Did Brown cop a fine for staging earlier on in the season vs Adelaide? If he didn’t, no player will ever receive a fine again for staging.

Saw that too.

Trac's dive was embarrassing and worse than anything Walters did imo

hopefully Goody has a strong word

Despite what Gil might try to intellectualize, the AFL is truly an amateur outfit - a wonderful sport (Australian Football), run by complete and utter amateurs - at every level.

I asked the question on another thread so if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

When Jones caused the reversal of Viney's free kick, why did they also get a 50m penalty too.  The same thing happened at Casey yesterday and it does not make sense.

After the free Jones gave away, the TV commentator (Roos) said "and 50!", to which Gerard Healey mumbled something about it coming from the goal square. I thought he meant that something else happened in the square just after Jones' free. Not sure though. Healey is such a dull commentator, he's hard to understand.

Edit. Now I think Healey meant that it's an automatic 50 when it's a point kick in and there's a indiscretion off the ball inside the forward 50. That's my reading.

He sure did, but only because holding the man has become legalised by bad umpires. The game would open up and more goals would be scored if players couldn't lock on to their opponents any time the ball was in dispute. I wouldn't want Trac going the big dive but I thought the handball out in front tactic was worth a go when he found himself in a bit of a pickle.

I thought it was hilarious. He was being held but played it up in such an awkwardly absurd way with the delayed reaction.

He has no history of it, strong word not necessary.

Is that another new rule that few if any have heard of?

the jones reversal cost us 150m and it's just crazy and not right,

lost 50m free to us, 50m free to freo plus 50m penalty  = 150m or 3 kicks in effect

a ball-up (i.e. one cancelling the other) would make more common sense

and who ever heard of an automatic 50 just in one section of the field in one certain play? more afl interference, if true. ...... and it wasn't an indiscretion during a kick-in, that was the walter's one, this was well after the kick-in, but it seems the umpire can't work that out for himself

The ball was with Freo in our goal square

I have a different slant on players from opposition teams being quite often given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to penalties being incurred during games against us. I think that the MFC is on the receiving end of a well orchestrated, "try it against this mob because you can probably get away with it........they are hated by Umpires, so stretch it to the limit" . Would i go so far as to say that it comes from within the Clubs or on field, anyone's guess, but i put it out there anyway.

That moron Christian will justify anything he is told to from above.  Can't have important Freo players out too long, and after all it was only a MFC player he butted.

Hold the phone. You can't allow Walters to be suspended this year. Not on a trumped up head butting charge. He was in with a chance of winning the Brownlow for goodness sakes. The AFL has dropped the ball on this one.

ok, wasn't clear on that,  but after the free was awarded to us, so kick-in now negated and 2nd infringement was then after and a separate event. does this mean that we would have got the free and a 50m (i'm confused over crazy rules), if so this means the penalty was 200m (50m + kick to us, 50m + kick to them). seems way, way over the top

how often do you see someone penalised for a cheap head knock get some treatment and the umpires ignore the treatment?  what was worse, the head butt or the retaliatory hip and shoulder?  the proportionality doesn't stack up.

anway it really pizzes me off, in case you couldn't tell

I note also that Jadyn Hunt and a Freo bloke got pinged for wrestling - I’m assuming that it was the one on the southern wing boundary line. Whilst Jadyn was clearly milking the “tangle” of legs, the Freo bloke unashamedly dropped the knees into Hunt’s head - right in front of the adjudicating clown. No mention of this any where in the MRP comments. No thought of a free kick reversal there! Just another example of the double standards.

was amazed at that. how the umpire didn't play a 50m against Hunt who might as well be bear hugging him to stop him retrieving the ball is beyond me.

I thought his 'collapse' looked far more convincing than some of the 'falls' Oliver has taken.

Then it is a reversal where the incident happened and the 50 was wrong, like many of the decisions in that game.

so if jones hadn't intervened would lockhart have taken his kick in the goal square where the ball was????

Yeah. you're probably right there, seems to be the way.

I hope not. Love him as a player, but I just hate cheap shot off the ball things, even if they're 'low impact'.

Do you mean in terms of acting ability, or more genuine?

Should but not necessarily would is the answer to your question.

Really disappointed in this bloke & good to see he got a week for headbutting.  He used to be one of my favourite non MFC players because of his fearless attack on the ball & unselfish play.

Saturday changed that - he was acting up for frees & milking it shamelessly.  He was tackled legitimately but went down like he was shot & got paid a free for over the shoulder, later on he again got tackled fairly by Petty I think & milked it again & sucked the umpire in for another free.  Spectators at the ground picked it up & he was then booed the next few times he went near the pill.  Really poor umpiring.

It is almost time that 'stagers' were penalised for some form of dishonesty. It is evident when it occurs, own Team or opposition. Ducking the head and rolling up the arm to get a hand around the neck - and then the performance (a la Selwood and Dangermouse) - is almost ruining key elements of the game. There are other such pretences and the outcomes of these types of dishonest attempts to milk a 'free' are too costly to the game for these to continue. Brown, at Norf, is another suspect.

Had Jones not accosted him he may have a question to answer. As it was a rough and largely unnecessary act by Jones, those who deign on high will feel sorry for the poor little creature despite the whole crowed directly observing the headbutt. Sometimes one must wonder about the morality of the game exhibited by those who are in positions that should know better.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
