Preuss mistimed a lot of ruck jumps and surprisingly wasn't that strong in the contest either. he also seemed to tire after playing the first 20 minutes. i'm still unsure about how he fits into the side. next week will be the big test is suppose, Gawn will be back and I think the lions will play the 2 ruckmen also.

some of our smaller running types fumbled a lot, stuffed up and turned it over too much. blokes like Stretch, ANB, Hunt and the Wagners the main offenders. but most of those guys aren't best 22 anyway and will be playing in the 2's for most of the year anyway.

also i think Sparrow has a fair bit of development to do at Casey before he gets a game in the seniors. his kicking ain't flash.

YES !!!

I made that comment to myself during the second QTR. He has a timing issue when it comes to his jump, but thats something that can be worked on. We need to remember how few matches he has played.

He will play more senior games for us this year than Tyson would have. 

Plus people were screaming out for a solid back up for Max. Now we have one. Alright, he wasn't super for a first up practice match, but he is what we need long term.

We were pretty clearly outclassed in general play but with so many important names missing it’s fair to reserve judgement. Young defenders got exposed as you’d expect but given their experience levels I thought Kielty, Hore and even Petty showed they have something worth holding onto,

To win the clearances so convincingly without Max was a big feather in the cap. The value of centre clearances has jumped with the new 6-6-6. Throw Gawn and Viney into the mix and we’re very much in business.

I was a bit disapooonted to see Trac do his standard disappearing act after starting the game on fire. This is the year we need to see some consistency.

Forwardline overall was a bit meh. Weid again showed glimpses. Need to remain patient with his development but he will be a gun forward. Watching Rance ragdoll T Mac wasnt fun. Hoping for a better outing from Tommy next JLT. He looks like he needs the run. Clint mentioned in the gameday thread that we missed Melksham which is very true. His class, smarts and skill around goal was noticeably absent.

Middle tier players like Hunt and ANB were a bit disappointing but it’s JLT1. I like having Hunt out there as even his pressure acts can be invaluable, but I’d like to see some signs of further development which weren’t evident today.

A near full strength side will be one to be reckoned with this year, but on today’s evidence, we wouldn’t want our depth to be tested too often.

Went to the game to take a look. Not too worried. Lacked structure and lacked leadership. A few of our key players would have made a huge difference. Disappointments for me were Preuss, Petracca m, Neal Bullen and Tommy. The fringe players looked like fringe players. They looked lost.  There is no way they can ruck Preuss with Gawn. Tommy could not leap or run in his usual manner.  And Petracca is not fit enough to play 4q. He is a burst player and unless something changes he is going to be a wasted talent. I have to say that after quarter time the boys looked like they had turned off. Despite criticism by some, Spargo has a red hot go and is a team lifter. He’s a must for me. Brayshaw  has a fantastic work ethic and ball getter and has no fear, Harmes also. But there were many passengers. What ever his injury, Jeffy is not going to make it. Nothing has changed . Don’t kid ourselves though, the Tigers were only idling. They had a lot in reserve. Not much fiercely contested footy as you would expect in a practice match.

My concerns just observing the broadcast were Petracca's influence waning after quarter time. Preuss mis timing his jumps for hit outs. Hore kicking out from full back and ( apart from the torpedo ) not effectively clearing the backline. Our succumbing to increased Tigers forward pressure after quarter time which led to most of the turnovers and of their goals. Lack of perceived intensity into some of the 50/ 50 contests.

It's easy for me to make these comments and I couldn't run 5 metres on a day like today. There was so much to like from this game and all will benefit from the run. It's a Mickey Mouse practice match and the coaches are trialling a lot of players and tactics. Like many others I see no reason to panic just yet. We won't be playing every week in conditions which would kill a pig either. 

Overall, it was a good effort.

i'm giving preuss the benefit of the doubt, and presuming he was basically not playing for almost two quarters because he got a knock to his calf, rather than him blowing up after a quarter and a bit...cos for that first quarter he was pretty good, and when he was back on in the last we looked okay

at this point i'm telling myself 'it was 38 degrees out there, plus he's barely played senior football'

for the most part i thought we looked okay, but richmond when they have that a-grade midfield and run from defence up and going are seriously good - gotta remember they were premiers two years back and won more games in 2018 than that year

they'll be there or thereabouts this year, so to hold close enough to them for the most part was pretty good given how shallow our stocks were - i reckon missing 12 of best 25

we couldn't seem to get much overlap run going whatsoever - dunno whether it was heat or personnel-related, cos hunt and j wagner really didn't give much bounce from half-back when compared to hibberd and lewis

i loved the mid trio of oliver, brayshaw and harmes with trac and salem moving through it too - the idea of adding viney and jones to that rotation is genuinely exciting

This was an obvious pisstake for us given how many players didn’t play, who rucked for most of the second half, the backline setup and the fact that Frost took half the kick-ins *shudder*

Anyone getting worked up about losing by 2 goals in a practice match with 1/6th of our starting backline, and half of our starting midfield, against a full strength top 4 team, needs to get a life.

Oliver is a superb footballer. Like Dusty he is a rare talent. Not as flashy as Dusty but equally as effective. A footballers footballer.

Pretty impressed by the Dees considering the players we had out. How good is Clarry and Gus? Petty showed some good signs, Jordon showed some composure, Hore not as good as last week but still showing good signs. Hunt not as good this week but he still stays in the team, great chase down tackle highlight of the game and Keilty proved he can play ruck has a good leap on him and could be our answer to the 3rd ruck problem.

It's a fair comment @Deestar9 - he has been given a long contract to show his wares - so he wont be the finished article this year... Part of me rolls my eyes at his lumbering cumbersome movement - part of me is thrilled with his bohemoth throwing of bodies... but as long as he can clunk a few marks, jag some goals and give Max a good rest when required...

I'd just about bet my house on him playing somewhere in the ballpark of 8 - 16 games.  It's not about him being the best ruckman in the league and more about the chop out that he will give Max.  Max is an athletic freak for a guy his size, but many of the teams we will play this year will play two against him and he will be shot by Rd 15 if we don't provide some way of giving him a break.

Preuss is a very different beast to Max (with beast being an appropriate way to describe him), but he can still add heaps of value to the team.  If he can get in there and smash a few bodies around like big Mumford does for GWS, then that would be handy.

Conversely he has spent quite a few years on an AFL list to accumulate all those 8 games, with Goldstein who was a pretty capable ruck being there as a mentor.  Still rucks do typically take a lot longer to develop and hopefully the change of scenery will do him good.

Genuinely interested to read some thoughts on why some have Hunt’s game as disappointing. From the telly I didnt think he was as bad as some are suggesting. His numbers weren’t great but he never stopped chasing especially in the second and third when Richmond were cutting us to ribbons. I certainly didn’t think he turned the ball over as much as some others.

Maybe someone that attended can shed some more. Was he given a specific role on Rioli or the likes?

A good practice game hitout. Entertaining and high scoring despite appalling conditions. One thing that was obvious was that Richmond are better at maintaining structures and teamwork. We were sort of a dogs breakfast for the most. Poor disposal is a bugbear for some of our best still.  Some players appeared not quite ready or suffered from the heat. Tmac especially.  I was OK with Pruess. If he can click he will be a monster. Still raw and room for improvement. Not ready to lead as a No 1 ruckman but could cause all sorts of mayhem teaming up with Gawn. Oliver and Harmes look like an awesome combination.
