NOBODY communicating like Bernie or Lewis were the last 2-3 seasons - would Melkie perhaps find a voice?

It is such a no brainer we should just close the thread.

Max is the only captain at the club in the way he plays, the training standards he sets, the historical understanding of this club, the mentoring of younger players, the leaderships he shows and his handling of the media.

He probably even has more luck with the toss of the coin.

True on all fronts.

I just worry that captaincy is an added thing that could complicate his game. Not a great example, but kind of like Smith being made captain of the Aussie cricket team (pre sand paper) - great batsman, not a great captain.

But then again, it might be made available to him, he'd take it and his leadership could guide us to a proper evolution from 2018.

Big Max goes from strength to strength.

He has authority and leadership. He would make an excellent captain.

Max is the only one who leads, it has to be him.

Whenever I head down to training, Max is always the most vocal of all our leaders. He is the one driving the players, encouraging them and telling them where to improve. It's so obvious he should be Captain.

Lever is in a great position to be captain. Where he's at, he can see games building, and falling and could easily be in a position to implement change @Sir Why You Little

Exactly. Let Max concentrate in what he is doing now

Half Back line is a good place for a Captain

do people really think changing the captain will solve our problems?

when did it last workat mfc and turn around a struggling team

more a recipe to ruin a player

Lever or Gawn as Captain. It's hard to know the best choice without being inside the inner sanctum of the club. Lever does speak really well and looks a good fit.

Heaven forbid we reward performance

Y’know what makes me sad - the fact that it wasn’t that long ago (relative to my life which still seems to be accelerating with every passing year) that Nathan Jones was in the position Gawn is in now. “He’s obviously the leader!” everyone said. “Why isn’t he already the captain?”

I’d really like it if we could stop digging the knife in to leaders whenever things go a bit off track. I get it, honestly I do: Jones is declining, we need to start thinking about life after him. He was once our only shining light though and got elevated to where he did because he earned it. I’ve got no doubt he’s still revered and respected by his teammates. How about we go just one whole week without putting him under the blowtorch?

I don't think it will 'fix' our problem, but it's a good time to think about it. This year's a bust. Jones is on the way out, and Viney has not looked himself for a long time. If we're going to pick ourselves up off the floor, it's going to take some serious leadership.

I'm with you 100%

I haven't put either under the blowtorch. I've got a lot of love for Jonesy. He was there in our darkest times and I don't question his loyalty for a second. However, his days are numbered. That's the reality. Jones can still be revered in the time he has left in a supporting role.

Viney is on the other side of things. Young, but hampered by injury (probably still not right), and just not himself for a long time.

We're going to need a lot of changes if we're going to be taken seriously next year. Sure injuries will play their part, but a lot else has to go right. It almost has to be a rebirth of sorts. New, better gameplan (bomb it into 50 is not working), new vision and perhaps new leadership (I'm only asking the question, but to achieve different results, we need to ask questions, at least).

For the record, I don't think Maxxy is necessarily the automatic leader, even though he appears to tick all the boxes.

With all due respect to the incumbents this is all about leadership and direction. In the last quarter with us threatening (we were within 3 goals) I noticed Pendlebury position himself down back and direct traffic and get involved in the contest. On this day and not for the first time we got nothing from our co-captains. They were invisible and not a presence.

Whilst Max is the leader I think we are short on for dynamic follow me leadership. Think Selwood, Pendles, Cotchin, Crips Ziebel and so on who all can impact a game and influence the outcome. Who do we have that fits this description.

Before his knee reco last year Lever was a captain in waiting but with 2 ops is not ready to step up

Jones has been a great servant but it is time to step down and Viney doesn’t have enough tricks. He can lead in hard ball gets but only has a left foot, cannot kick more than 40 meters and has limitations in his game.

Max.

Club wont have the balls though.. not while Daddy Viney is there.

Dazzle is right on the money. Jones retires at seasons end ( after a great career) and club moves to appoint new blood.

Viney is NOT a captains toenail. Period!

For next year

GAWN CAPT

MAY ( Thats right MAY!) VC

OLIVER DVC

LEADERSHIP GROUP  LEVER, MELKS NEV

Rubbish thread

not really

captaincy has not impacted well on several players at the MFC over the last ten plus years

This thread is what it should be.

Jones was skipper when he had to be. Very tough period and a legend of the club.

Viney the new blood and cleanout. New training standards and ferocious leadership.

Gawn - leads by example probably the best player in the game.. Bleeds Melbourne and takes us there

Burn.

You're right, maybe we can change things by asking no questions and doing nothing at all.

We can call 2020: Head in the sand.

Name any other club where Viney would be Captain??

Having a not so good season and we are looking for a captain for 2020 eat them up and spit our captains out the door?

Jack is the co captain and barring any mishaps will be for a while yet l believe and if Nathan decides to pull the pin then Max could be the co captain. They would be our best 2 .

Viney  has what it takes and an injury free and at his top he would lead by example as he does many times. . However lets wait and see what he does till the end of the season and judge his performance and Nathans then.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
