Because we have literally not one single other key defender available? We’ve got five on the list, two are returning from injury and the other two are also in the side.

Petty will be the first one to be dropped anyway.

And without Salem was literraly the only defendwe you could rely to  kick it to a teammate

yeah we really missed him, hope he's back this week.

Agree. He could’ve taken a few intercept marks along with some spoils and had a pretty decent first half yesterday. Instead he went for some safe spoils. Then he cops a knock and looks limpy and slow.

He slow and lacks a physical presence at the contest but there’s still signs of talent with reading the play, quick hands and a nice kick. Needs to go back to Casey and show 6 weeks of consistent form rather than a couple of good weeks then a couple of quiet games.

No doubt he'll be back at Casey as soon as a better, fit & hopefully in form option is available.

For his development though, I'd be playing him forward for the rest of the season with the simple instruction of trying to mark everything he can. Hate to use this bloke but James Sicily is an example of a player who's been developed really well by playing him at both ends. I think Petty has the basis of a very good skill set

when you stick a guy who is 206cm and 109kg in the goal square who can mark and who can kick, the opposition have no choice other than to play one of their best defenders on him, this means that the likes of Tmac and Weideman get the next best defenders. This is exactly what happened last year when hogan played, he naturally got the best defender (or double teamed) freeing up Tmac to be far more dangerous than he is now. Our game style all year has been to bomb the ball inside forward 50 and hope (or spear pass it directly to the opposition), Preuss gives us far more hope of a mark than anyone else in our club apart from Gawn who is better used to ruck and play spare man in defense rather than inside forward 50.

This is a very important message, folks. With Brayshaw in the midfield doing his 360-degree thing, and Harmes/Salem receiving and passing, not Jones and Viney 'bombs', there is an extremely good chance that such a scenario will work very capably for both Preuss' presence, and more relief for TMac (and others) to get into space to receive the incoming ground-to-ground missiles or 'ball to ground' deflections.

I don’t know how Omcd still gets a game. He was slow. Outmuscled.  Indecisive.  Made to look so substandard.  AGAIN

As he has throughout his career!

Plenty better have played less

Hmmm Must be a Demon thing!

There have been many one-trick ponies over the years who have played in grand final wins. (Frawley for example) For my mind, it’s not so much that anyone thinks he is better than Weideman as an example, it’s just that his one trick makes many others around him better. I’ve explained this numerous times but when you stick a guy who is 206cm and 109kg in the goal square who can mark and who can kick, the opposition have no choice other than to play one of their best defenders on him, this means that the likes of Tmac and Weideman get the next best defenders. So in short Preuss is used as a foil which makes those around him far more dangerous as well as having the potential to be dangerous himself.

Given that this season is shot, I think playing Preuss as a ruck/forward for a run of 4 to 5 weeks should be experimented with.

Too soon IMO :

Lever,

Hannan

May

Kolodjashnij

Kennedy-Harris

I think these guys need more game time in their bodies,  before selection in our AFL jumper.

#   I don't think Preuss suits Darwin at Night...

Good call.  Darwin at night is similar to wet weather footy.

I wouldn't be betting on Hibberd returning this week.

Smylie (Misson) hinted last week that he might need an additional week of recovery.

In - Salem, Lewis, Weideman, ANB

Out - C Wagner, Spargo, Petty, T Smith

I also wouldn't mind seeing JFK back for one of Lockhart or Stretch, but he'll probably need one more week of Casey.

Still confused as to why Lewis didn't come in for Salem. Spargo was a poor choice.

Changes. Who cares. Only one I can see that should come in is Salem for Spargo.. How we can bring others in from Casey who, in past 2 games can not beat a stand alone team. Excuses for the Port game as we had limited AFL players but against Willy we should have beaten them if we are serious about our AFL listed players . But I fear most of our AFL listed boys at Casey are really just VFL quality players. Then again so are most in the one's !!

I think this is very disrespectful to Williamstown, and other stand alone teams for that matter.

Have totally forgotten we have Hannan.

Will be nice to get him back.

Hope May gets up soon. I feel he really owes this club.

If spargo plays they play a short player

To state the obvious, the reason for drafting a player in the mid-season draft is to have that player available for the rest of the year. I wonder when the club would feel Dunkley is ready to play. What would he need to do first? Get fitter? Understand the game plan? Would he be ready immediately?

I hope he understands the game plan.

Many others obviously don't.

Agree

The stand alone teams are generally stronger across the board than the  aligned teams where the aligned team has more than say 6 players injured.

They also have the benefit of training as a team whereas the Casey listed players rarely train with the AFL squad.

Over the last few weeks he has been.. Terrible kick and runs around in circles.. He is the worst player i have seen in a Melbourne jumper over the last 20 years. Big shout out to Shane Valenti.

Bingers that's how he gets picked. Someone said we'd be better playing one short so someone else thought ahhh code for Spargo.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
