Interestingly, the player average is $362,471. The article shows how many players are in each income bracket.

Author's Assumptions on who the top earning players were in 2018:

Over $1.0m - Dustin Martin, Nathan Fyfe, Lance Franklin, Tom Lynch (Gold Coast), Jeremy Cameron and Tom Boyd. (6 players)

$900k - $1.0m - Nic Naitanui, Scott Pendlebury (2 players)

Other Highly paid - Dayne Beams, Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy, Patrick Dangerfield, Joe Selwood, Sydney's Josh Kennedy, West Coast's Josh Kennedy, and Jack Steven. (8 players)

Sizeable Deals - Steven May (@ Gold Coast'), Bryce Gibbs, Rory Sloane, Adam Treloar, Robbie Gray, Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Marcus Bontempelli, Luke Parker, Jarryd Roughead, Ben Brown, Jake Lever and Jesse Hogan also had sizeable deals in 2018. 

We don't have a player thought to be in the top 16 income earners.  That is good salary cap management by Josh Mahoney and makes it easier to keep our young guys.  Clearly we have a number of players could easily get that but thankfully have chosen to stay with us.

Team success is obviously critical for a club to retain its good players.  

If the MFC enjoys that success, it is going to put a strain on the salary cap as players become more valuable. 

That is a challenge for the club as compromise and balance become key ingredients of successful salary cap management whilst retaining your best list. 

What history has told us is that players are prepared to forgo money to remain at a successful  club. Dusty Martin is an example.  

There will always be star players that remain loyal and stay at an unsuccessful club (ie Flower/Jones), but it has become less the case over the years. 

There will always be the star player that leaves a successful club for money. Ablett is an example. But that is the exception rather than the rule.

For both club and player the one common ingredient is team success.  

Richmond must be very tight at the moment

the median salary which is probably more telling than the average is around $250k

Given that few players get to 100 games... (is it around 20%) it's certainly not life changing money for the bulk of the players.

All the more important to have another skill.

I enjoy ribbing my Bulldogs friend about Tom Boyd but they just point to his one decent game in the GF

yeah, not sure what they're paying Batman to play for them this year, but I doubt he comes cheap.

Tom Boyd got the best deal ever considering his output to date (ok so he played well in a GF but still)

Great if we have another target whos ear we have been whispering into for a while..

yeah it would be good. i'm not sure what he's on, but with Lewis almost definitely on his last year, we could more than likely pick up another good player for his contract value alone.

Max must be looking fwd to his next contract. Easily in most people's top five players...

Surely Nic Nat wouldn’t be getting his full contract though? Unless there’s nothing written into his contract about injuries and amount of games he has to play per year etc?

Just looking at the list of "high earners" is a warning for clubs thinking of paying big bucks to players on the basis of potential. 

Similarly, paying big bucks to players with an injury history.

I hope the Demons appropriately reward their young guns rather than go out and pay big bucks for a trade.

Interesting but dangerous point. If players' contracts include clauses where payment are reduced when players are injured, it puts unwanted pressure on players to return too early. That would be particularly troubling for players with concussion injuries.

I really like Jeremy McGovern, he is my favourite non MFC player, but to give him the 2nd biggest contract in the comp seems wrong. What do others think?

I agree. Loyalty should be rewarded. It appears to be an undervalued quality at times, and should be recognized. Keep the young boys together as the tight group they seem to be. Of course a Premiership is the best way to bond and be loyal to a club. A win for everyone. It would be nice to hear other players wish to play for Melbourne. This has never happened in all the time I have been supporting the Dees. Sometimes felt like we were the basket case of the AFL. At last things are looking up. Good days ahead!
