Wherever he ends up, considering his history, is there any option for the club to make a request to the AFL to allow him to train with the club throughout the whole preseason, i.e. prior to the December 3 stipulated date?

Reported on SEN he is on his way back to Perth and we might know within the hour what’s happening

I’m wondering why Bennell to us is being reported as a “sure thing” when he’s due to have a medical at the saints today.

Must’ve been a really good feed last night?

Apparently he had the Lemon Chicken

Langdon, Tomlinson, pick 3, pick 8 and a fit Bennell for nix.

If you’re not happy with that trade period you are just plain miserable

Harley Bennell has toured the Demons, a lengthy visit this morning, as other clubs weigh up their options. I’ll have the latest and the pics

@7NewsMelbourne

i cant help but get excited thinking how much a fit Bennell would go nuts in our forward line. Just to see a couple of those flick ups to team mates by foot would make my day.

On the other hand I will be ready to hit the Ignore button for a couple of weeks when, if we dont get him, the "Typical Melbourne" Deelander whiners start their "We'll all be runed Said Hanrahan" jive.

If there are four clubs vying for his services and he has passed medicals at each of those clubs then that is a fairly reasonable endorsement of his physical and mental state.

Could be a great story for both club and individual.

He would immediately be the most talented player on the list.

Will be ropeable if that happens and Martin winds up at Carlton too.

Would basically mean we’ve failed to attract Elliott, Martin and Bennell in one period. Worse yet losing out to lowly clubs like Blues and Saints would be very embarrassing after expressing public interest.

Cmon Dees get it done!

MFCSS raising its head at last.

I reckon a lot of Demonlanders have collectively gone mad & lost their objectivity and logical reasoning in their desperate quest for success.

What happened to the NO Dickhe@ds policy.

Have people forgotten the troubles & dramas this bloke has caused at 2 Clubs !! with regard to drugs and poor discipline.

And this is before you even begin to look at his injury problems

and how many flags can we attribute to this policy?

His calves worry me more than the off field stuff.. he seems to have settled down.

Either way it doesnt matter.

Its very low risk for the highest reward you can imagine.

Believe Melbourne a long way ahead in Bennell chase. Looking every bit a man who wants to be there, and saying the same. Very positive visit to Dees HQ. Dees have nothing to lose ...

@7NewsMelbourne

If we had to give up a pick for him, I would be saying no. But we don't. In fact, we may end up rookying him...

He'll come on the cheap in terms of dollars. We're not offering him $600,000 a season...

If he ends up continuing to show those off field issues, or his calves go ping again, then we haven't lost a thing.  He'll get the flick and we've lost nothing.

However, if he settles and his body holds up then we've almost got the steal of the entire trade period.

In 2019 we carried Vandenberg and Joel Smith, no games between them. Bennell has played maybe 2 in the last 5 years. Add Kolojashni  and that would make 4 potential crocks on top of the 'normal' bout of injuries sustained during a season.

If this is what will keep you up at night, then I'd suggest we should delist AVB, Smith and KK and replace them all with Bennell.

The bloke is a freak.  If we can't afford to take the risk with him because we have enough others on the LTI, then quite simply, [censored] the other blokes off to make more room.

I’m sick of loosing so if that means having a team full of [censored] then so be it, we have absolutely nothing to lose getting Bennell

Exactly.

Short contract and low wage.

If he stuffs up- we pay him out and show him the door.

However, hopefully he’s gained some perspective on life and his career and his family has given him the motivation to succeed at the top level.

Im getting excited.

On that basis the Gabba in Brisbane should probably be the true “G”.

Not really, "Gabba" is already the shortened form

he said last night on the 7 news interview that he couldn't think of anything better than playing on "... the G..."

Its us I reckon.

Somebody needs to remind him playing for the Aints means lots of miles on the surface at Marvel. That wouldn't be great for his legs.

Reading back over the early part of this thread, Ethan, you must be melting down at your trade desk, mate. How ya feeling?

Given where my trade desk is set up, relieved actually.

I'd be happy to just use him as the small forward/X-factor option in the F50 rather than expect him to pump out 14kms of gut running in the midfield, worth a shot, will cost us SFA really.

A bit of time there wouldn't hurt but don't mind the idea SF

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
