaches complaining about being in Geelong.

Our strategy should be to sell our position of being close to Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula.

I noticed in an article on Casey Demons that we are recruiting a lot of young players from the surroundings areas. Could be an indication of things to come.

🤮lets hope not

Lets just hypothesise that this is still all a possibility. A 'hurdle' seems to be the dreaded tunnel. Apparently all the OTHERS weren't but this one is ?

Is there a need ? I would say yes. If we're to be located in that bottom left corner as it were with playing fields northerly to any other infrastructure then direct , proprietary even, access would imho be desired. This provides quick easy direct access for the club to the training ovals. Tbh the idea of ferrying around players , or they're driving themselves to the inside is a nonsense in the modern day. They come, eat perhaps, change, train inside maybe, team meetings, presentations etc... and out to the grounds...

You're NOT mucking around going walkies half a mile up the road. That's not happening.

So a tunnel is desirous. Like the trivago bloke, do I really need to say it again... this is EASY. It's just civil construction. You have a plan, you have a schedule... you get to it.

The only equipment needed inside the rails as it were are any plant required for terraforming. If were me... id take off the running surface at an appropriate location... store maintain the grass sods ( same as would for the cut / cover tunnel. You lay a heavy wood 'bog mats' over earth substrate. If its an extended time... replace grass whilst plant working... then repeat process to evacuate equipment when finished.

As far as the training facility infrastructure goes this would be likely the most 'painful' thing to manage but of itself very straight forward.

It's a problem, it's solvable.

The rest is just putting up a factory/warehouse type construct with admin area and fit outs. Absolutely nothing new or prohibitive.

None of this is hard. Some care to the track requires but again.... there are workarounds.

Indeed if you were a bit clever clogs 😉 I'd introduce plant to the inside having dug the trench and ramps for the tunnel.

When needing to bring equipment out then refer back to the bog-mat process.

If super clever you might not need to truck out much if any spoil just relocate it.. I.e use it as part of 'landscaping '. Any other soils sands required for ovals could be brought in whilst trench open and stockpiled.

This is eminently very doable.... just that other little hurdle.... someone saying we can.

Kot for me, Goschs is not so far away, get the train to Richmond then a short walk. Remember why Waverley failed. It's car only.

Yeah, silly of me to forget… I’m still stuck waiting to get out after the Melb v Dawks game in 1999…..

If anyone believes all this Pro-MRC nonsense about tunnels closing the track for a year then I have a footbridge I can sell them. It's even demountable and transportable like those we see at the F1 every year.

I can also offer other bridges for sale that are smaller simpler lightweight models on wheels that are very similar to the starting traps that the horses use for racing.

Spot on. I drove down Kingsway near Albert Park lake on the weekend and saw a partially errected footbridge. That will be just for the F1 GP and then dismanted.

They don’t hate the split they hate CASEY for the geography & travel time

Why can't we just ride horses over the track instead of building a tunnel

Brilliant!!

We could have a whole stable available for use by the players. There are even existing stables there. And I’m sure @Redleg would be happy to provide some of his steeds when not racing?

Sorry, is the travel time not a result of the split?

My preference for a permanent home for MFC is Caulfield. Having said that, I feel that the development of Casey Fields is being undervalued. Travel time is used as a reason for ditching our arrangement with Casey, as if our entire playing list live near the MCG! Here is a list of some other options when it comes to travel times...

Mt Eliza to Casey Fields: 30 minutes

Western Port Bay (Tooradin): 15 minutes

Mt Martha to Casey Fields: 40 minutes

... Even Portsea is within 65 minutes!

It's awkward for players to get from Casey to Revolver to Casey

If only The Tunnel was still operating.

The sooking over the location of Casey has been one of the most telling things about the culture of this footy club than anything that's happened over the last however long.

It's so precious and short sighted. Dingley is not exactly in the heart of Melbourne. If you're leaving at 7:30am getting to Hawthorn's new facility from Brighton it'll take you half an hour; from Hawthorn will take over 35 minutes; and if you're a little hipster player living in Fitzroy it'll be a 50-odd minute drive to get there.

If you're an Essendon player training at the Hangar and living in Fitzroy it'll take you over half an hour at 7:30am; 35+ minutes from Hawthorn, over 45 from Brighton.

Moggs Creek is about an hour from GMHBA and I've never once heard Patrick Dangerfield complain, nor anyone suggest that Geelong's location is anything other than a huge asset and benefit.

Casey should've been bought into years ago, developed into a world class facility (likely with the backing of the state and federal governments), and become the envy of the league.

NFL and EPL clubs don't train anywhere near their home stadiums, Brisbane's new facility in Springfield is miles from the inner city suburbs like New Farm that players would be living. That we allow this absurd narrative of players not liking driving to training is one of the most embarrassing things about this club.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
