There is going to be some assumptions made here on my part, which would be no different to most on here, but this is how I see it:

The bottom four are our only long term injuries at this stage.  All four are not best 22.

The players above are shorter term injuries, many of whom have done the bulk of pre-season and therefore have a good fitness base under them.  Some, like Brayshaw, are still able to do some running and many of the others don't seem that far away from returning.  It sounds like players like Gus, Gawn and T Mac aren't actually that far away, and neither is someone like Joel Smith.

Steven May might take time, which is a shame, but he is the only best 22 concern.  I'd put AVB in there as a best 22 player, but how many of us really expected him to be ready to play?  That leaves others like Chandler and Dunkley who are nothing more than depth at present.

To me, the injury list looks long, but is not really that bad.  We might be short a few through this weekend, but I'd expect most to return for at least one hit out before the real stuff begins.

Gary Pert more or less suggested that May misses round 1, but they're hopeful he'll return in the early part of the season.

Hopefully we can get 18 consecutive games out of him this year, otherwise this trade is looking disastrous.

If only we had kept Hogan!

Melbourne CEO Gary Pert has assured Demons fans that Max Gawn will be ripe to play in Round 1.

Pert also gave updates on a raft of other injured Demons including Steven May, Jake Kolodjashnij, Aaron vandenBerg and supplementary selection period signing Harley Bennell.

“I can tell you that not all those players are going to miss the first game,” he added.

“In this period of time, as we intensify the training, we’ve got some players like a Kolodjashnij and a vandenBerg who basically didn’t play last year, (but) they’re preparing.

“VandenBerg, for example, it’s a very slow burn. We want to get him right for the early part of the season, we don’t want to push his program, but we’re really happy (with) where he’s at.

“Harley Bennell, we took him on board and he’s going to be a risk. If we get half a dozen games out of him, it’ll be fantastic.

“May had a bit of a hiccup. Not a major injury but it will take a little bit of time. He’ll be ready for the first game or shortly into the season.”

I'd rather hear from Burgess about May's progress, but it doesn't sound all that bad.  It smacks of someone guessing more than anything.

The injury issues we have are all down to one thing and one thing only - training.

Blind Freddy can see what the problem is here - if they didn't train they wouldn't get injured, so stop all the training sessions.

With a bit of a segway over to the Burgess' Management Plan for Preseason Games thread and as indicated by @Kent and @spirit of norm smith, my take on the injury list and those missing full training is that having put in a solid block of preseason training before Christmas, we are now in a conservative injury management mode to make sure that we have as near to a full list as possible for the start of the season and aren't playing catch-up all year getting back a critical mass of top line players or carrying as many injuries for those that play week to week throughout the season.  At least that's what I'm hoping.

It sounds like the club have been feeding us BS on the May injury...

From a cyst, a week off training, to a minor complication, a week off training.

Now might not play first game or more.

That tells me that 2nd week is more like 4 to 6.

You might be right rjay.  But that's life.  I don't expect the club to always tell the 'whole' truth.

Maybe they believed it wasn't too bad and it's taking a little longer?  That happens from time to time.

Either way, May has done the bulk of the pre-season and should therefore be in pretty good nick regardless.  Here's hoping he can be right for Round 1.

So much for going deep into September being an issue.

Some teams just have all the luck. Or bad luck in our case.

Because MFCSS.

I honestly sometimes wonder whether our run of good luck will ever come. Maybe tigers fans were thinking the same thing only 4-5 years ago, but I’m so sick of seeing teams getting to have their best team available while we have to dig deep into the shallow barrel.

May, I am reliably informed, will play in Marsh game 2. This is from a source that is closer to match day activities than CEO Pert. Take it FWIW, but that is the info I received from the mouth of a MFC person.

I received that info last weekend. So, unless something changed between now and then, i'll assume he will play down in Tassie.

I think we would call this a nil all draw so far.

Melbourne and Freo are the only 2 teams that could possibly manage to get bent over by Gold Coast in a trade! (haven't given up on May FWIW).

Very promising, and terrific news if your source is on the money. Though I’ll be happier if they just hold him off till the actual footy starts.

I'll be happy if he plays a preseason game footy - he will need a hit out and he is critical part of our back 6 (the most most critical?) so needs some match team with Omac and co to build synergy and 'connection'.

I'll be very unhappy if in that game he shirt fronts a roos players and gets suspended

That suspension he got last year was an absolute joke.  It was worth a small fine, at best.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
