It would be an unmitigated disaster for the club to sack Goodwin at this stage. This time next year if we are at the same level, then action should be considered. Of course if our season is anything like as bad as this one, he will go a lot sooner, as media and supporters will be relentless in their demand for it.

If only it was a slow and considered task to sign Goody. I realty it was quite the opposite. Rushed and hasty and decided by Roos on the basis of one lounge room chat with two of Goodys SA along for the ride. That is a matter of fact.

All good, it doesn’t mean we didn’t enquire. He may have been out of contract around the same time we were looking at Roos successor. Although that probably doesn’t tie in with the way they were planning the succession plan.

Teams have not worked out how to stop our forward entries in so many game we win the forward 50 entires. At times out midfield has transitioned well. We are simply our own worst enemy. We had the saints at our mercy in the first quarter but squandered a great start with atrocious delivery, unforced mistakes one after the other. Just unable to execute the basics in footy a  local footballer can do. 

We are devoid of confidence and skill. It’s palpable and appears irreversible. I’m convinced now it’s the club. It goes beyond personnel. I’ve never really not wanted to follow the dees but I’m now at that point. We have a disease and it feels terminal.

I think you might be right here Pennant. It’s quite common for less experienced coaches to overcoach when under pressure rather than to maintain the norm.

interestingly when a coach gets the sack, it’s very common that the players report the new coach (fill in coach) encourages them to play with freedom and use their natural instincts. These are the very 2 things that suffer if your overcoaching.

I have a theory about our demise this year, and it all revolves around “confidence” ( and a little about injury)

Our game plan revolves around “attack”, but we simply do not or can not set up defensively behind the ball when we take it forward. Our attacking players now have the added pressure of knowing that if they miss a target, no one is set up defensively behind them, and it’s most likely the opposition will freely rebound and score a goal. Instead of feeling confident someone has their back, they are simply facing a life and death situation every time they dispose of the ball. In short they sh it themselves and boy does it show.

When Roos came to the club his game plan was based on defence. And he slowly taught us how to attack only once we knew how to defend. I think our game plan has put aside the defensive skills (behind the ball) in preference for all out attack - which can only work if we hit our targets.

My solution for the rest of the year would be to concentrate on defensive set ups behind the ball, and therefore provide the player forcing an attacking play with the confidence that if he does miss a target , it ain’t gonna be the end of the world. 

No team of afl standard footballers displays the abysmal skills that our team has displayed this year - not without a valid reason. Our players are not unskillful - they are simply displaying those traits. I think that is due to a lack of confidence, due to defensive faults in our game plan.

A lot of it comes down to work rate to create space.

That’s a worry DeeZee, that description typified the Neeld era. Players not presenting to the ball carrier when we had possession (however occasionally) and in reverse players protecting space rather than attacking the opposition ball carrier when it was coming back. Did we ever work out what that period was about? The players had zero confidence, were afraid to make mistakes and seemed totally confused by Neeld’s game plan. Have we arrived here again, albeit with a much more talented squad?

We get scored on the same way every week, 666 has been a death knell to set up, teams getting over the back, lack of pressure and so on is clearly coaching!

Skill execution is a player problem but in part come back to player development.

 

 

Every other coach including the top teams have dealt with the 666.. if Goodwin hasn’t he should sacked...pure & simple the game evolves & coaches need to adapt. Roos implemented to work both ways ... what’s happened to that foundation???

Great post. I have been pretty supportive of the club and our coaches and while this year has been an on field disaster I'm still confident this year is an abberation. This said if we're in the same position again next year heading into the bye then Goodwin will have a tough time keeping his job.

I reckon we will see some significant changes in the Footy Department at the end of season along with players.
