2019 Player Reviews: #21 Braydon Preuss

When he was traded into the club 12 months ago, he was expected to add versatility to the list but his appearances were rare and, apart from the day when he beat Matthew Kruezer (in Max Gawn’s absence), he hasn’t exactly set the world in fire.

Tempting to say that he suffers from MFCFS (MFC Fringe Syndrome) in that he is too good for VFL but can't make it at AFL level but it's not that simple.

Preuss is an old style ruckman in a world that doesn't value that style of play. Not sure that it will change.

Pruess is very effective in getting first hand to the ball in ruck contests. He also follows up, and second efforts are promising. Yes, he looks a little cumbersome at times... a little unsure... I think this is because he came to our game later than most. For this reason I see upside as he works with coaches (and Max) at the elite level. He kicks like a mule and is good for a goal or two when bursting out of secondary stoppages forward of the centre. He is also on the aggressive side with physicality in the clashes. I expect he will improve as time goes on.

If he wants to play in the same side as Max he had better get a tank and be consistent taking marks In the forward line. He needs to make defenders fear his abilities in the air otherwise they will just continually run off him.

If he can do these two things he will be more than useful.
Unfortunately being humongous Isn’t enough on its own

Still agree with this summation ... I'd reckon he is more than handy if he makes progress on last year. Hard work and close work will bring this improvement.

Couldnt catch a balloon if he tried unfortunatel. Is a decent kick for goal but rarely gets that opportunity. See it very hard for him to squeeze into the team with Tomlinson/Weideman doing the chop-out ruck work.

Certainly a work in progress, and I wouldn't write him off just yet, as many have.

IF he can improve his tank over the off season, he may well find more confidence in contested marking and chasing down defenders who, if caught by him, would be in mortal fear.

Ruck coaching and Max mentoring could also help his ruck craft.

Over to you, Braydon - get super fit and give yourself  a chance to prove the critics wrong.

Exactly what I was going to write - Jake Spencer's slightly more solid and slightly less athletic brother from another mother.

Even experienced ruckmen go for fourth round future picks in the trade period - we gave up a best 22 midfielder for ours.

Preussey is the back up we needed and could develop into a real weapon for us....?

give him more time and play him forward at Casey, as well as ruck. He needs to improve his marking if he can do that he will be a major asset. we all know the headache cox for collingwood causes for us, i would like to see Preuss do something similar but more consistently.

With a bit more in the tank and another preseason with max I think Preuss could surprise a few people. Just having him on the team makes me feel better, if we were to lose gawn for any decent length and we didn't have him, we would be in big trouble. I'm hoping he can improve his leading patterns and forward craft. He is huge and can kick straight.

I think he'll come good as a forward ruck. He can mark the ball, he took 9 marks in a 2017 game against GWS, 4 contested. He was down on confidence this year, and perhaps too heavy. If he trims down he'll be dangerous.

There were 2 very simple marks (amongst others) he spilled this year that probably led to the lack of confidence and being dropped from the team. Big preseason and Preussy's set up for a big 2020.

If he can improve his stamina and marking then he will make it.

Needs to play primarily as a forward in the VFL. If can't make it there then he's not going to make it anywhere and we can comfortably either chuck him or accept that he'll only ever play if Max is out.

Think we need to have Preuss adapt to the MFC style rather than accept him as a second string ruckman. 2020 should be the year the Club coaches do this

With Gawn needing a break soon, is Preuss ready for a game soon ?  We brought him for this and need to see how he goes. Not sure if he’s match fit given no VFL this year.

If I was his manager, I’d be on the phone to Giants, Swans and even the Lions about a possible early exit from the Dees contract. Goodwin has shown he’s not interested in Preuss which is very disappointing and the big man should look elsewhere.  Dees could put a request to trade Preuss to Giants in exchange for Adam Kennedy or Bobby Hill.

he's a break glass in case of emergency player*

*unless you don't take him to adelaide

needs to get a trade to another club to try to pursue his afl dream; we won't get much for him (we didn't give up much in the first place)

He beat Kreuzer hands down when we played our last game without Max so it’s puzzling why he wasn’t given the opportunity to take on Goldstein.

A bit of a mystery given that Goldstein has been good so far this year.
