Perhaps Freo are simply trying to extract maximum value from Brisbane for Lachie Neale so they can meet Melbourne’s terms? I don’t see the point of getting wound up at Freo.

If we can get May + first round pick for Hogan, does anyone really care about the mechanations of the deal?

If it comes out publicly that Freo are offering a 3rd rounder only for Hogan, then it’s time to pick up the pitchforks.

pardon my ignorance... is he an outside or inside mid

Predominantly inside. Ranked fifth for clearances this season. He can snag a goal on occasion though.

I was hoping we might have been able to do that if we got pick 5 if Hogan goes. Maybe we could offer Adelaide pick 5 & 36 for picks 13, 16 & 21 (in points value about a 800 difference in our favor, but the move up the board negates that for Adelaide).

If we go after May, be able to give pick 11 (assuming we got 5 & 11), and then 21, while we'd get May, KK and picks 13 & 16.

Come on, isn't it more likely that they are being asked to make a final decision on a deal which is out of the ordinary.

Nah better to decide weeks ago before the results of his medical are known

You'd wait a year, in our premiership window, because you're unwilling to part ways with a draft pick that will almost certainly not have a dramatic impact on our side in the next 3 years?

Personally I'd just get it done if he wants to play for us.

AFL history is littered with clubs that thought they were close to a flag or the 'premiership window' as you call it, after playing a prelim and topping up. Not saying May isn't the right deal for us but it does pay to be cautious about what you get and who you give up. The FD has been pretty shrewd to date so I feel confident they'll do the right deal

if we lose hogan and gain May then our list has gone backwards this trade period.

You can feel that way now, but you can't be definitive on that.  What if, off the back of the trade, we win a flag in the next 2 years?  That makes the trade a massive win on all fronts.  You can't judge it now.

Without wishing to agree with olisik, playing that 'what if' game is not useful.  That could be said for any trade and there would be no point in having these discussions at all.

I think the Weller trade from last year has cooked Freo's brain

Febes, I think Freo is filled with echinoderms & cnidarians so I see no risk of them being fried.

As said I think the FD  know what they want and Freo know what they want. It has all be pre sorted and this will be the shuffle  before the 'offer' is put forward. I think MFC are in the driving seat , hence why Freo are keen to do the Draft shuffle.

I think Neil will go, Freo will shuffle with Adelaide then we will get the Picks required to snare May, KK and have a pick in the first round. That first round player needs to be a ready to go player with some good ball use. I suspect the recruiters have one in mind.

True, and I see the merits of that discussion, but I think it's short sighted and too generalistic to call a trade a 'fail' when it's barely gotten off the ground.  You can discuss how you feel uneasy or disappointed with what we receive, but you can't really call a trade a 'fail' from the moment it happens.  We just don't know that yet.

I want the Dees to take Pick 5 to the draft and use Pick 11 & 30 to land May and KK.

Thats assuming we get Pick 5, 11 & 30. Because that’s what I would be demanding of Freo.

We cannot do a straight swap pick 5 for May...

I understand GC will likely get a round 1 compo next year between pick 2-5 next year however IF we just waited until next year he could be ours for free.  Surely this needs to be taken into consideration?

It's clear their captain wants out, why would you want him on your list next year if he clearly wants nothing to do with the joint?

a pick between 10-15 is VERY fair for May.

I would be too. Connor Rozee or Bailey Smith would be my target with Pick 5.

@Drunkn167 is a contracted and required poster in 2019.

You're screwed now @Drunkn167.  When you have the public backing of the Administration Department, you're best to start clearing out your locker.

I'm tipping we'll get a 4th rounder for you.  It's not you, it's the industry.

GC are also on record as saying they’d prefer to move him if he doesn’t want to stay long term. I still think 11, 2019 first rounder and 33 for May and Kolo is slightly overs but allows us to keep 5

if we bring in May and keep 5 that’s a great result.

We have to get it first. Freo May trade it and then we have a decision to make it the trade is actually going to be acceptable at all

Statement time, indeed. Whilst I would like May in the team, we really do not need him. We do need Preuss and KK.

Agree for the most part. Preuss is really the one we need given the season can fall apart pretty quickly if Max goes down. Others would be great.

Problem with all the interconnected trades though is that they involve contracted players and clubs can hold on to Neale, Hogan and May. Deals typically get done in the end though and we still have a number of days to go.

The fact Freo have traded picks suggested they are getting ready for a Hogan deal and MFC must have given them some clear guidelines. Until then, don't expect May and Hogan to declare their hand either as they won't want to have egg on their faces. I will know Hogan is gone to Freo when the MFC roll out their 'Hogan to Freo' PR campaign to manage supporter angst

We will swap pick 5 or whatever we have to in order to get May.

We’ve expressed interest in the player, we appear to be willing to move one of our best players on in order to get him. This whole we could get him for free next year is BS.

How do you think it would look to May, his manager, GCS and the industry as a whole if we then turned around and effectively said “Steven, we made a commitment to you but please hang in there for a year, GCS want pick 5 we only want to give pick 11 so we can ‘win trade week’ and we reckon we won’t have to give up anything for you next year. So bigger win for us. K thx bye” ?

Reports we could now be getting picks 8 & 16, as Brisbane trading 5 to Adelaide for 8 & 16 (Crows want Izak Rankine who'll be gone by 8 as port now have pick 6), then on trading those to Freo for Neale, Freo than on trading those to MFC. (MFC has demanded two 1st round picks and those are first round picks).

Hope MFC demand 8 & 11 and not allow Freo to have the cake (Hogan, Lobb and pick 11) and eat it too.

Maybe get Jesse back in two seasons a la Trent Croad

This is not as crazy as it sounds. With contracts being worth nothing and players doing what they want I could see Jesse signing a 5 year deal with Freo then requesting a trade back to us in 2 years.

Me too. It’s gonna be Lever 2.0

I wonder if we bundle KK in that pick 5 trade. Maybe 5 for May and KK? And some late pick swaps?

If we get 5 and 11 I'd personally offer pick 11 and Frost.  Frost will become somewhat superfluous with May and Lever back in 2019 along with a developing Petty.  Some supporters love Frost, but I'd do the deal if it kept pick 5.

And how many picks to the Suns need ?  They need mature players, not pick after pick of kids that may leave in 3 years.

But I doubt my scenario will happen.

Would Freo do the Neale trade if we refused to let Hogan go for those picks? They'd be forced into a long-term rebuild with only picks 8,11,13,20 etc and Lobb!

The danger in being consistently pragmatic and making guarantees to players, is that clubs know you will give in somewhat and therefore negotiate with you on that basis. With the Lever trade and other lesser trades, clubs now know our trading philosophy I'm not sure longer term if it won't hurt us

How?

Unrestricted free agent, if they do finish near the bottom the AFL will give them a top 5 compo pick.

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
