Hereโ€™s the breakdown:

A: Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver

B+: Jack Viney, Tom McDonald

B: Nil

B-: Nathan Jones, Christian Salem, Angus Brayshaw, Michael Hibberd, Kade Kolodjashnij, Jake Melksham, Bayley Fritsch, Steven May

C+: Christian Petracca, Jake Lever, Sam Frost, Aaron Vandenberg, Jayden Hunt, Alex Neale-Bullen, Marty Hore, Josh Wagner, Neville Jetta

C : James Harmes, Billy Stretch, Mitch Hannan, Oscar McDonald, Joel Smith, Corey Wagner

C-: Jay Kennedy-Harris, Braydon Preuss

Developing*: Sam Weideman

Developing: Charlie Spargo, Oskar Baker, Harrison Petty, James Jordan, Tom Sparrow, Toby Bedford, Aaron Nietschke, Austin Bradtke, Kade Chandler

For a team that has had so many top draft picks, for the players not to have elevated themselves and/or received the right development to become very good AFL players or stars of the competition by now is alarming.

ย

So Bucky's been on Demonland pretty extensively then!

A few of the player ratings are a bit off IMO, but apart from that he's spot on and tbh I hope we cop more media flack this offseason.

Must have been, which is why this is my front runner for the laziest piece of AFL journalism of the trade season. Go home Bucky you're drunk

I'd like to see where everyone rates that list compared to Bucky.

For me;

ย

T-Mac & Viney down to B-

KK down to C

May up to B

Tracc up to B-

ย

Rest I am relatively comfortable with.

harmes = stretch = C (6th tier)?

besides slightly under rating Petracca, Lever and Jetta, as in my opinion their ball use elevates them about those he has them alongside, i'd say he has graded most of the players about right on their careers so far. everyone needs to step up a grade or two, and for more than just 1 year, if they want to be taken seriously.

ย

@daisycutterThat is probably a bit rough, I agree. He is a brilliant clubmen and the effort is always there.

How much time would the opposition put into worrying about Harmes each week?

Edit: I should add that we are comparing against the rest of the AFL here

Edited by BW511

I posted on one of the FB pages re this, and while I agree with his summary based on last season, he said similar things regarding the Richmond season in 2016 and also said they can't win a premiership with that list.

I'm fairly sure this time last year Buckenara was praising our list.... it's very easy to just write things based on one season.

Agree. His assessment of our list is not a million miles away. I'd haveย Hibberd at C+ and Harmes and Trac at B-

But surely we expect both Lever and may to elevate to A graders - and Trac for that matter.ย

He is just repeating what everyone else has been saying about Melbourne.

That's his major blunder along with KKย .ย  Harmes is at leastย a C+ / B-

KK hasn't fired a shot ....yet.ย  Not sure how he has even assessed him.ย  May also.ย  Off 8 games or so?ย  Obviously a bit of dart throwing journalisticย license in some of those.

In my world Harmes is higher than a Cย sheesh,ย have a look at a couple of the names on the C list. His finals campaign was brilliant in 2018 and probably our best in the prelim. If thatโ€™s not elevating your game I donโ€™t know what is.ย One of our consistent performers this year also.

Others need to pull the finger out.

I really like Harmes, don't get me wrong.

Just think our starting 4 midfielders vs West Coast 2020 highlights how far off we are. Max and Clayton break even, then we get smoked

We will be judged all through the 2020 season and it is up to the players to silence the critics. It is not just the media it is also us supportersย  who support them.ย  We are the critics as well.

Less injuries and good recruiting can help.

By no means was my post intended for you BW, apologies if it read that way, just think Buckenaraโ€™s grading isnโ€™t a true reflection of Harmes.

Yeah Viney isnt a B+,his skill level is average & not a great decision maker.

KK & Fritsch are C at best.

Oscar can go below a C for mine

Agree binman however what we might have expectedย from Lever and May has not happened.

Both IMO are injury prone, if we get 18 - 20 games out of both of them in 2020 I will be astounded. ย  So far both are overpaid average contributors.

The Demon stalwart surpassed the number of his father's appearances for the club towards the end of the season. As he approaches his thirties, his pace is inevitably slowing, and he is likely to explore alternative opportunities beyond the team's midfield.

โ€œDiscoโ€ took his time (four seasons) but the mid-season draftee has been a shining light of Melbourne's campaign, improving to become a versatile option at either end of the ground. He has great marking skills which allows him to play as a marking target up forward or an intercepting defender down back.ย

The skipper delivered another outstanding season, leading the team from the front, participating in every game, and earning club champion honours, while also securing an equal record eighth All-Australian blazer as a ruckman.ย  Max Gawn is arguably the greatest exponent of ruck skills in the history of the game; an exceptional leader who has guided the club to a premiership, through the challenging times that followed, and now into the next phase of its storied history.

It was a frustrating season for the former number 13 draft selection, who failed to build momentum in his second campaign; Tholstrup played only nine games, having been omitted twice and substituted out three times. However, he demonstrated promising signs in the midfield at Casey towards the end of the season, and big things are anticipated from him in the coming years.

He is presently contracted to the club for an additional five years, with a substantial annual salary of approximately $1.7 million in the final seasons of his agreement. All at Melbourne are eagerly anticipating his resurgence to his previous peak performance levels.
