Great effort. Set new standards in toughness. Just need to be more composed, and nail the goals. WCE were kicking them out of there axxxs. Probably because of experience and composure.

Just had a quick look and by my guess I think he ran at least 23 metres.

We got ripped off big time by the umps. Missed a throw - WCE goal. 2 Goal turnaround on the Smith incident - disgraceful umpiring. We now know why Rampe cracked it - Smith had the same issue except he was out to it and could not utter a word. Just as well as the AFL would have fined him his entire seasons wage. The umpires need vocal lessons so they can be heard.

I thought it might've been further than that, but that's incredible for the umpires to miss. In that instance almost everybody on the field is watching that 1 player.

What a strange and sad season. 

Like a lot of people here, I was deeply impressed by the team last night. In every area except one, of course. A horrible case of the yips in front of the goals, which has affected a swathe of otherwise reliable (tmac, Garlett) players. The dwindling standard of goal-kicking in the AFL has been well documented of late. It’s a deep shame to see the Demons as the poster boys for it, especially after being the highest scoring team in the league last year. I don’t think it’s due to a lack of skills In that area (the list has changed since last year but not THAT much), I think it’s fear of failure. And in many ways that is a much more difficult issue to tackle. We all know that mental weakness has been an issue at the club for years now, and we all see the lack of confidence, the skittishness, the nerves and the dearth of belief on display at disappointingly regular intervals. And we feel these things as fans and supporters too. It’s a shared epidemic. 

The Melbourne Demons shouldn’t invest in one or two sports psychologists. They need to invest in a comprehensive psychological  program. 

Combined with the returns of Lever, Hannan, vanDenberg, Jetta, Melksham, Hibberd and the debut of a fit Steven May, I’m quite sure by the end of this season we’ll be defeating whoever the eventual grand finalists are, and we’ll hit 2020 with all clubs wary of us. 

We’ll also win the flag and Trump will get arrested. It’s going to be a great year folks.

This one’s just a grind though. But hey, at least we can enjoy watching the club in a calmer, analytical way. Once you remove that rubbish called “hope” you can actually relax. 

 

We were expected to be flogged. But I saw a great game of football last night where the Dees played a vastly improved brand of footy for almost 3 quarters. Sure there were skill errors but we deserved to be in the lead at 3/4 time. Our forward line functioned by leading to the oncoming player more than I’ve seen so far this year, and for once our mids hit their targets. 

We lapsed back to our old ways in the 4th, but all in all we should have won the match. If we’d kicked the gettable goals (and I mean just the easy ones) we still would have won - even with an error ridden 4th quarter.

so we may be 3 and 6 but I am confident that last night has shown that we will be a force for the rest of the year.

As for the umps, they didn’t lose us the game - we did. ( free kick count 22 to 21 in our favour).

All is not lost. All this is making us stronger and we are finding out and learning a lot, getting games into young players and finding  some beauties in Hore and Lockhart.

We have ten first choice players out.

Just watch us go in the second half of the year, whether we make finals or not, one step back ward and five steps forward.

We will be ok.

I’m still gutted by a game we should have and deserved to win. I spoke to at least a dozen non Dee supporters this morning who agreed we were robbed by the poor and inconsistent umpiring. I was happy to see the boys gave it a red hot go and I am now looking forward to being at the G next weekend and hoping that we can continue our slowly improved form.

Hats off to Max Gawn - he tries so hard week in and week out. We are so lucky to have him and as for that low life Vardy - I believe in Karma.

Hope Jetta gets at least two weeks. Watching Tim Smith head screw around like that made me feel nauseous. Hope he is ok.

Great post, think it’s important that we look to next year, not by tanking, but by developing our game style as well as our up and coming players. We’ll probably not make the finals, however beating as many finalists as possible in the second half of the year will go towards attracting top-end talent; free agents and out of contract players.

To be injured in the manner he was is an indication of just how plain unlucky this man is. It was a very harsh call to ping him in the first place and then to be tackled in the way he was - everybody else on the ground and in the commentary box saw it was a a foul and unlawful tackle - and to be penalised for being the victim of this kind of illegal tackle is also atrocious umpiring.

I’m still really annoyed no one flew the flag when Vardy was into Maxy.  Was a goal anyways, we needed Viney/Jones to make a statement there and fire up the boys and more importantly stick up for Max.

 

the score board pressure was the most disappointing part of last night, so many positives, we looked quick and agile.

Terrific post from Fanatic Demon. As for Brayshaw, he is out of position. Young Gus is a driver from the centre, can go two ways quite easily and his clearance initiation, and back-up, are elite.

He just gets the pill in there or can judge where he needs to be to get a receive, and uses it surprisingly well.

Put him out on a flank and he is restricted by the dimensions of that area of the ground. He no longer has his 360-degree options that characterise his game, left or right. Who the Phugg decided he was a winger? Our clearances are no longer dominant without Gus in operation - and notice that the other mids no longer have the Gus-screen when he ain't there? Goodwin has broken a combination play that was invincible.

We played below ourselves, made a lot of errors, kicked the ball to our opposition most the game, missed easy shots, had lots of players out, yet still nearly beat the reigning premiers at home. Id love to see what a competent football department could do with this group. It would be scary.

Has he ever finished a game on the park ? The poor bugger just keeps finding different ways to get hurt !
