Hawthorn are still one of the oldest teams in the comp, they would have budgeted far more money than us from their future retirements including Roughhead. And that's not even to mention that he'd probably take unders to go there compared to us. No chance, look elsewhere.

Jones and Lewis?

With the current success that we're having I think it's important to not lose sight of continuing to add depth to the list and fix up holes in the list. So I put it to you, what do we need?

1 x Small defender: I think with Jetta on the fringe of the team now, and Hibberd nearing the end of his career,  we need another really solid small defender to play alongside Trent Rivers.

1x Outside midfielder: This largely depends on how we see Laurie and Bowie developing.  I think a lot of our improvement has come due to having increased speed with the likes of Hunt, Pickett and Langdon. I think we should double down and pick a guy with elite speed.  Even if its a late pick like the Oskar Baker/Petrucelle/Castagna mould. If Fraser Rosman develops better than expected than we may not need to prioritise this sort of player.

2 x Medium forwards: We only really have Fritsch in this department. We have tall forward and we have small forwards in Kozzie and Spargo. A medium tall with goal kicking nous would really assist us. A membrey type is what we need.

We need to find a young talented key forward.  The way the game is changing to favour the big tall forwards its paramount we get our hands on our own.

Georgiades, B King, M King, Naughton, Hipwood, Oscar Allen...

A lot of clubs have their spearhaed for the next decade, we have to finds ours.

Probably in this order.

Small defender - I’m not talking about a rebounderkng defender, I’m talking a lockdown option to clamp down on opposition gun small forwards. Jetta and Hibberd are near the end. We need a proper defender to replace them. Salem, Rivers, Bowey etc are rebounders in my eyes and not lockdown types.

Mid sized forward - Marking type like Fritsch who hits the scoreboard. We’ve targeted a few in the drafts the past few years and missed them. Need to get another one for depth.

Outside midfielder - may have been addressed with Laurie and Bowie and Rossman, but we need more quality depth in this area to compliment Langdon in future. Guys like Harmes, Vandemburg, Tomlinson etc are not the answer there.

Key defender - Lever good for long term.  May has a few years left. Tomlinson isn’t the strongest defender. Petty is still a question mark. Daw is old and depth and played forward too. Need another tall defender for depth.

Key forward - a young one to develop as our key forward are all hitting retirement age over the next few years with only Weideman as a longer term prospect. Need more talent to develop and compliment him.

Early days but I loved what I saw from Deakyn Smith against Box Hill. Pace, aggression and leap to spoil talls.

I like Harry Petty as a zoning tall defender (back up to Lever and eventually compete with Tomlinson) and probably equally if not more so as a CHF, but I think we need a May backup with pace and agility to spoil or go smaller to take a Toby Greene as May did. Hard to find but I do think we need to add more key defensive depth. I’d be looking in the mid season draft for a project tall.

Otherwise it’s skilled flexible running players. Pickett, Spargo, ANB, Bowey and Laurie probably means we need a few more with size rather than sub 180 but I don’t care if they’re 180 or 190. Hard and smart footballers who can run, kick and tackle, that’s the aim of the game.

We need a quality midfielder with speed and that can hit targets, outside Langdon we are still a bit slow in the midfield and we don't have any elite kicks in there.

We we desperate for him on draft night but Port got in first, so we picked Rivers with our 3rd pick in 2019.

Rivers will be good, but geez he would've been sensational for us.

As @DeeSpencersaid, mid sized running machines who can kick and are not afraid of the contest.

Agree mostly, I was very impressed with Deakin Smith as a small/ mid defender, I feel Rosman could develop into a wing or even CHF type.I feel we do  need to develop a key tall back and tall.forward .Bedford could develop into a running mid/ small forward , loved his game at Casey, along with Chandler .I also feel we need a top class mid.

So we've traded our first rounder this year right so our first pick at this stage is a 2nd rounder right? it's going to take a bit of creativity to get into the first 20 picks in this years draft I think.

Yes we have traded our first round pick, but Taj Woewodin (mid) is averaging 20 disposals captaining East Fremantle and featuring in the best. Not first round material by all reports, but sounds like a good chance to be drafted.

Mac Andrew (forward / ruck) is going alright for Dandenong Stingrays and is still out of top 20 conversations. If he gets bid on out of the top 20, he is ours.

And then we have (worst case) pick 11/12 in the mid-season draft if there are any 19 year olds running around that we like to look of.

I'm not too worried about not having a first rounder (as long as we make finals...) this year due to a legit NGA, father-son and mid-season draft pick.

I read a headline that 'Melbourne in danger of missing out on NGA draft boater'. I'm only guessing this is in relation to Mac Andrew?

This is the Mac Andrew article.

Trust that the year we finally have a gun NGA the rules doesn't work I out favour..

Can someone pm me the article please.

"Melbourne is in danger of missing out on its brightest Next Generation Academy prospect this year, with agile big man Mac Andrew shaping as a top-20 draft bolter."

Any chance this club will stand up for itself for once and make sure we get this kid no matter what [censored] rule they recently rushed through?   The Bulldogs got Ugle Hagan at pick 1 for [censored] sake.  Are we just going to continue to get shafted and sit there like a good little club and take it?

That's just the way it falls sometimes, nothing we can do about it if he goes in the top 20.

We're not being shafted, it's just the timing. Some you win, some you don't.

The article is a bit of click bate anyway, it's a long season and no guarantee he will go top 20...particularly as a ruckman.

They need a good headline to hang the new rules on and a bunch of supporters like yourself to get up in arms about it.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
