Goodwin: Jake Lever has improved significantly. He won’t play this week, but we’re really confident he’ll be back next week.

Goodwin: Michael Hibberd will play. He’s done a lot of training over the last couple of weeks + he’ll be ready to play up in Brisbane.

Goodwin: We train with speed, we train with intensity + there’s no question we want to maximise our year. Today’s session indicated that - I loved the way they went about it.

Goodwin: It’s been a tough year on the injury front. Joel Smith has been ruled out for the year with that groin + Jeff Garlett is going to have surgery on his shoulder.

Goodwin: To start to get some guys back from injury is pleasing, but the injuries have also given us opportunity. We’ve been able to play guys like Harrison Petty who has been outstanding.

Goodwin: We’re starting to see some real growth in our younger players. We get a chance to develop them at VFL level, develop them at training, + they come in + perform for us.

Goodwin: Kade Kolodjashnij has had a history of concussions but this one is on the minor scale of things - it certainly wasn’t a heavy head knock. He won’t play this week, but he’s progressing really well so he’s a big chance to play the following week.

Goodwin: We enjoy travelling + this is another really good opportunity against a strong club. We know there’s a huge challenge there, I really like the way Brisbane go about it, so we’re looking forward to it.

Goodwin: We want to build a winning culture + that means you go into every game wanting to win + to perform strongly.

Goodwin: Sam Frost + Steven May both have the ability to play tall + small which give us flexibility.

Nah it's over.

Not only are we looking at having to win 10 straight to end the year, we need 6-7 upsets, including 2-3 HUGE ones, to go our way at the right time. PLUS %.

The best we can do now is finish as strong as possible and get some momentum going. Big scalps wouldn't hurt either. All of Eagles, Pies and Tigers would be great.

Don’t be Jumbo. He wouldn’t have played out the game if it was serious.

It’s time this club put itself under massive pressure, and came through it strongly, rather than saying it’s all over after 13 games.

I am really tired of that...

I agree but I'm really just setting expectations for fellow supporters. finals aspirations should be over. The club should be looking to use the next 10 weeks as the start of an extended pre-season. Pivital we win at least 6 of our remaining 9 games.

Like Joel Smith?  Like Hibberd clearly coming back a week early?  From memory I think Melksham might have played out the game against the Gold Coast too?

And that's just this year.

I wouldn't put anything past our incompetent medical staff.

Sigh.

I understand your point but do you really think they would’ve risked him given his injury history with knees if he wasn’t able to come back on?

Goody looking a bit more relaxed which is great to see. Love that the boys are doing hard and contested training. I’m pretty confident we’ll do ok against the Lions.

Of course, it wasn't a vital JLT one.

My concern with such smothers is that players are coached to crunch into the kicker's leg; especially when the player has knee history.

what other dark arts do they coach @Tony Tea? As @Macca has said on another thread.. "You go in for the smother with your fingers in an almost fist like position ... at the appropriate moment,  flick your fingers back" as a way to con a touched ball

Round the neck,  holding the man,  the push from behind have all been exploited.... all grey areas.

There is no doubt that the game is difficult to umpire. I was watching the tennis and I thought that with two players they have eight on court officials & six ball persons, if we extrapolate that to the AFL just for laughs that would be 144 officials and 108 ball people, what could go wrong?

One of the biggest problems Australian Rules football has is free kicks. Players get up to all sorts of tricks to be awarded a free kick eg Joel Selwood ducking or raising the shoulder so he gets tackled high. There are now so many rules that can result in a free kick that the entire game can be won or lost entirely due to free kicks rather than good play, good skills such as kicking, marking, hand passing and running fast with the ball. The game is being absolutely destroyed by yearly rule changes, leaving the umpires and players confused and looks more like a rolling rugby maul now than our football game.

Don't be silly, those are all completely unrelated injuries. Just like Jetta missing most of the season with a knee injury that is completely unrelated to the knee injury that he was carrying previously.

Some insightful posts here.

It's in answer to your incorrect posts

Joel Smith developed OP nothing to with injury

Hibberd puts his body on the line and unfortunately he dislodged the plate, happened to me with same injury.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
