Totally agree. We now have an almost perfectly calibrated list.

Injuries permitting, and assuming a good pre-season (no Adelaide-esque hiccups), we should be a lock for the top 4 next year.

I continue to be super impressed with Mahoney, Viney and Taylor. The upgrading of the picks to secure two in the 20s was the icing on this trade period - did not see that coming, but shook my head in stunned satisfaction that they are just not missing a trick these days.

The MFC is oozing competence at the moment.

It makes his decision to go to Freo even more baffling: leaves a team on the brink of success for one at the bottom, takes only a three year deal and a pay cut.  Baffling.

Its no wonder we weren't able to get a better trade deal - much easier to get top picks if player is on a long-term multi $m deal.   Mahoney did a great job getting the deal he did.

What a great article, super proud of our club and the people involved with Jesse, the comments about the support and compassion shown by Goodwin and Mahoney prove that we are onto a winner with these two. I was very comfortable with the deal before reading this and now think we nailed it given the nature of why he wanted to leave putting us at a significant disadvantage at the negotiating table.  Very proud of our team at the moment ???

Whether or not it is an indicator of future on field form (the only thing that matters) is a different matter but something that was very reassuring in Jesse leaving was the response of his manager. 

Matt Bain said that they couldn't commend the MFC highly enough in their support of Jesse and that this wouldn't even be happening if we were based in Perth.

Compare that to the departures of Scully, Junior, Greeny, Frosty Miller, Beamer and Riv (with both Riv and Beamer taking potshots at people in the club after leaving). 

Sometimes it does feel like this club is a 7/11 for some of the others but the Mfc did the right thing with Watts and the Jesse case had many elements to it.

My disappointment is not just Jesse but losing Kent and Garletts form. 3 big goal kickers missing.

Many of the reasons seem to defy logic. The main one for me is why leave a well run club on the way up for a lowly club with limited delivery inside 50?

How many people at age 23 think the same way as when they were 17? I just wonder whether Hogan has lost the degree of interest in football that he had when we first recruited him. There's no shame in that. I'm pretty sure when I was 23 I would be embarrassed to still love doing the things I loved doing when I was 17. Moving clubs and States may well be what he needs to re-generate enthusiasm for the game. (And if he becomes a dominant player in the competition in 2019 I'll console myself with the thought that it would not have happened if he'd stayed with us.)

I think that's overstating Kent's historical performance. Yes, he kicked an average of 1 goal a game (63 games for 63 goals) but that works out at approx 10 goals per year over his 6 years with us.

Can we blame Mark Neeld for this. He got us Jesse, got us all excited about the nest big superstar forward. 

Look at least next year we won't have to put up with will he or won't he re-sign. He would have gone home, so at least we got the deal done now. 

Also after Melbourne games no longer will we have to read about his bad body language and him sooking on this site. 

But I wish Jesse all the best. He has been through more at the age of 23 then most of us have in a lifetime. He has lost his Dad and had a cancer scare and had injuries on the way. 

But good look under Ross Lyon. He has gone from being under a calm coach to Ross who seems to be demanding, gets angry and expects a lot from his players. 

 

Very sad to see him leave from a sentimental standpoint, but getting May is huge and I think gets us closer to a premiership in the next few years. 

 

Can't blame Jesse for wanting to move home after what he's been through and hope he doesn't get booed for it. Who knows after his 3 year contract he might decide he wants some success and try to come back as a free agent?

I think Melbourne have looked after Jesse admirably. I think Jesse respected that honourably.

He will be missed. He was my boy's favourite player. 

But for the sake of his wellbeing, I hope he finds balance in his life home in Perth and a happy career at Freo. I'll still cheer for you when you next front up at the G to receive a bath from the 2019 premiers. All the best.

Like many others here I am OK with this trade, although 12 months ago I would have been appalled.

Hoges has much more to offer but clearly we were faced with a player who was determined to go home. Weideman showed enough for us to take a punt on him and TMac supported by Jake M and maybe Frisch to go back to attack as our forward structure so that we could let Hoges go.

We at least got a monster defender for our trouble and if KadeK comes up trumps it's been a pretty reasonable return. Well done to the footy department in difficult circumstances.

Hoges farewell message showed some class too.

On another note, I don't actually think Hoges has done himself any onfield favours. Ross Lyon is not a coach that fosters much loyalty or confidence. Has all the warmth and charisma of a tiger snake.

he may be hit by the Ross Lyon reality bus. Why anyone would want to play under him God only knows. It will be interesting to see how it plays out given that there is a story behind Neale wanting out and i believe Fyffe isn't a popular captain.

If the MFC remains a Premiership contender for years to come, it wouldn’t suprise me one bit if Hogan returned for another stint.
