Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

That would require a different coaching approach SWYL so good luck.

If so many of you are so sure the FD reviewed that game heavily despite the message over the offseason from the club that it wasn't (see post #4 which mentioned some of the times), please explain why that message came out?  What did they hope to achieve by publicly downplaying how much that loss to WCE was analysed? I don't get it.

Goodwin backed in his Gameplan, calling it a bad day.

I always have thought it was far worse, along with others on here.

The Coach now, either still backs in his plan or he has hit the wall.

I think Simon is a good bloke, but i have always been worried that a rookie coach would not be able to sort this club out, our issues are too deep.

He still has the chance to prove me wrong, and i hope he does, but a huge loss tonight will be a serious punch on and off the field.

Our list is not balanced, regardless of injury. The 2019 rules have completely sideswiped the MFC Football Dept.

how this happened has me very concerned.

I'm not sure Goodwin still qualifies as a "rookie coach". Not only is he onto his third season as senior coach, but he's also had many years as an assistant including a couple at Melbourne as part of a proper succession plan.

How many years do you think a coach has to serve before he's no longer a "rookie"? It can't just be that a coach is a "rookie coach" when he's at his first senior job. By that definition Alistair Clarkson and John Longmire would still be "rookies".

I can accept Goodwin was a "rookie coach" in his first year as our Senior Coach and maybe even his second. But not now that he's into his third.

I used 'rookie' yesterday referring to Goodwin and Mahoney not yet having the experience to steer us thru difficult times such as now, without Roos (for Goodwin) and PJ (for Mahoney) to guide or cover them.

I was making a case for a Neil Balme type to steady the ship and support them thru challenging times thereby reducing the risk of 'rookie' errors.   'So 'rookie' was intended as breadth of experience not time.

Maybe that is where SWYL picked up the 'rookie' reference.

Well then we think differently

Clarkson and Longmire climbed the mountain ⛰

Goodwin thus far has come crashing down to the ground, with no plan B

Its not an easy out  because Ill tell you exactley ..  and it goes back to the original post, if a proper review was done of the West Coast prelim loss then they would have identified they need to get some serious leg speed into the team.. rather than be seduced by what they think they need.. another big defender.. ridiculous. Take pick 6 and get Zac Buttress , dont use pick 27 on another inside mid like Tom Sparrow, go for Ian hill, quick outside player with great skills, Nick Hind was the quickest player in the VFL.. but we take a bloke called Aaron NIetshcke no one has ever heard of.. i could go on..  Matthew Parker is electric.. the Saints nabbed him at 47.

SO there are heaps of examples.. but im a bit over the to and fro Wiseblood, i respect your decision to disagree. Hope the Dees can turn it around.

It took Clarkson 5 years to as you say " climb the mountain" as senior coach and Longmire inherited a very professional and experienced side to win a flag in his 2nd year.

Thanks for passing on information that we all know

Goodwin is a Rookie Coach at a Club that doesn’t know how to win (still)

Clarkson and Longmire weren’t put in that situation

I'll tell you why.

As i have said on any number of occasions across multiple threads - and at the real risk of repeating myself and boring posters to death - our communication at the club is appalling. There are any number of examples from big to small.

PJ made it clear that our focus in terms of our resourcing had to be the football department as you are going nowhere if not winning. And hard to argue against that. Implicit though in that focus was that once winning began other aspects of the club would get attention.

I can only assume that has not occurred because our communication and membership engagement is not up to scratch and is a black eye on the club. And on Gary Pert i reckon. Maybe the last point is bit tough on Pert, but he has had enough time at the club to sort things and communication and membership engagement must be among his KPIs.

Our messaging (or more accurately mixed messaging), our website, our social media, how we respond to membership queries (not blaming the staff by the way on this - it is clearly a system issue and reflects a lack of investment) and our members engagement strategies are all poor.

Why don't you go into hibernation for the next 5 years or more until Goodwin is no longer coaching the Demons following a successful career.

I reckon we were D3... Gaff.  But IMO during the 2nd Half of the season changed our views on the priority of Gaff,  and at the End, showed we needed much more than foot speed/running power ...

Maybe our tall defenders hadn't come on as wanted or expected during 2019, and with Levers 2nd knee injury... the footy dept May have decided to get the best Tall back we could find.

.... And then we went to the draft, selecting quick running players.   But they are still 1st Yr players.

...................................................................

I reckon Our 2019 gloss made us look far more  'complete',  than we really were/are. We Are still building, still developing...  maybe more like  75%  finished ???

All fair points DV8. As i said, its an oponion game, i respect those who disagree, iI' in the camp that we ignored our most pressing needs and didn't react to a major loss. I hope the  players we drafted really do make it, time will tell.

Hawthorn's foot skills, for example

Geelong with their ball movement from the back half (hand and foot skills)

Both those teams "tweaked" their style over the years.

Not sure our game plan is amenable to tweaking; as we've seen over the last few weeks, it's all or nothing. When we lose, we lose really badly - we have no "give" in our structures - they are brittle.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
