WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BENNELL

We need to offer something to get the guy to the club.  If Geelong are offering one year, we offer two.  If they are offering two, we offer two + one with a trigger.  There are at least four clubs looking at him and we're probably the least successful of the lot.  We're not going to get him for a one year deal.

Beyond that simple fact, one spot on our list simply isn't that big a deal.  We just re-signed both Wagners, Dunkley, Baker, Chandler and Lockhart.  Is Bennell a worse option to have on our list that any of them?  I readily admit that he's a risk and might never even play a senior game for us, but he's certainly not any weaker than the fringe players we have already given contracts to.

Are there? I have only read about Sydney and Geelong. Who are the other teams?

I can't find the article I read.  It was only a few hours ago.  Annoying.

Just confirmed via SEN:

We need to ensure the guy can still run and is a good chance to be able to actually play again before blindly offering him a contract, just because other clubs are. I'm glad we're reported to be putting him through a medical, but he still hasn't started running yet. It'd be stupidity of the highest order to offer him a 2 year contract (or more as you suggested) then for him to break down within a few weeks of returning to running. He'd need to be able to show he can return to top speed, use some agility and be able to jump before we should consider a contract, we've got right up to when the season starts to do that, make him work for it first.

To answer your question is he a worse option that Wagner(s), Dunkley, Baker etc, well clearly over the last 4 season that answer is YES. From last season, May, Lever, Jetta and Hannan all played less than 10 games due to injury while AVB, KK and JSmith played 0, bringing in another player with a significantly worse injury history than any of them is not smart, yes it's only 1 list spot but coming off a massively injury effected season means we should be extra cautious, and I'd want to see he's got some capability to get back to footy, not just offer him a contract because everyone else is!

Hmmm. Why not? If his brain and body is right then we have a cheap gun. If not we rolled the dice and didn't use pick 97 on some kid that probably won't play a game.

Technical question for anyone that happens to know, but I seem to remember Burgess was listed as starting in November. I know he's already done some things like giving out programs for the players on break, but is he on hand to oversee the Bennell physical?

He'll be on small coin.  Low risk high potential reward if he can stay on the park Kent.  We need speed and class

Out of the interested clubs are we the first to put him through a medical?

Don’t mind this move personally, loads of talent and if he has some luck over the next year or two with his body we could benefit greatly. Even if he only shows 75% of his potential.

Risk worth taking and if it doesn’t work out so be it.

I think Edmund said Geelong gave him a medical.

We simply do not need another player with a history of chronic injury. A waste of time and resources trying to get another player fit to play with the high risk that he will breakdown again.

Chronic hamstring injury is something that never goes away. Footy is stop start and requires sudden acceleration like a sprinter coming out of the blocks time and time again.

A no for me.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
