Hi all. I have heard that Geelong has conceded they will lose Tim Kelly and will target Christian Petracca for next season and beyond. I would hate to lose Petracca from the club and hope this doesn't eventuate, but I believe this is real. I was told that he has met with a 'Geelong delegation' a la Travis Boak, and that there may be a little disconnect between Christian and the dees at the moment.

Ironically, if we pay pick 20 to Freo for Langdon and Saints pay pick 5 to Freo for B Hill, Geelong would probably take the 5 and 20 for Kelly and give us back the 20 for Petracca.

I wonder what compensation Melbourne would get, if any, if he were to go? I’m liking Geelong less and less these days.

He isn't a free agent. So a trade would need to be agreed upon or he would have to enter one of the draft.

If he was to go then you would have wished he was a free agent as we would have got pick 3 as compo.

We lose if he decides to leave and to be honest, I would not blame him for leaving.

Firstly, what irony?   Secondly, Petracca is under contract so we would only trade him if the deal was suitable.  I hope he stays.

There's clearly been some chatter between his management and the club about where they see him playing in the coming years.

Looks like he's wanting more midfield time, whilst looks like the club's response is get fitter.

Thought Petracca played very well yesterday through the middle.  Looks like he, just like the supporters, is a little frustrated that he hasn't come on quite like we thought he would.  Certainly a good player, but not yet the star he looked destined to become.

Big preseason ahead.

Hi demonstone, I really hope he stays too. The irony was in pick 20 going off-shore then potentially getting back to us.

Thanks for replying, Dan.  We'd need a lot more than pick 20 for Tracc IMO and I still don't detect any irony!!

Have you heard anything about this down cattery way @Mach5??

Heard nothing, but it wouldn’t surprise me too much of the cats were sniffing around. I know in the first half of the season they were pretty hopeful on Jeremy Cameron, but that has fizzled, probably due to Coniglio leaving & GWS now being able to cough up the cash Cameron would be chasing.

I thought the cats would chase Brad Hill as a direct replacement for Kelly. Hill’s presence being the reason why Kelly wouldn’t consider Freo previously.

I will be peeed off if this club loses Petracca.  We cannot afford to lose talent like this.  Screw Geelong and Hawthorn!  They keep on getting players at the expense of lesser clubs.  Might as well be the EPL!

Not all that fussed what happens with Petracca. Reckon he's pretty fumbly under physical pressure. Plus with player attitudes being one of our biggest problems, I don't really see him as someone who will help much in that regard.

If we replace him with a decent talent who has the right attitude then I reckon it'd be a win for us.

Spot on. Doesnt work hard enough and is unreliable under pressure.

At his best he can break packs and shrug a tackle but he cannot finish or kick to a target so I cant see how Geelong will give us anything less than 2nd round.

He has definately improved this year and I'd like to hold into him for one more year to see whether he could back it up.

What am I missing here?  PM if necessary please.

I have heard Petracca is unhappy and looking at his options.

I cant see us letting him go.

Trac seems like an emotional kid and I think as long as we improve next year, he’ll stay long term.

If Trac is unhappy he hasn’t shown it in games. Very good season and can hold his head high in my view. I’d hate to lose him.

Sell high, buy low.

Apart from Petracca's being a core part of the club that I'd hate to see go, he also hasn't reached his peak so we wouldn't be getting full value for him. He's clearly on his way up, with his most consistent year to date.

Trac is in contract for next year.

Cats cannot offer draft picks alone so it would take their first pick which is only 2 picks before our present second and a reasonable player.

It all comes down to assessing whether 2019 form is the best we get out of him. I really have no idea on that score.

If Petracca asks for a trade to the Cats, we should get whatever they harvest for Kelly.  CP5 will be in the top 5 of the best and fairest this year. His ability to win ground balls is impressive, and he is only at the start of a great career.  If he wants to go, he is under contract and the trade would need to be suitable.  However, I hope we are into heaps of players, too.

Kelly is out of contract and has publicly stated he wants to go home. Cats know they will be screwed.

Must keep. Has improved year on year, thought he had some really good games in the second half.

Slightly down on stats this year, but that's understandable when the team has performed so poorly.

A fit and firing forward line with Mcdonald, Weiderman, Melksham and some new small forwards would do him wonders, allow him to spend more time in the midfield and rest forward.

We can't lose talent if we want to get out the rut we found ourselves in this year.

I’ve said for a while now that I believe we have become just a feeder team for the bigger clubs. It just feels like the afl is becoming the epl more and more. Afl don’t really care either, bigger club’s success means more money for them. We are not a big club

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
