Took the kids to family day today just outside the G and chatted to a few of the injured boys. Jones has been cleared of a potential break to his leg. Was wearing a compression bandage. Hopefully the swelling doesn't go down to his ankles and cause issues. May said he would be available for the next match but mentioned something about getting stitches out so l have some concerns still. Joel Smith seems more likely to return for the first few rounds which logically means he will come through the vfl first. Fritsch had a decent bandage on this knee. l'm guessing he will be out for a while also. AVB had a bandage on this left calf area. Hopefully a healing graze/cut and not a calf muscle tear. Jetta didn't have any bandages on his legs and seems ok

AVB said he felt as god as he has in 3 years after yesterday. So no concerns there.

Bailey has an infection around his knee which is not serious. Petty has groin issues but not osteo related.

Does anyone know exactly what Smith has done to his foot?

@Satyriconhome do you know what’s wrong with Smith and how long away he is?

Throughout Preseason he was reported to be super fit. The most recent training report had him participating but kicking his on his non-preferred.

I think he could add speed and athleticism to the backline and support May and Lever.

Not sure, in rehab, apart from kicking on his non preferred, he seems ready to go

They have had a few when ramping up their rehab get a bit sore around the groin, Baker and Petty are two that come to mind

Asked Smith a couple of weeks ago said his foot was fine

Is the club not publishing a list with details?

would love to know more about Koladjashnij. If the poor bloke is not recovered after a complete summer break then regrettably a decision may have to be made. Very sorry about this as he can really play.. Not certain when we can add to a list but I was impressed by the bloke from Casey who filled in in the ruck last Friday when Bradtke was off the ground. I wouldn't mind him ( whatever his name is) as a backup ruckman. Bradke looks to be a couple of years away

Harley Bennell  Calf  TBC
 Kade Chandler  Wrist  1-2 weeks
 Kyle Dunkley  Foot  Test
 Max Gawn  Knee  Test
 Mitch Hannan  Groin  TBC
 Kade Kolodjashnij  Concussion  TBC
 Steven May  Knee  Test
 Nathan Jones  Corked shin  Available
 Harry Petty  Groin  TBC
 Braydon Preuss  Knee  5-7 weeks

Early prognosis

The Demons have a few that are a while away with Bennell and Preuss working their way back from lengthy complaints, although the former has stepped up training in an encouraging sign he might finally be putting his calf issues behind him. Gawn and May are expected to play this week against Hawthorn while mystery surrounds Joel Smith's fitness, given his absence from the first two pre-season hitouts. – Jennifer Phelan

As an aside, while this shows injury list as being in the 'matches' tab on the AFL website I couldn't find the lists that way.  This new site leaves a lot to be desired - so much good info has simply disappeared or impossible to find from the menu.

Couldn't agree more, dd36.  I emailed the AFL about my dissatisfaction with their shoddy product and unsurprisingly they haven't even had the decency to reply.

However, if every poster on this site were to do the same thing, maybe they might take notice.

The only thing we have is that he cut his foot (at the beach?) and it became infected. Whether there's something else/more since, hard to know.

Not having much luck.

Doubt Joel Smith will be available any earlier than round 2 going by a short convo I had with him at family day. Not sure what the issue is though

Do we know how Hannan is tracking? Would be handy for R1

Bennell and potentially Petty seem to be the only best 22 players unavailable

Having virtually no best 22 players unavailable for round 1 and 90% of the top tier getting a good preseason is a great result.

No excuses Demons!!  If Clarry played like he did last year off no preseason, I cannot wait for the season to begin!

*I am not including Bennell as he has so long to go to be considered for a game.

Correct but Petty is VFL when he returns.

Pruess also Casey only Seniors if Gawn injured.

The fact that our injury list seems to be shrinking probably means that it’s less likely that we will find it necessary to fill the vacancy caused by Nietzche’s long term injury.

Was told yesterday that when Mitch Brown was with Essendon, his shoulders and hips were shot, that's probably why he was delisted. He was training once a fortnight with them, since he's been with us he hasn't missed a training session.

Amazing what a different outlook can do to a player.

Kk should be listed as long term/indefinite.  He won’t play this year.

Bennell will be managed through 2020. I think earliest is mid year for a return to full match fitness.

Nietschke knee is out for the year.

Preuss won’t be back until round 5-6.

Joel Smith hasn’t played so will be managed and expect he may be a round 3-4 return. Super talented so fingers crossed

Gawn. Round 1 probably- relief.

Others are all likely to be available for round 1.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
