Cringeworthy. One of the worst callers ever. Behaves like an adolescent fanboy and is in no way objective. If he is not fawning over a personal favourite he is stating the bleeding obvious or asking nonsensical rhetorical questions. Apart from that he’s good.

I enjoy nonsensical rhetorical questions. What if there were no nonsensical rhetorical questions???

Glad that this has come up. Bruce is kinda a sacred cow when it comes to commentary, and probably justifiably so. Go listen to some of his early work. He is right up there with anyone else to do it (I’d put him up against Clinton Grybas and Anthony Hudson in that regard.)

Unfortunately, whether deliberately or unintentionally, he has become a cheerleading shadow of his former self, and he clearly has favorites. Buddy is definitely one, of course Cyril and Poppy.. in fact, in retrospect, go listen again to the highlights of our game vs Hawthorn in the finals. His ongoing “gee that helps” commentary with every Hawthorn goal sounded like barracking.

Oh and he commentates via questions to his co-commentators “gee, that was good play, eh?”

I think he is almost close to making BT tolerable, and that says something...

You forgot Roughie!!

And his constant references to "sauce" when he's commentating Crows' matches.

Mcaveney, Brian Taylor and Duh Wayne Russel are three of the worst I have ever heard at the top level.

@ManDee absolutely nailed it with the "positive affirmation" post.

@ding actually had 3 rants for the night while watching the replay at my place, and all 3 were about how embarrassing Mcaveney was with his growling, and seeking reinforcement for his fawning.

I firmly believe that Taylor and Russel are the most shitful commentators I have ever heard in any sport, and Bruce is making a late charge.

The mute button is my friend and opens my eyes to far more of what is happening without the needles egos

Bruce has his annoying quirks (the way he says “Sahlum” makes me want to reach through the screen and throttle him until he gurgles out “Salem” correctly), but compared to the likes of Dwayne Russell, Luke Darcy or, god help us all, Basil [censored] Zemplas, I’m often reminded there are a lot worse going around than old Brucey. Despite his many knockers he’s without question one of the greatest sports commentators we’ve ever had.

I agree though that he should’ve left when Cometti did. They were a partnership that somehow worked. The chemistry with BT just isn’t there.

All the commentators last night were shocking.

They just don’t seem to give us any credit.

Its like ,we just turned 22 point deficit into a 4 goal lead and were dominating all the stoppages and they come out with “Melbourne are just hanging on”

Love hearing Bruce when say "You reckon if Melbourne can kick the next goal they'll feel like they're back in this game".,.. when we're one goal down.....

After the past three weeks, as a MFC I was actually thinking along the same lines as the comentators.  I wouldn’t have felt this way at stages last year when we were up and going, but our confidence and system has been so bad to this point, that I felt the game could have turned very quickly on us and it wasn't until late in the last, when we had nailed the door shut that I felt I could relax.

At the time, their comments were on the money, but in retrospect, it was actually a moderately dominant performance by us.

ABC radio always do a pretty good job, why can't we just get good straight callers like them on the TV?

For special comments, I actually quite like David Parkin's style.  Knows what he's on about without being full of himself.

McAvaney only said it once and it may have been in the last quarter, but he referred to one of the Wagner boys as “Vargner”!

I nearly choked on my Lazy Bear!

He fair dinkum has a Doctorate in Monkey Spanking.

I can't stand the Seven commentary team. BT talks about things that aren't there - a team about to surge, an umpire decision that he feels is right/wrong which the reviews clearly show otherwise. And then there is his horrible abuse of the english language.

Should of instead of should have

Verse instead of versus

.... anyway. I turned the sound off but it loses the crowd noise so I turned the game off. It was only dogs pies anyway

I like Bruce but I’ve been disappointed he hasn’t gone with his favourite line so far this year:

”you just feel that if *insert club* gets the next goal there back in this, DON’T YOU?”

And he can’t pronounce Salem properly to save himself.

I don't know how Salem should be pronounced, but it might be similar to Salim. So Bruce may be closer than the Salem Massachusetts pronunciation.  Just a thought

My special lady friend and I were discussing last night how great it would be if Fox Footy could implement a button where all you get to hear are the effects mics (umps, whistles, crowd noise, players swearing etc).

The red button.  It used to be a thing on Fox many moons ago and it was bliss.  Sadly too many people used it so it was canned.

Gee, Bruce says Gee a lot, doesn't he? His fawning over a potential Swans win Thursday night was palpable.

Add Ling's fawning over Isaac Heeney anytime he went near the ball and his overuse and inability to enunciate the word brilliant correctly .

It was pretty obvious that Pruess had done something to his shoulder right on the quarter time siren, but do you think the numbskull boundary reporter Jude Bolton was going to give us any updates? Oh no, but as soon as a Swans player came off injured he was all over it giving us constant updates.

With commentary teams like this on prime time games, almost makes me pine for the 440 Sunday games with Gerrard Healy, Tony Shaw, Danny Frawley and any other c-Listers willing to work that graveyard shift

I reckon Daisy was great as special commentary or boundary.  Twice as intelligent as these other fart breathers.

Bruce is just an embarrassment.  Ling is a trouser ball tamperer of the highest order.  Richo seems to be two or three standard deviations below mean IQ.

BT is there for the ‘upper middle class bogan’.  MMM take this to an unpleasant extreme. Joffie and his toofless mates are who they cater for.

unfortunately, it seems to be more about them than the game.

The last few years Bruce has become too Bruce, but be careful what you wish for: the replacement look like being one of Darcy, BT or Brayshaw. (I don't mind Brayshaw.)

I find Brayshaw not nearly as irritating since he has been dragged away from the Footy Show cesspit.

It's like he no longer has to put on a faux ocker act and can behave like a functional human being again.

Last night's game in the balance... no hype necessary and someone says... "I think the next goal decides this."

What an unnecessary and inane comment. They were words for the sake of it and were just a guess being neither a comment on play or expert opinion. Do these commentators think their viewers are fools.

BT might carry on like one, but I don't even think the upper middle class bogans would appreciate the way he calls the game.  I actually quite liked BT when he was first on the footy show and I have actually grown to like and respect Richo alot more in his post playing days - he actually seems like a genuine good knock about bloke.

But your last line really characterizes how they come across when they call the game.  Yes you want some degree of rapport between the comentators and probably also the occational wise crack or atmospheric comment but they go so far over the top it's unbearable.  My thoughts are that a lot of these ex-players that end up in the media feel like they have to build and keep building themselves up as a personality to stay in the business, but in the end it just detracts more than it attracts people to them.

The game itself generally has enough drama and entertainment value without needing much of contribution from some of the clowns that position themselves around it and leach off it.

He's obviously not what he once was. Before 7 lost the footy rights to 9 & 10 he was bloody good. When he returned I suspect he had to dial up the "Bruceness" because Anthony Hudson had pretty much spent five years impersonating him and continues that to this day. And it seems the Bruceness has been dialled up further each season. But he loves the game, loves it played well & loves those who play it best. That's not a bad thing even if he goes over the top a bit. His "barracking" was as bad as I've noticed it on Thursday but I don't usually notice any bias. He's cheer-led us in the past too - "The Dees are gonna be something" (we so weren't Bruce, unless you meant something shitehouse).

As someone posted earlier, who do you replace him with as a chief commentator ? There's not a lot of obvious replacements. Clinton Grybas left a massive hole in the commentary ranks with his untimely passing. The VFL boys do a good job although their voices are a bit bland. Adam Papalia is my personal favourite - no bulldust, calls the game and calls it well. Aside from that it's slim pickings.

At the bottom of the barrel, Dwayne Russell has given me the [censored] from the moment he hit the airwaves. But even he is preferable to the hell that is Basil. He was the reason my daughters first(& only time) heard me drop the C-bomb. He annoys me like no other and has near cost me a TV screen on a few occasions. I nearly hurled the remote at the screen during the tennis ! The bloody tennis ! How can a commentator get you that pizzed off in tennis ? He has a special gift

Yep,  agreed with this statement  'bucky'.

That's what you get with former Stars commenting on the game...  they think they are the heart of the game.

And their Ego's keep climbing over their mate next to them.   Until its a tosss fest.

IMO the game suffers,  from their EGO's ruining it.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
