Would the travelling emergencies head for the airport as soon as the game starts so they can play for Casey on Sunday?

    Another good September training. Hope this our pattern for the next few seasons. We are looking the part.

    Counted 36 in the main squad. Great to see so many ready to go at this time of the year.

    Lachlan Filipovic and Corey Maynard working with Crossy and Oskar Baker walking laps in the rehab squad.

    Pat Mckenna with the main squad as was Mitch King.

    The atmosphere seemed to be subdued with focus. Some joviality but mainly the session was taken seriously, by the players and coaching staff. The support crew tell me they are up and about in the “sheds”.

    The drills were done in the normal way. The emphasis appeared to be tackling then snapping goals and clean ball handling and disposal.

    The backs were kicking to short targets and moving the ball wide.

    The forwards were finding the player around the stick men, with some marking drills and leads across the front of the pack.

    The mids, quick hands, fast ball movement and talk.

    Plenty of goal kicking practice was done, snaps, sets and one step shots. Also some cumbing drills for our smalls.

    Noticed some players were encouraged to run hard and fast, linking together and creating fast ball movement through a corridor.

    During simulations, when the first mistake in offence happened, Goody pulled them together for a chat. As soon as we became a bit ferocious with our tackling the simulations ended (decision to minimise injuries). 

    Watched Alex Neal-Bullen and Bailey Fritsch getting extra instructions at tackling.

    The marking bags were used by lots of the  players as was some contested high balls encouraging spoils and marks.

    Sam Frost getting some great barrels out of the goal square (hit 5-6 in a row).

    I thought the players looked in good condition.

    There is a push for selection with Jay Kennedy-Harris, Bernie Vince, Joel Smith, Jeff Garlett  and Cam Pederson training well.  

    I didn't notice any of the niggles in our squad. Though read that others saw that Oscar McDonald and Tom Bugg had something.

    The crowd was large with lots of red and blue about, thanks for the atmosphere created by the supporters.

    The staff and volunteers put a good day on for us, thank you for your efforts.

    Hoping for our best game of the season.

    As an aside, he also talks about the noise at 'Boo Stadium'.  The club has strategies in place (as per other hostile games eg Adelaide, WCE) to help players deal with the 'silence' and generate their own enthusiasm.

    One thing I’ve been thinking about is the potential for the club to start using signals from the bench to players or from player to player.

    Baseball use signals, College Football use signals and card schemes, seems like a no brainer for reduction in runners but something to think about for stadiums like Burswood (and I’m sure new stadiums will look to see how they can have a similar noise).

    Possibly not for this weekend but should well and truely be in the future thinking to get an advantage.

    I fully expect to be the most hoarse I have ever been on Saturday night. 

    A handful of Demons going absolutely apeshit will be a wonderful thing.

    Mahoney alluded to signals in the interview.  Said something like the players can't hear each other and will be waving hands etc.  For obvious reasons, he didn't elaborate on the 'etc'. 

    Will be interesting to watch how this plays out on the field.  Not sure TV cameras will pick them up so we may need to rely on our trusty DL's to report back on what they see.

     

     

    What is obvious from Mahoney's interview is the club is leaving no stone unturned.  We really learnt a lot from hostile environments like Geelong, Adelaide, WCE late in the season.

    My daughter attended this morning, enjoyed the session, particularly pleased with getting some attention from Gus at the end. She mentioned Harmes looked a bit sore walking off at the end, did any other track watchers pick anything up with him?

    Courageous reporting (not). Means any number upwards of zero.

    If you watch Harmes, he always looks like he is sore when he walks, I think it's just his gait.

    At the recent world cup in Russia the Colombians and to a slightly lesser extent the Iranians resurrected the vuvuzela together with the hand pumped air horn. It was not pleasant as a spectator I can assure you.

    REmember the late 80’s training sessions in Sept , parked illegally , sessions were late afternoon , no 103O sessions midweek . Tuesday and Thursday.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
