What to do with Nathan Jones

The big difference now is that we do have a strong group of middle-aged leaders to replace Jonesy, unlike in Junior's day.

Yes, and a fine job they're doing of it. Two years ago, Jack Viney was the one lining up guys for huge bumps. Now, he's caught prone. There's very little leadership out there, cutting the only one with demonstrated leadership experience would be a disaster.

Hard to see Jones still being around if playing for one of the more successful clubs. Clarkson would have tapped him on the shoulder years ago. He has been the beneficiary of the botched exit of Junior Mac who still was a relavent contributor. He won’t go until he feels like it. It is damning he can’t see his time is up. Last season we could hide him because the side played really well. This season there is no where to hide him anymore. It is cringeworthy watching him plodding along and butchering  the ball on a regular basis.

He came fourth in the best and fairest last year, for goodness sake. Are you honestly saying he wasn't best 22 on talent in 2018?

Nathan Jones is a legend of the MFC.

But, much like Lewis, in 2019 he does not have the athleticism to play on the wing or halfback. Given that is  where Goody is playing him it follows that he is not in our best 22. Look at who he lines up on. Most are speedy line breakers and that is the default for the wing in 2019.

Goody needs to pick the best 22 regardless of reputation or status in the game.

We couldn't really hide him in the second half of the season either. Those of us who watched him without the rose coloureds on were saying he should have hung them up at the end of last year, because he no longer had a place on the field.

The fact Jones is experienced is what's kept him in the side. Not his leadership. He's an incredibly poor onfield leader. His head drops immediately, he doesn't rally the troops and in fact, often contributes to a rot setting in. Or like in the case of the St Kilda game, starting the rot, with the first clearance, he kicks long into the arms of a waiting defender.

Yep, this was trotted out at the end of last year by Fifty-5 and co, whose nostalgia clearly got the better of them. He's past it. Most keen footy observers would concur, except for a few Melbourne supporters.

Jones has been a warrior for the club, was only highlight thru a dark period.

i have the utmost respect for him but now it is time to retire, sadly he no longer has no influence in a game, beaten time and time again and not even offering strong leadership.

One more year under similar conditions to Lewis this year and Bernie last before him.

Had a shocker today but has offered plenty in other matches.

Is no longer a 'walk-up' starter.

Has been playing on a wing which is where demon players go to die the way we move the pill.

I think he adds more on the HFF than Spargo/Garlett and adds more in the guts than Viney at present.

Id just leave him as a forward. He’s quick enough in close and still hard as a cats scone. He just gets burnt in space and it’s hard to watch

Chuck him forward.Jones at least is willing to go back and have a set shot.

We don't have any answers for our forwards until Melky is back, so chuck Jonesy forward to see what happens.

It’s sad to see for sure but against the really quick sides he struggles badly.

Became evident in our StKilda game last year.

But the club now finds itself well and truly wedged. Is Viney Snr going to tell Viney junior to have a rest? Is the club going to pull up Jonesys career a few short of 300?

I don’t think so.

It would be typical Melbourne if, in an attempt to gift Jonesy 300 games, we lost Brayshaw who doesnt like the wing and is better inside.

I would be shocked if Viney Senior or Nathan Jones would put the interests of the club first.

Jones played his best game of the year last week at half back. This week we drop Stretch (who isn't up to it but whatever) and put Jones back on to the wing, keep Wagner at half back.

I would've had Jones at half back and Stretch on the wing rather than Wagner.

There's a chance Nathan has one more year left in him at half back. A chance.

He shouldn't still be captain but I don't think that really matters all that much, he's earnt having that a year longer than he should've.

With the midseason draft and preseason supplement period I'd have no issues keeping Jones for one more summer with the reality being if he's not performing he's at Casey or retires.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
