Troy Broadbridge

Troy Broadbridge, who played 40 games for the Demons passed away on this day 15 years ago.

Troy married Trisha Silvers on 18 December 2004. Eight days later, while spending their honeymoon in the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand, he drowned after being swept out to sea by the tsunami that followed the Indian Ocean earthquake. Trisha survived.

The red headed defender was a terrific team manager. He will always be remembered.

RIP Troy.

It must have been incredible luck for Trisha to have survived. I think of her also and hope she has been able to fully recover.

RIP Broady

Everything was going great for him too. He was starting to come in to his own as a footballer, cementing his spot in a finals team, and had just got married.

Sill cant believe it happened .

I think his loss to the club is hugely underestimated.
Daniher was always looking for a CHB after this tragedy and could never find one.

I'll never forget reading the scrolling headline during the coverage for the first time that Troy Broadbridge was one of the many missing people. I hoped so much to hear the news that he'd been found alive. I've never been prouder of the club than I was after the tribute game to him vs Essendon.

RIP Troy

Troy like Buddy Holly and Otis Redding, Careers just starting to really flourish, all cut down young.

We will never know....

Must have been a matter of inches between life and death.

Anyone recall if he and Trisha were with each other when he disappeared?

Yes they were together when he was swept away.

If I recall correctly, Troy pushed Trisha to safety before subsequently being swept away. Last act on earth was to save the life of another, at the expense of his own. Hero.

R.I.P Broady, and thoughts with the Broadbridge family.

Was developing into a quite good half back. Very courageous and determined.

@ding and I have paid our respects at his resting place on Ko Phi Phi Don. Do you still have the pics Dingus?

Fondly remembered and sadly missed.

Broady was a much loved team mate and his name is perpetuated through the annual awarding of the Troy Broadbridge Memorial Trophy to the best and fairest player in our VFL team.  Made my heart swell with pride when Dees players of the day helped rebuild a school on Phi Phi Island that had been washed away in the tsunami.  What a great Club!  RIP Broady.

Always missed, but never forgton.

As a young footballer, his improvement was very noticeable. He became a team driver and team target from one season to the next. His passing was such a tragedy for all. Betcha' he is still cheering for the Dees...

Always hard to comprehend such fateful events.

Remember the location and exact moment that I learnt that he was missing.

Having lunch with friends overlooking Lorne. Also Dees fans.

We sat in silence, completely stunned.

Tragic.

A tragic happening but that game at the G against Essendon the following season was a great tribute to him with the Everly Bros song as the players ran out with his wife standing on the side. Plus we won for him.
