Leadership is constructive criticism for lack of effort, not following the game plan or selfish play. Spraying people for mistakes is the exact opposite of leadership.

Weideman made a costly mistake last week and his team mates supported him. He responded well today. 

May needs to be careful to keep it constructive, especially before he's had the chance to establish himself in the side.

Imo we lost the game cause we can’t hit a target by hand or foot then on top of it we miss goals too.

I just don't get the "disgraceful performance" posts.

Maybe I've seen too many horrendous MFC performances over the years, but gee this was far, far, far from one of those.

We started poorly but hung in there. Second quarter was fairly even. I thought we were then the better side in the second half but once again our delivery inside 50 and our kicking for goal destroyed any chance we had of winning the game.

Aside from the first quarter, we did a lot right, again, like against the Eagles and Crows. Our skills were worse today than in those two games but with even a moderate improvement in our inside 50 work and finishing we would've been a chance in the last quarter.

To me we aren't that far away - we've just got some really specific areas to improve to be back amongst the top 8 teams again.

The biggest is obviously the forward line. What we really lack in there is that X-factor/magic/class. It's one-dimensional and no one looks capable of kicking a bag. The players who kicked 3 goals for Collingwood - Stephenson, de Goey and Hoskin-Elliott - are exactly what we lack, players who are explosive, can take a big mark, are dangerous in the air and on the ground, can get separation on their opponents and generally put away their chances. I just don't see our current forward line containing players who have a bag of tricks. This lack of potency was a major difference between the sides today.

At the same time, though, there was (and has been all year) some horrendous service to them. A number of times Tommy and Weid led out and the ball was kicked well over their heads. We dominated the centre breaks but just wasted this advantage by either completely missing targets inside 50 or kicking it straight down the throat of Collingwood defenders. Even the best forwards would have struggled with that sort of delivery.

So I think we're kidding ourselves if we think it's just delivery or just inside 50 personnel. It's both. But it's fixable and Goody is a smart operator and he knows very well what the problem is.

I really like Goody's pressers. He's calm, he's rational, he has a good mix of short term and long term thinking. He knows what's going on.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous for people to be potting Goodwin. We have kicked 48.67 in the last five weeks. We've generated enough chances to knock off the Eagles in Perth, the Crows in Darwin and arguably even the Pies today. Missing easy shots has nothing to do with the coach. We are doing a lot right and really haven't been far away from being 4-1 over the last 5 weeks.

Personally, a large number of Collingwood players looked fitter, faster and hungrier for the ball. They moved more often with purpose and we did not!

No, Lever was a 3rd tall at the Crows. So he was traded as a 3rd tall. We were one good tall short early last season, that is why he played there and you know that he was recruited to play third tall with us. 

No. As recently as last week it was reported here old Viney took players for goalkicking toward the end of practice. Are you suggested he said, "Todd you cannot practice your kicking because I am doing this with the players"  

Sorry if i mixed up your comment about the captaincy and riding on todds coattails with someone else.

We traded lever to play kpb, there were many quotes around the start of last year from mfc officials. Was he kpb? No, but was always expected to grow into that role.

Im stating that todd removed himself from the drafting process of jack and the gws gc issues at the time of his drafting. Im stating that jack being made co captain had nothing to do with todd being employed by the mfc. Im stating that the coaching staff made the decision on the form and leadership that jack had shown, and (this is just a guess) that they thought it would be beneficial to jack, nathan, and the mfc. Not because it would make todd happy.

Todd is a highly respected figure around afl circles and is regarded highly for his football nous and professionalism. While i think its great someones taking them to practice goal kicking, is todd really the guy the players are going get the most out of? His kicking was not the strongest part of his game, but as the old saying goes, those who cant, teach.

As with any employment, people grow tired or get comfortable in a position and start going through the motions. If you are suggesting this maybe happening with todd and a change in role or a fresh look from someone new can improve the mfc, im all for it, but on this subject i do not have enough information to form an knowledgeable opinion on this subject.

Yes I saw the game. Yes May was good. 1 good game in 12 weeks, hardly establishing himself as a leader.

Either way how well you play  in any one game is largely irrelevant to what good on field leadership is. 

Constructive criticism is good. Yelling at team mates for mistakes is bad. His spray of Baker who had stuffed up and got himself a sore shoulder for his troubles was in no way constructive. Didn't see what he was saying to Hore, so maybe it was great instructions and leadership

It's true and it's probably because they are. 

We missed the Frost grunt from the backline and Wagner and Hore are not quick but otherwise the backs had a dip. The inside mids did too, as did Baker. 

But largely our wings and forwards are tentative and/or poor athletes and/or just incapable of running hard, fast and hunting the ball. Petracca was good and so was Weideman. 

The disappointment was that Pendlebury was put off his game and Gawn monstered Grundy. De Goey and Stephenson were too good but that's ok. Really all we needed was some outside run and forward line class/power to really pressure the Pies defenders and things could've changed.

Win the clearances, contested possession and inside 50's and kick double the points than goals, while the opposition kick double the goals than points.

Display the worst disposal skills in the AFL.

Welcome to the MFC in most games this year.

Yes it is the truth, while his young he can learn to be a consistent performer and will grow in confidence because he has talent however he lacks that toughness as well. If he doesn't perform in the VFL then his chance of making it back will be almost gone.

I think he's (spargo)  there to be around,  while we Put the Band back together,  soupR. 

Spargo helps other forwards to get into the game.  symbyosis,  he will be better as we get better.  vica-versa..   All we need is to get some more Brothers back onto the job...  and some form will be just behind that arrangement.

 

I think Tracca will be given a rest soon...  when we have the major ity of Brothers,  back together playing the Blues.

my thing with today is that you can't fault the effort; the execution was absolutely appalling however

it wasn't for want of trying by the playing group, but our game plan (chaos footy) is clearly not working and our structure losing smith going into the game and then frost five minutes into the game cruelled us of opportunity to execute whatever the plan - whatever it may be other than 'get it, waste it' - may be

ultimately, it was the second best team in the competition playing the third worst, and we got taught a lesson in skill and ability

my three biggest bugbears:

• lack of skill by hand and foot
• lack of defensive running from midfield
• lack of ability to lower eyes entering i50

it was just all panic, panic, panic

very disheartening

Anyone else notice they left the free kick count (pies got several more) up on the big screen for the last 10 minutes of the game as to minimise the boos from a majority Collingwood crowd.

Great post Bing. Spargo is an absolute scapegoat for our forward line problems.

He obviously has his current limitations (speed, kicking penetration), but he at least gets amongst it and makes a contest.

Garlett should be sent to Casey and never return.

Well, who told them that was ever going to work? I watched it on TV and all I heard all game was a constant booing from the ferals. Even when a Melbourne player took a clean mark and was lining up for a goal the boos and jeers were relentless. They really are some of the most obnoxious supporters. And I heard from friends at the ground they gave Melbourne supporters a hard time during the game and walking out after. You can't even barrack for your own team now without some opposition supporter having a go at you or glaring at you. Really, going to the football is getting less enjoyable now. I know I've said this before, but it feels true. Something is off.
