Not the best not anywhere near what we need

Ā

3 different phantom drafts out today all have us taking Pickett. It’s not the way I hope we go but it’s starting to look very likely. I had hoped if we were going to take Pickett then we would split again and take him with a lower pick but when you look at the quality of players getting to picks 15/16 am not sure it would make sense for cats, port or suns to split with us.Ā

Also if it pans out the way the phantoms predict it will then lots of teams will do far better than us out of this draft. Of course we won’t know who the real winners are for a few years but I’m still hoping come Friday morning there’s a bit more to get excited about.Ā

I don’t see the appeal of Pickett or Weightman at 10. Hell, I’m not convinced on Jackson at 3, but we have a tendency to try and draft by position instead of best talent.

Seems highly unlikely that Sydney wouldn't bid for Green, knowing that GWS would take him regardless.Ā

Surely Robertson and Kemp won't slide that far.

Still hoping we take Kemp.

Ā

I still think we're in for a few surprises.

There is every chance someone like Serong makes it through to us, and then we have a choice to make, one in which I'd be inclined to believe is to take Serong.Ā  Then we could potentially looked to 'trade up', using pick 28, to land Pickett who also has the potential to slide a bit.

While I get the feeling we're pretty much locked into Jackson at 3, I think there are still a variety of options that could play out at 10.

Kemp has all the pitfalls of a tweener (up and down impact, inconsistency), the ACL tear and some suspect kicking as well. I don't think he was ever as highly rated by clubs as he has been on here.

Dev Robertson is a good player and I'd still be surprised that Freo don't lock him in as a high character and no fuss selection given their current midfield is Fyfe and not much more in terms of locked in pieces. He'd be a bit of a culture changer there. But it's hard to watch Melbourne and think what we really need is an inside mid with a suspect kicking action.

It's Stephens, Serong, Young (all gone) and maybe Bergman who I'd be more surprised we aren't or wouldn't be picking.

If 2 of the better drafting sides in recent history in the Bulldogs and the Hawks are after Pickett then we aren't exactly in poor company.

The only thing we have to trade up with is a futureĀ 4th round pick.Ā

And my guess is the best we could do by offering pick 28 and a future 4th round pick is pick 26, maybe pick 25 if we get very lucky.

Agree, we have nothing to trade up with outside of trading down from 10

I can't say i'm overly thrilled with the prospect either LT.Ā  I'm still not convinced in the benefit of trading away pick 8 either.

It’s 48 hours of predictions. Ā Only JT and Goody know the algorithm of how this plays out. Ā And then weĀ wait up to 5 years potentiallyĀ for the real outcome!!!!

One thing for certain is that, no matter who we pick, it won't please everybody.

Some posters bemoan that we always take the "safe" option while others are complaining that we might be taking a risk.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.Ā  I'll leave it up to the professionals who are paid to make these decisions.

How could you do that? Wouldn't it be more prudent to take players that demonlanders have only seen 2 minuteĀ  highlightĀ tapes of?

if that could get us trent bianco, jeremy sharp that would be worthwhile..

Bianco, Taylor or Schoenburg (if any areĀ still there)Ā couldĀ work out quite nicely forĀ pickĀ 28.

In regards to Jackson/Pickett?

Yep

I love the Jackson / Pickett double that appears to be looming. Two wild card players with huge upside, x-factor and,Ā to my mind, both have the critical factor for success application magic and hunger. Some have it, some don’t.Ā
our failed high picks of years past, lacked it, these two boys appear to have it in spades. Pickett, it’s in the family, but his accelerating into a physical shepherd is IT. With Jackson, he rucks and then relentlessly involves himself as a mid might, while many rucks wouldn’t or couldn’t...

Bringing them in just as our group matures means they are the cream.Ā
pumped!Ā

Nothing surer than us taking Jackson and Pickett, then receiving a C+ draft assessment in the Herald Sun On Friday.

ā€with two high first round draft selections the Demons chose to go with need rather than best available. Will it pay off? Time will tell...ā€

They’d be correct!

I thought the argument against him was that we don’t need a ruckman, butĀ we do need aĀ half back flanker?

Did Freo punk us?

Trade us pick 8, we'll take Dev Robertson, you don't want or need him anyway. Ok done.

Drafts Serong/Stephens, with Carlton taking the other and then leaves us out of the better midfielders?

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.Ā

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more Ā consecutive defeats.Ā

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
