OK, Round 1 game on the line with 10 minutes to go. How confident would you be and who would be the players to step up.

Hard to say without understanding the context, but I’d be a lot more confident if I knew that all 22 players were coming off a full pre-season and could run out the last 10 minutes at full pace.

No. I would get some new recruits in by hook or by crook. None of our players is up to a fast “outside mid” role.

funny thing is we have no roles for outside mids...consider  ;)

You want Hogan back? He has a stuffed foot!!

We gave him the last foot injury l am sure you remember or aggravated his foot in the game at the G. Injury free he was our best bet.

However it is hard to hold a WA boy.

How about an imposing forward who can mark and kick goals!

Trouble is the much safer bet with a top-end pick is the best midfielder type.  And at this stage we're staring pick #2 in the face.

KPF selections throughout the history of the draft has a history of turning up busts.  Even so,  the big blokes take longer to develop and blossom anyway and our needs are immediate.

Maybe with a later pick but our best option might be to trade for a KPF.  We could use next years first round draft pick especially if the club believes we can bounce back into finals contention next year.

Much like we've done with May & Lever down back.  Even Frost came to us through a trade.

And there's always free agency but I'm not sure who might be available anyway.  That's what our recruiting people are there for but  I see our needs up forward as being critical to our success.

The Tigers went hard after Lynch even though they looked to be in a position of strength.  No thoughts of sitting back and now they've rebooted and could win it all again.

The HTB decision today, IMO, was wrong. He was clearly hit in the head and enough to stop him in his tracks. Looked dazed and confused. So he was either out of it or it was a desperate act for a free. I'm inclined to think the former.

I agree this was yet another poor decision by the umpire, no matter who the player was. He was clearly clobbered in the tackle and left momentarily dazed and unable to complete a disposal. Yet the umpire was so quick to blow the whistle and call holding the ball, disregarding the welfare of the player. Now okay we can take the free kick against the Melbourne player, but why isn't the same criteria applied when an Eagles player holds the ball, gets swung around, or drops it to the ground and we hear the whistle, followed by the words, Play On! We only ask for fairness, is that too much?

Yep Max held the mark and then it was punched away. Eleni has NFI and te players all sort of stopped waiting for the mark to be paid.

She is a joke and only getting games on the basis of equality. On her merits, she’d be umpiring VAFA Div 5.

She may have cost the Blues the match against the Dorks in Tassie earlier this year also when she allowed Bruest (i think) to move 2 to 3  meters inside the boundary and open up the angle on goal when he had clearly taken it just inside the line (forward pocket).  He may have kicked it anyway but she made it that much easier by not paying attention while setting the mark.

Oh Pruess was pathetic , Tim Smith a better option

Thought Lockhart was actually playing on Jetta and he had no impact on the game either.

They got on top of us in the midfield in the last was it fitness, Oliver had  just two disposals.

Man our turnovers hurt us, we deserve to be 17th.

The year has thrown up three things.

1. Our list lacks class

2. Goodwin is struggling bigtime

3. We need X factor.

PS let's go after Josh Thomas at seasons end!

Possibly a bit to do with that Shorty (HP fitness & conditioning ...Misson?).

Add a very poor forward list that can't convert in front of goal (excluding Fritschkreig who played his first game as a genuine forward for most of the match...until he began playing a HHF role late in the game and became less effective); and

Goody's obsession in persisting with the manic chaos game for the entire match = inevitable major fatigue fail / intensity drop = opposition coming over the top FTW.

I am probably on my own here but I still want Preuss in the side.

He still provides good ruck support for Max and takes a good defender in the f50.

He is not marking well which is obvious but he is getting his hands on the ball and bringing it to ground. Imo it’s only a matter of time before he starts clunking them.

Although l am gutted today for the loss l cannot heap enough praise on two brothers Josh and Corey Wagner. Josh had 21 poss and 7 marks and played his role and Corey kicked two goals with 17 poss 3 marks Both had an influence in the game and are real handy pickups for our club.

Well done boys.

Both your boys played well today Mr Wagner

We’ve been able to get it from the midfield to inside the fifty all year very well. We can’t convert that into goals. We need forwards not more midfielders.

Strangely. As do i...Just give him the help and training. I reckon he has the seeds to griw into a very useful player. He normally yakes a goid grab...today...oh well.

That's (at least?) the third time this year we've lost despite leading at three quarter time (WC twice, Adelaide).

The disappointment is that taking just one or two of those chances and going on to win would give us some of the confidence we are clearly lacking. Would obviously also have us out of the bottom 2.

We're not as far off the top 8 as a 5-12 record and 17th place on the ladder would suggest. The problem is, neither are most other sides. It's an even comp, and we've made so many mistakes that 16 other sides have been able to muster a better record.

Still too many turnovers, still too many players taking the wrong option in the forward half, still too many easy shots on goal being missed, still too many defenders who haven't played with each another enough.

Preuss and ANB should be in the VFL (Preuss seems to be the opposite of a whipping boy - getting plaudits for doing absolutely zero on the back of the fact that, what, he's got a big body?). Fritsch is a forward, I hope we keep it that way.

I remain confident that we're not as far off turning this around as many others think, but I'm increasingly frustrated at the same mistakes being shown each week.

We need to realise that we  have about 6 players at present that are VFL players at their best however are trying to play AFL. Get through rest of this season, get those 3 or 4 players out injured that would play in our best 22 and recruit one or two decent players with some kicking skills, leaving players like Lockhart etc in the two's to learn their craft a bit more and we will look a half decent team again. And by the way someone has to put a HUGE rocket up Trac's A and then follow through up Hunt's.

The player who we traded away Josh Kelly for?

Plus the bloke who could win our B and F, if the big beard doesn’t.

Why is there obsession from some about Josh Kelly?

Roos has said that the Club would have taken Billings for the pick that was traded away .....

With our top end pick (if we use it) we are almost compelled to take the best available young talent.

And the history of drafting tells us that the best talent available at pick #2 is almost certainly a midfielder.

The restricted talent available doesn't necessarily lend itself to drafting for needs like it is in the NFL for instance.  That's why KPF's are often traded for.

We could trade an established midfielder for needs though.  Or just find a way somehow.

I believe I'm right in saying that Lynch was a restricted free agent so all Richmond had to do was fit him into their salary cap.  That's what you call a bargain buy.

We should be looking at doing something similar but again,  others here will know who might be available.

No way. He has had his chances and his efforts today were pathetic. That tackle on McGovern and dropped chest mark leading out on his own were not AFL standard. Just does not have a football brain and needs some more time at Casey learning and improving skills.A few others need this also but we do not have the cattle. I'm sure he can be a good player for us but not now.

An Umpire who gives a free kick and 50 meters at the same time to the WCE and in front of goal which he kicks because Lever said something is giving  a gimme goal. The Umpire in question uses the number 1. His name is Chris Donlon There are two O's in DONLON and two O's in MORON.

Except it was the other male umpire Deboy, number 11 I think. Turned to Lever and said” you know what you said”.

Very quick to pay the 50. I think they got 5 goals from frees, most of which the commentators referred to as dubious or just plain wrong.

Dont let anyone tell you that umpires have no influence on games.

Did you watch the game today? We did not "persist with the manic chaos game for the entire match".

Training reports on here during the week initially had the boys not doing practice at goalkicking, shortly after it was reported they came out early in the morning and practiced before the session.

Surely it would be better to incorporate it between drills and after the session where the legs are a little heavy rather than when players are as fresh as daisies. Wouldn’t we better off in front of goal if we prepared properly for it? You know...’Play like you train’.

Very frustrating as a supporter to see so many simple shots missed all year. If we are frustrated how would the boys feel? It saps confidence, how many of you actually hold your breath without realising when watching some off our chains towards goal? I nearly passed out from one passage, not knocking their effort it’s there, but sometimes they make it so hard for themselves to score a goal.

Didn't Max hold that mark and it wasn't paid, or was the same position earlier in the quarter?

What rule is there that says you can't take the ball on the ground?

They are very clear you can't dive on it and you can't drag the ball in under your body but there's no rule that says you can't take it on the ground and move it towards you to give a handball. The Eagles players jumped on Gawn and created the stoppage. Ball it up.

Exactly. Appalling decision.

How good would it be if Tracca had a tank... sigh

Fritsch up forward is a game changer.

Begs belief why he was down back for so long.

Wagner (Older) did well as well I thought, was hard at it in contests winning several.

Brayshaw did well keeping Yeo quiet, maybe that was the trade off of him going back into the center.

Petty worth continuing up forward, Lewis also.

Poor games from Preuss, Lockhart and female umpire

Can everyone learn Eleni Glouftsis’ name. I’m really over hearing “that female umpire was rubbish”.  It’s not the gender making  the bad decisions.

The sexist drivel I’ve seen on Twitter & Facebook pages is gross.  She absolutely deserves to be bagged for the bad calls but i don’t get why it always has to come back to gender.

I agree

Would love to see him play more midfield.

Nothing to do with gender. She is referred to as the female umpire, as she is the only one and not everyone knows umpires names.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
