”In addition the following concessions may be introduced:
- increase the number of water carriers to run fluids
- increase the length of intervals to enable teams to leave the field for the shade of the rooms at each break ie. 25 minutes for 1⁄2 time and/or 10 minutes for 1⁄4 & 3⁄4 time
- further reduce length of quarters
- consider postponing or rescheduling games”

38 degrees forecast for Shepparton next Sunday

I forget what the AFL hot weather rules are but could the match be shortened etc?

They might extend the amount of players we have on the bench, plus they might extend a few of the breaks as well.

No injuries and some good footy will do me in that weather.  With their level of fitness it will be hard to gauge too much otherwise.

i'd say play earlier in the day. we only have a 6 day break before JLT2 as it is.

Yep.

And extra interchange numbers.   Games like this in the Pre season, can destroy plans for the year.

half our team won't be playing in this game, i suspect, with the vast majority of those who missed against the filth to skip this too

no may, jones, viney, lever, oliver, kk, melksham, hannan, t mac is a fair chunk of the side not playing already

so at least they won't be coming off a six day break IF they suit up then

lotsa rotations in this game i suspect

The club goes to train in Maroochydore in the heat and humidity to get used to it.

The players are much more conditioned than ever before.

The first 4 rounds in Perth are usually played in mid 30’s.

They’ll be fine but I recommend to whoever’s going to take extra beers.

Not sure what converting it to Fahrenheit does. They train when its 40 degrees and they'll play when its 36.

It's only 311.15 Kelvins.

harden up guys. it's not 45 or anything. its 38 and it'll probably be around 35 at the time they start playing and dropping by the minimum

I'd like to see you playing in that heat.
And it'll still be 38deg at 4 o'clock don't you worry about that.

No they don't. Ever.

For a start training is almost always in the morning.

And any day where the temp is even mid 30s they often make training even earlier.

If you can show me some evidence of the dees training in 40 degree heat i will be most impressed - not to mention very surprised.

JLT2 is vs Lions who also play their JT1 on Sunday, in the midday sun.  The forecast up there is only 29 but with 90' humidity.  JLT1 will be just as tiring for them so for JLT2 neither team is disadvantaged much as both have 6 day turnaround and poor weather conditions.  Anyway, they are practice games - we can practice playing in poor weather...

Hopefully sanity prevails and player welfare is taken care of when there are extreme weather conditions.

Edit:  Two SA teams scheduled to play JLT1 in 39' heat early in the afternoon so I suspect a few clubs will be talking to the AFL about starting times etc.  But any changes may depend on what the broadcasters are prepared to do.

And we should have clear goals what we want to see, particularly setting certain players clear KPIs for the day.  No points on offer, but a chance to set ourselves up for the year.  You cant win the flag in March, but you can lose it.  Systems and processes training, match fitness, and better defining Rd 1 Werridee’s best 22.  After that, look good enough to bag some more memberships as people climb on board!

Wow captain, I have been at 2 sessions, 39.4 midway through the session and 39.8 for last 15 minutes when they were doing repeat runs, do they count?

A question for our Qld members, does the Sunshine Coast / Gold Coast get much hotter than low 30's.  My recollection is that it tends to be pretty consistent around the 29c - 32 mark.  I think Melbourne could even experience more "Hot" days.

regardless 38 degrees is significantly hotter than the preparation most clubs can plan/cater for, plus it is dry heat which effects you differently.

Clarrie will likely need to be dipped in a bath of sunscreen every 15 min's to avoid 5 degree burns!!!

I spoke to the players, QLD is more humid, impacts their breathing, all like what it brings to the preaseson though

Had about 5 'really' hot sessions in Melb this year, I know I've been at all of them

The AFL are probably beholden to their broadcast partners and therefore this is not an option for them.

So once again the media is calling the shots because the AFL sold their control to them.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
