Will we look elsewhere for another small forward, or potentially put that into upping the offer for Frost?

Agree maybe Mahoney was keeping the $$$ aside for Elliott.

Think on it this way.  Would you trade Frost for Langdon?  That (and moving about 9 places in the 2nd round) is what we are doing.

Here's the thing with Frost that I think our bias (and I mean that in a good way) gets in the way of:

Over the past few seasons we've recruited quite heavily in our back half.  Hibberd, Lever and May have all been brought it in at a pretty decent cost, and it was clear that guys like Oscar and Frost were viewed as nothing more than depth players.  Why else would we have gone on such a recruitment drive in our defence?  If we believed those two were the future then we would have backed them in.  Recruiting those three over the past few seasons is evidence of the fact that we didn't.

However, with injuries, Frost stood up in defence and had a pretty darn good season.  Nothing wrong with that and, at times, he really did some good stuff.  Other times... not so much.  But in such a horror season he stuck out like dogs balls with his run and dash and his ability, at times, to play very well on key forwards.

Because of this season, he is asking for a very big pay rise, which the club refuses to meet and with good reason.  Our first choice back line doesn't include him, and he is asking for money that would indicate that he is a key cog in our backline.  There is nothing wrong with him asking for that money based off this season, but there is nothing wrong with the club putting what they think is a fair contract on the table either.  Obviously there is a gap there and he looked elsewhere to see what he could get.  The Hawks have obviously offered him better terms, or he sees the Hawks as an opportunity to play AFL footy regularly as opposed to potentially spending more time at Casey in 2020.

The club would be making a bad decision paying big bucks to a bloke who not only has his flaws, but also doesn't fit in our best 22.  We can't sign blokes to big dollars in case we have a few injuries - Oscar and Petty are more than capable of coming in where needed and they're being paid far, far less to do it.

The club is well within it's rights to do what it has done, just as Frosty is.  If he leaves and we can get a pick out of it in the second round then I won't be complaining.

THIS

Frosty for captain.    Captain courageous!

We just don't understand what we have until we lose it. I am not joking.

I thought we are to improve our list not get rid of someone that finally is starting to blossom.

I read through the Top 10 B&F at all the clubs.  Frost is probably the only top 10 player not being retained or offered a contract.  It’s madness.

Ed Langdon 5th in Freo's BnF. Whoever gets him must be genius traders then.

Brad Hill 3rd too.

Where did Frawley play?

I think he was a lot safer with ball in hand than Frost. Chip was AA.

Interestingly when asked about Frost, Mahoney straight away mentioned Elliott’s decision in relation. I got a very slight hint that maybe we will revisit what our offer to Frost could look like.

You're not joking that we should make frosty captain???

I think you have had enough internet for the day... That could possibly be one of the most outrageous posts on demonland.

We’ll probably be looking to use that money. So it’s a possibility.

Thanks I just got off my pills  and lost it . The captain part of course l am  joking.

I feel so sorry for the kid he was showing promise.

We Keep Oscar Mc and Flick Frost!! Sounds like an a drug trip gone wrong... Utter Madness!!

@picket fence - we get it. You dislike O Mac and think he’s inferior to Frost. I won’t argue on that point. However, @binman and others have posted about the fact:

1. Frost is out of contract and O Mac isn’t.

2. Frost is asking for a lot more than we’re willing to pay.

3. O Mac is probably untradeable (ie no one will want him) or of little value

4. Paying Frost what he wants may mean that we are hamstrung trying to re-contract a large part of our list who are OOC at the end of the year.

Would you be happy to pay Frost what he wants knowing that we might struggle to keep those OOC at the end of next season?

Why keep NQR Players on the list Contracted or not?

Succesful clubs don't do this!!

ANB, Oscar, Stretch, Spargo , JKH? the list goes on,

How many of these players would get a game at another club??

NOT ONE.

But Frost HAS Value!

I reckon and its only my opinion THIS will COME BACK and bite us well and truly!

Do you know what Frost is asking?

If someone doesn’t want to be at the club, why would you keep him? Surely it’s that simple. I don’t care how good or bad he was. If he can’t buy into the red and blue, get the best deal you can for him.

Ive certainly gone cold on Frost. And it’s obvious by the clubs reaction - or lack of - that they have too.

Best of luck sunshine.

Frosty 2019 would certainly be an upgrade on Hibberd 2019.
Hopefully Hibberd can get back to his 2018 form.

In place of one of Hore, Hibberd, Jetta, Lever or May.

I think Frosty has the measure of Hore and possibly Hibberd now, Jetta is aging and how often have Lever and May actually been on the park over the past 2 seasons.

Given the season we have just had, I would think it's fairly evident that depth is highly valuable, even if it's just for creating pressure for selection.

Frost had a better year. However he is a confidence player and could just as easily go backwards again as he has done before. Not desperate to keep him on a multi year deal. One year deal is the best I could offer

Successful clubs don’t do this??? Every team has depth players.

Ryan Schoenmakers is a perfect example at Hawthorn.

And Jetta hardly made it on the track and is ageing.  Frosty can play on a small medium and tall.  Jetta is limited to a small or slightly taller.

Tell us the last contracted player that was delisted.....

NQR contracted players are tradeable...if someone else will have them.  It's not up to the seller.

Well that's a bit rude even if true George!  And here's my pre-emptive Picket style parley in response to that little gem (apologies in advance to Picket...and George!)...

I think many on here would feel more comfortable, if a trade of Frost was linked in some way, either direct, or by use of picks, even shuffling of the pick, to getting another player.

Of course one way or another we will get another player, as unless it is a very low unusable pick, we will use it to draft someone.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
