Because some zones are better than others. It's definitely not a level playing field.

West Coast have 16 players, we have 1, so statistically they have 16 more chances to find a gem through this process.

...and that's why they got rid of the zones in the first place.

It's such a retrograde and stupid move that only someone like Gill would oversee it.

Ask Matty Whelan!

Surprisingly, Port and Colllingwood have no-one.

Essendon's list is huge with a disproportionate number of anglo sounding names.  Don't know enough about the rules re how far back one's heritage can be counted to qualify for NGA.  But wouldn't be surprised if they are pushing the boundaries.   They may also have their NT scouts 'helping' prospects and their families move into the Ess zone.

Time to revisit the zone boundaries!

Rules are if one of your parents was born overseas then you're eligible for a NGA spot. My son who has an Anglo name is eligible for the Fremantle NGA because mum was born in Colombia.

Thanks for info.

I'm just cynical when it comes to Ess and possible shenanigans...

btw,  is you son likely to register for the NGA draft ?  Is so, very proud for the family.

Darryl Borlase's son is eligible for Adelaide under NGA rules. Daisy missed by 3 or so games of getting to 200 for father/son before Port Power played their first game.

No, he's only 11. Long way to go yet, he's only just had his first taste of the Freo NGA this year, a 4 session clinic run over 4 weeks by Tendai Mzungu. There were a heap of kids there including those with a parent born in the UK, not sure how multicultural it is really.

My son is going to have to develop into one of these gun small forwards we're crying out for on Demonland, because I'm 177 cm and his mum is about 150 cm!

What about the Adelaide bloke called 'Anzac' - that name will get over huge if he makes their list.

Somewhat heartwarming, somewhat taking the [censored]. No doubt plays like a tough cookie.

Quote

"My grandfather was Anzac the first, then his eldest son was Anzac the second, then Anzac the second had a son and he was Anzac the third, my aunty named one of her sons Anzac, so he was Anzac the fourth.

"From the stories my mum told me I always thought it was important I name one of my sons Anzac, and he's Anzac the fifth."

Agreed.  A name like Anzac really takes the biscuit.

I wonder if he was born in Australia? There's all sorts of legal protections over the use of the word 'Anzac'. I would have thought registering the name of a child as 'Anzac' wouldn't be allowed in this country.

Wait until KOBI GEORGE in 2020 draft. Saw him at the Stingrays in round 16 and he looked like a good mover. Still skinny but had the Micky-O style

Same Kobi George thats averaged 6.6 disposals per game in the 7 games he's played for Dandenong Stingrays this year?

Yeah can't wait.

As a 16 year old.  Settle small DD36.  He is not a 30 possession midfield type.  Kid is the opportunity type forward and type we lack.  Watch him in around August next year before you get negative.

So a forward thats kick 3 goals in 7 games and averages 6.6 disposal per game?? Even as a 16 year forward thats still poor numbers.

Mate you're carrying on as if he the next Micky O'..

I watched him play against the Murray Bushranger back in round 18 and he had 3 disposals for the whole game.. yep we sure do lack that kind of forward ?‍♂️

Can absolutely say he'll be lucky to get picked up next year. Rookie list at best if he improves a little next year

Not that unequal.  We have a potential goldmine if the club puts the work in.  Our zone has a massive Sudanese population.  If the club pull's it's collective finger out and gets active recruiting and running academies for these kids we'll be able to pull in some serious talents.

How long do you need to live in the zone for an NGA spot? Can you move just before draft time?

Combination of the resources we’re putting into it, and the junior system already in place within our catchment zone.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
