Spargo will play at his best when our midfield is up and firing. Believe it or not his worth is providing the spread forward of centre and not wrestling in marketing contests with opponents double his size, which kept happening to the poor guy on the weekend.

Kielty is listed 195 can play forward or back

Can play minutes in the ruck and has a football brain which Frost doesn’t

Was Casey’s best on Sunday

Got a lot of praise from the Coach at the first and third quater huddle

Not according to the official Demons website

Stephen May in for Frost. Otherwise, no changes. We were 9 points up in the 3rd Quarter and looking good. We just looked like we did not have the pace in the heat to go with them. It was a similar story against West Coast in the Prelim.

By the by i thought Wagner did ok. Can kick, which is a pretty good start, and is hard at it. Pleasantly surprised by Sparrow, but one game doesn't make season.

Wow! Saw what you did there. Quoting Aristotle is really raising the culture in this discussion. Bravo.

I would like to see...

Keilty and May.

for

Hore and Omac.

and Viney must be in doubt...maybe Billy comes in.

Why not? Kolodjashnij comes in straight replacement for Hore and Petty who played well in the VFL according to Drunkin replaces Oscar the spud and May was always going to replace Frost. Any of those 3 stay in and spud up the side watch a belting. The midfield and forward line can improve those 3 can't.

As  I said you are sadly mistaken. If your midfield is getting beaten as was the case on saturday { and badly beaten } you will always lose the game regardless of who you playing in your back six.

I understand that but 3 that I mentioned are not up to AFL level. We need to bring in players that can play May is one Kolodjashnij is another and they need to give Petty a go he can't be any worse than the spud we have at full back now.

May and Kolodjashnij will definitely play so Frost and Hore should make way. I'm not sure they will have the balls to play Petty so unfortunately I will have to vomit my through the game watching Oscar spud it up. I can't believe we have our very own Zac Dawson.

Was dat Aristotle Oanassis?

Frost( 192cm) is listed as only marginally shorter than Weidemann ( 193cm) and has a body and agility far better suited to pinch hitting in the ruck.

May comes in for anyone, and plays in defense, whilst Frost relieves Max in the ruck and allows Weidemann to stay up forward and avoid heavy body collisions in the ruck.

Not a chance 'joeboy'...

Frost has been tried there before & failed.

...and you can't leave him forward when Max is in the ruck, again tried and a dismal failure.

Frost goes.

Agree 100%. Twice on the weekend he received the ball running at full speed and tried to change direction at full speed...both times were a complete failure. I have no doubt he tries his best but he is an athlete not a footballer. OMac is miles ahead as a footballer in my opinion. OMac is also a very underrated kick.

Ha Ha! They are only a couple of thousand years apart! But Onassis does have a quote which is quite appropriate for these times-

"Remember, things are only as bad as you think they are."  Of course he was a billionaire, so that was easy for him to say!

If vandenBerg is out for the season then suddenly the loss of Kent hurts even more.

Why?

Kent would likely be on the injury list all year anyway, and if we brought him in we'd get his usual one good game for three bad ones.

Don't start re-writing history now.

After reading Drunkin 's report I have settled on 3 changes. Weid and Spargo very lucky.

INS: MAY, KOLODJASHNIJ, PETTY

OUTS: O.MCDONALD, FROST, HORE

EMERG: STRETCH, BAKER, KEILTY, PREUSS

I'd be prepared to put money on your changing your mind at least once between now and team selection.

Hate to say it but I think Viney needs to be rested:  he played only about 2 1/2 quarters, when he tried to run it was barely trotting pace and when on field he didn't really impact the game.  He not only looked underdone, he looked injured.

We had 6-7 players whose on field time was managed down to about 3 quarters (surprisingly one of those was Jetta, hope he is ok) which puts enormous pressure on those that stay on longer than they should.  imv there is a limit to how many players in need of managed game time we take in.

Max needs help.  If Preuss plays as Goodwin suggested, it seems unlikely he can play 4 quarters (based on JLT) so who does he displace?  That depends if he goes forward or back when not in the ruck as we can't afford to have him on the bench for long stretches, especially if other players need managed game time.

Based on club report Lewis' omission was precautionary rather than an injury so wouldn't be surprised to see him in.

In:  May, Lewis, Preuss (as Goodwin signalled)

Out:  Frost, Hore (sadly as I don't like to see players given only one game), Viney

and, there would need to be some re-balancing in positions as Preuss/Vine aren't like-for-like

The team needs time to settle and develop cohesion so any other changes will need to wait.

I read somewhere today that Lewis is out for a month? Is that right?

On 3/23/2019 at 8:10 PM, titan_uranus said:

He didn't, really:

Brilliant ruckman Max Gawn played one of his poorest games in recent memory, being worked over by Port's duo of Paddy Ryder and Scott Lycett, while also copping plenty of physical attention.

Goodwin indicated he would look at bringing recruit Braydon Preuss into the side.

"It's something that we're used to. ‘Gawny’ gets targeted most weeks. Max will continue to get better," Goodwin said.

"He probably didn't play his best game today. We'll look to how we potentially support him better. We'll continually look at that as a match committee.

"Ultimately though, it's not something new. It's happened for a long time now. We'll just get better at it."

Thanks for that. @WERRIDEE has a bit of history with misinterpreting media and presenting his analysis as fact.

Meanwhile, I'd go Oscar out for May. Oscar was terrible on Hawkins because he's not quick enough to go with him. Frost is quick enough. Having Frost and May able to swing onto Hawkins will be handy, and then we'll need another defender with pace to counter Ratugolea.

Whilst I didn't think he was horrible, I'd also bring in Jeffy for Spargo.

ANB won't be dropped, but if KK was fit, I'd pull the trigger. ANB is still a very, very average footballer.

Tough decision there SJ swapping a player who could not get the ball with one who cannot kick it. I would stay with Viney we know he is good enough. Stretch hmm hardly ever best 22.

Does anyone know if the players are doing a light training session at old mates paddock on Friday? Or do they normally not train the day before a game?

Looks like they don't play after training on Thursday or Friday this year ET.

As much as I’d like to attend a session, I was sort of hoping they just took the whole week off.

I agree in terms of predictions. But as to your who is ready at Casey question, it feels like Keilty hasn't missed a beat in a long while. Behind Petty last year (when Petty proved to be far from ready) and behind Hore this year - but consistently delivers in the VFL when he doesn't have a head-cold and looked up to it the JLT. Not sure what the kid is supposed to do? He has to be getting close.

Lewis, if fit, first back in.  -  Hore out

May straight back. - OMc.

Hunt from wing or h/forward...  pushing up past the wing to run & carry, & chase.  To use his run & pace both ways,  between the arcs.

FB/ Jetta - May - Jones

HB/ Hibbo - Petty/Keilty - Lewis

CL/ Salem - Brayshaw - Fritta

HF/ Melksham - TMc - Hunt

FF/ Preuss - Weide - Spargo

R/ Gawn - Oli - Harmes

Int from/ Petracca - Sparrow - ANB - cWagner - jWagner - Stretch - Lockhart

Is he really.

I wouldn't bring Kolo in just yet, until the team has already found some mojo. He had a rough time with his own form with injuries at GCS, and form struggled.   Lets Not bring him into a struggling side, just for the sake of a week or two.

We have others who can run with the ball,  that can do the job, even if just short-term. I'd like to protect him initially.  Until he finds his way with us.  He is coming off some very sapping health issues.

A poor start in the team, could make things really tough for him to make a new go of it.  We're not in that desperate a position... atmo.

I don't wish to sound ungracious to Gold Coast, but the Melbourne that was struggling against PA is nothing like the Gold Coast that has been struggling all the time KK was with them. I don't know if he's ready to play, but if he is, he doesn't have to wait for the rest of the team to find form before he gets picked. It will still be a better team than what he has had to put up with over his career to date.

I still can't understand why the group thought is that Port won due to superior speed and we were tired etc.

If you watch the entire game closely, you'll see that almost all of their length of the ground runs came from mistakes or bad kicks inside our forward 50.

We had so many opportunities to put the game to bed early and again we didn't. ANB. Twice. Unbelievable.

Their first goal was from a brain fade from Harmes. Wasn't goal side of Boak at a stoppage from a throw-in at Ports 50. Unforgivable. It's under 15's stuff.

The theme we have is that once we're ahead, it's as if we lose composure, patience and system and just expect it'll happen.

They got easy goals early from our mistakes and then we just kept making them.

They took advantage in the ruck around the ground when Gawn was off so once they hit even with us at the coal-face, the difference was skill execution and nothing else.

Port's ability to hold the ball, draw players and then handball their way out of traffic was an enormous factor.

The only other thing I was stunned by was the complete lack of intensity, aggression and physicality from our entire midfield for the whole game and absolutely no protection for Gawn.

I could have sworn I heard our leaders say multiple times how much that prelim loss burnt and how it was going to spur them on all summer. And that's the level of intensity and aggression we get in round 1?

Unbelievable really.

How could you possibly choose to drop one or two when almost everyone should be playing at Casey this weekend?

Surprised we lost by 4 goals in the end.

Agree that mistakes hurt us. But when a 31 year old Travis Boak is burning everyone of our players off down the MCC wing, you know there's a problem.

A lot of our blokes were at a canter in the middle of the third.

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
