I have not included 2018 as too early to tell. At best we can say he has picked 7 good out of 24, but that being said those 7 , it includes Joel Smith, Tim Smith and Fritsch which in reality the judges probably still out on.

We could probably say comfortably that 4 out of 24 have been strong picks.

When we have only brought in 4 decent players via the draft over 5 years (outside of first rounders) it makes you wonder how we can field a quality side.

Was trying to be generous but in hindsight a mature age player who is on our list for his 3rd year yet to play a senior game isn’t a good sign. Isn’t the point of drafting mature age players for them to come in and have an immediate impact?

Agree with this mate, but there is a line. He doesn't have to be negative by simply admitting facts or reality. 1-5 is not a good place to be in and there's reasons for that. Supporters are trying to examine the reasons for the marked drop in results. You can't just stick your head in the sand and call yourself a loyalist. Well, you can, but it also devalues your opinion, or it should.

And being loyal is fine, but to whom? The club or to some players or staff who Saty may think are his mates? I'd much prefer loyalty to the club and that sometimes means calling it how it is. It's always rose-coloured glasses with Saty.

Sorry to get this thread going again, but I thought it was the most appropriate place to put it.

I got the opportunity yesterday to speak with the friend of mine within the McCartney family.  It's the only contact I have in terms of knowing anything from within the club, so I tread carefully in asking a few questions.

The main thing I got out of it was that the McCartney/Goodwin 'feud' is rubbish.  They are pretty disappointed and annoyed at Tom Morris, who is either making the stuff up or has horrible contacts.  The day that story broke Goody and Macca had already spoken numerous times during the day, and that has occurred for the entire pre-season and the first six rounds of this season.  Both of them are on the same page, as are the coaches.  There is absolutely nothing to those rumours.

The second thing I asked was around our start to the year.  I didn't get anything hugely specific, but it's been a heap of mitigating factors that we have discussed on here - the off season surgeries, a few players not coming back fit enough (I got no names, nor did I press for them, but I was also given the impression that these players did not come back 'unfit', they just could have done more over their break) and teams adjusting to our game style and us not making changes quick enough.

So plenty for the club to work on, no doubt about it, and we're learning it the hard way.  But one thing is for certain - Tom Morris is an A grade [censored].

If we get done by Gold Coast in 2 weeks, who will likely have come off back to back to back 50+ point losses and were touted to win about 2 games this year, then surely someone’s going to cop a bullet - Ala Neeld for the Dons last year.

This is the major failing of the club and specifically the coaching department.

The club has a hell of a lot of work to do to become successful. The improvement of 2018 has been smashed and destroyed.  It feels like we have taken two or three steps back rather than one. Our window of opportunity for finals success has suddenly become very  narrow. 

In the space of 6 weeks, we have regressed to the losing culture of the past. The players look beaten. Even in the first quarter of the game against the Tigers, we looked like a poor side playing well compared to the Tigers, who looked like a good side that could not find its rhythm. 

We can only hope that the club has the character, culture and professionalism to learn from its mistakes and can address the systemic problems evident this season.

When I was sloshing beers with Moonie on that memorable finals night I thought I was seeing the end of an era for Geelong and the beginning of one for Melbourne.

He was one of my favs in his draft year.  was that the $cully year?  

Rohan went at P6.  His speed was a real weapon.

Great summary.

What concerns me are the potential implications of this year. The introduction of free agency and two expansion clubs during our rebuild meant securing young talent got immensely harder, and the talent we took the risk on, spent the time training, and finally those few that succeeded, was farmed and rewarded to the more successful clubs - whilst we got their leftovers.

I finally thought we were out of this period at the start of last year with Lever nominating us, and our finals finish.

Being bottom of the ladder is going to make a lot of players question their future at the club, and with blood in the water the other clubs are going to start to circle.

I really dont think the club has it in it to establish a winning and professional culture without a significant change to current practices. The fact Goodwin hasnt even watched the preliminary replay is damming to their ability to learn from their mistakes and change.

Most people including Cats supporters thought as you. They looked old, slow and reactive, with a poor prognosis for 2019 and beyond.

Their reinvention says a lot for their culture, professionalism and willingness to change. Hats off to Scott, who many have maligned.

Sadly their reinvention and success this year following on finals failure last season is the complete opposite of our Club.

Of course, we all draw our own conclusions why this has happened but the difference between the two clubs and what has happened over the summer period is stark.
