Does anyone think we won when we traded pick 2 for Tyson and Salem?  I am not a fan of this plan.

Some posters here think we did, wait until they break out the ‘We were going to draft Billing’s argument’. Personally right now, I would even prefer Billing’s over Salem.

god no.

We'd have more success splitting the atom.

Coling Young, owner of CSA who manage a ton of gun players was saying this morning he thinks a few clubs will look to split picks this year due to the quality of the draft. Especially clubs with top 10 picks. He's been told that when in conversation with club recruiters.

Our first pick will basically be pick 4 after the priority pick and academy pick for GWS, and with our 2nd rounder earmarked for Langdon it seems a wise choice for us given our lack of depth if quality at the moment.

Obviously it could change pending anyone who requests a trade out, but as it stands based on our situation THIS YEAR and all the context around it, I'm in the affirmative.

One will go to Langdon if we split it.

Yeah but it wouldn't be a straight swap. For instance if we swapped pick 3 for picks 13 & 15 from GWS (after PP and academy picks) then we could swap pick 15, 41 & 59 for Langdon and Freo's 2nd (pick 26). Freo have Henry who lets say gets bid on at pick 20, they'll need 715 points for him, pick 41 & 59 combined are worth around 570 so they'd only have to go into deficet a minimal amount next year while keeping an early pick (Hill/Kelly trades pending). While we'd get Langdon and go to the draft with 13, 22 & 26.

i can understand the 'logic' of doing both

use pick 3: take best talent available

split pick 3: add two talented players to the list

given our clear lack of depth of talent, i am completely split on which to do!

i'd prefer to take pick 3 to the draft and have first crack at 'the next tier' of talent, but at the same time i can understand that the draft is not rated that highly outside the top 2 (where have i heard that before!) and so we're better off adding two young players rather than one

it's all pot luck; you have no idea what these guys are going to be like as afl players

Can see positives in both sticking with our pick and splitting. Depends what we can get I guess. GWS option seem to be the best but do they need to trade with us? Anybody know how good Tom Green is and how keen other clubs would be on him?

If he’s likely to go at 5/6 then giants might be more likely to do deal with crows, saints or swans.Having said that with Coniglio staying if they get pick 3 and pick up Green as well it’s a good window for them.

Anybody know how Ian Hill went for them this year?

According to the media, Saints and Crows want to split their respective #3 and #5 picks and they also have GWS's #11 and #13 in their sights. (All # are pre GCS pp).  Saints need to get the Brad Hill trade done and Crows need to rejuvenate their list.  They may be a bit more desperate than us to split to get their deals done during the Trade period.

So there may be a bidding war with GWS to get their bounty during the Trade period.  GWS could easily take #11 and #13 to Draft night and sell them to the highest bidder during 'Live Trade'.   Or they can Trade them between the close of Trade period and end of Draft night.

Some creativity required.  I can see any club holding a top 5 pick dealing it to anyone with picks 10-16 and their 2020 first pick.  The permutations (and risks) are endless...

This will be an interesting side show to player trades...let the cat-and-mouse games begin?.

One would have to assume that GC will go the Rowell & Anderson combo, thus we would know who we would draft with pick 3. Unlike others waiting to see who is available at their pick on draft night, if we were going to 'split' our pick, we will be doing it during the trade period.

Could we do something seriously crazy like split 2/3 for 4  second rounders - then use these for the trades we are linked to?  Or even one first rounder and 2 second rounders?  We are holding real currency, and if we trade it out for lower picks then our highest pick is what we can trade for Langdon, etc?

I think if you get a pick in the top 5 you should use it. In saying that of the club rates everyone outside of the top 2 relatively similar then might look into spliting it.

Whatever happens for f  ksake I hope they have dropped the draft “contested, inside, ball winning animals” and focus on one other need that sticks out like the proverbials.

Don't forget splitting picks also means trading for a future first round pick. We could trade back this year and pick up a mystery first round pick next season.

This opens up our pick to any team we think isn't going to be a player and are willing to bank on not playing finals next season.

It's hard to gauge a win from a trade until the trade is well and truly done.

I don't think we "won" out of the trade that saw us get Tyson and Salem, long term at least. But in the short term when we got him Tyson was very good in his first year and played consistent good footy for a few years after that, at the time we needed to short term options to get us in the game in the midfield to build something at the club.

Not saying I would do it all over again, but we got a benefit out of it even if it didn't yield the long term result we were after.

See what's table to us to split the pick and go from there, until then it's just pure speculation.

Good idea. We need experienced players right now.

Is that what the story is about? I interpreted it as turning pick 2 (or 3) into two picks in the draft, possibly both in the top 15 to 20.

There is re-writing of history going on here - people have short memories.

It wasn't about winning the trade, it was about the fact we were so appalling as a football team that we needed to get 2 decent players into the team rather than one.

Josh Kelly is clearly a gun and Tyson was 3 yrs into his development. And altho it didn't work out - we did get Pruess - if we had Kelly as a fledgling player there is every chance we would have ruined his career as we have done with a number of low picks and every chance our improvement would have been delayed which we couldn't afford

Could be interpreted anyway. I am thinking we still need as much experience we can. The Club cannot languish at the bottom. Supporters and Members will go

I honestly think this is the year that can really either set us up to go fwd, or we dont do enough and members and fans just really start losing interest. We need to be clever, we need to be tough, we need to bold. Make decisions that might be unpopular, but those decisions might refresh us in one year.

A really critical 6 weeks coming for the club. i hope they are up to it.

I know you’re referring directly to draft and trade period but this is the most critical offseason ever for this footy club. If the members/fans feel like it’s a let down then memberships will suffer greatly until the on field product is shown. IF that isn’t great then the club is in a world of hurt.

I agree with you and yep while i was referencing the draft and trade period, you are 100% right, the club needs to get everything right, as i feel there is an apathy around us, just look at the crowds towards the end of the game, Fans just lost interest, and how many times can this happen before some members just wont come back.

Looks like Giants want our pick 2/3 to stop the next pick # holder bidding on Green.  giants-are-eyeing-off-demons-no2-draft-pick

It means GWS is less likely to take their 1st round picks to the draft and Live Trade them so it gives us a bit of leverage in getting value for #2/3.

I'd take #11 #13 and Whitfield for #2

Sounds like the Dees have a Nugget of a Pick!

With GWS acquiring Pick 2/3 it allows them to really cash in on the Pick and getting Green massive unders. Sounds like Green is worthy of Pick 3 (comparison Cripps).

Picks 11, 13 & Brent Daniels would be satisfying. Daniels is going to be a gun of a small/half forward. Small forward solved!

whitfield and 11 then?

If we acquired Picks 11, 13 and a Daniels/Player.

I would be trading 11 & 13 for Ben King along with a pick to acquire Amon (2nd or 3rd rounder).

We have the opportunity to fill in a lot of positions this trade/draft period.

Key forward, small forward and 2 wingman done...

I think it'll be 2 (or 3) for 11 and 13 plus Adam Tomlinson with some later round picks also involved. I've heard it a couple of times now.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
