WERRIDEE 5,641 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Went to the game. Started off in a blaze of glory kicking the first 4 and then it was all Box Hill. Really disappointed in the way the Dees played I thought Smith was the only one to hold his head high. Hutchins is a terrible captain can only play full back he's a terrible forward. Got smashed in the ruck it almost cost us the game last week and it cost us this week. Don't know what Lefau gives the side would prefer King he could not have done any worse than the other ruckman. Disappointed with Keilty made too many mistakes for my liking. Wagner and Lockhart didn't do their chances any good with getting picked up in the draft not their best days. Wagner is a plodder. Garlett was Garlett flashy but really didn't do a lot. Kennedy Harris is not up to AFL level nor is Bugg. Vince retired at the right time. Fritsch was classy rarely wastes the ball. Should be playing AFL. Petty showed some promise with a few great marks. Pedo was Pedo tried hard but didn't have a great game. 2 Grand Final losses in 3 years it's hard to swallow. 2 Quote
Skin Deeamond 339 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Another great loss for the Demons. With the AFL losers forced to watch. How many Grand Finals have Collingwood been in since 1964? How many have MFC been in? useless club 1 Quote

whatwhat say what 23,880 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 god i'd forgotten wagner wagner - he's sort of neither here nor there as a rebounding defender cos he's a) not quick and b) not a good user of the ball, which puts him in that standard position of being a good 'effort' player who tries and tries but is extremely limited and as such has no true effect on the play 2 Quote
RalphiusMaximus 6,112 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 I have to say, this has not been a good weekend for Aussie Rules, and in particular the officials. Last weekend in the SANFL we saw a team play 19 men and get away with it because the complaint came from the bench and not the captain and by the time the captain was made aware of it the extra man had been pulled off the field again. Today we saw some Casey run out to an early lead only for Box Hill's best three players to put in a superhuman effort of one-sided umpiring to drag their team over the line. All in all a terrible look for the state leagues. 2 Quote

Yes - they actually favoured Casey in the second half by 17 to 12 but the Hawks still finished well in front on the day. Still, while the umpiring affected Casey’s lead at half time, it was by no means the main or only reason for the defeat. KC’s report later today will cover the player stats. 1 Quote

I can probably give you 2 causes of the loss, Garlett and the Captain. For the second final in a row the Captain went possessionless or close enough to it . 1 Quote
poita 3,945 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 After a strong start, a Casey loss looked inevitable from about half way through the second quarter. How you expect to win a game with no ruckman and one marking forward (because the other is getting flogged in the ruck) is beyond me. The umpiring was abysmal, but Casey had far too many passengers. Fritsch is far too good for that level, and Petty showed some good signs, but the cupboard is otherwise completely bare in terms of players who could make the senior side better in 2019. I was really disappointed with Hunt's lack of impact, particularly in the second half, and Kennedy-Harris disappeared completely after quarter time. Relying on players such as Bugg and Wagner who have atrocious foot skills to deliver the ball inside 50 is a recipe for disaster. I hope the FD is prepared to do some major pruning of our list this year - retaining guys like McKenna, King, Filipovic, Bugg and Garlett would be a horrible decision. 1 Quote

That’s why I watched it too - I support the MFC and it’s players. Just saying it didn’t cut much, because I feel no connection with that club. I know others will feel differently, especially folks like drunkn who have a personal connection and others that go along and watch a lot, but for me it’s for interest only. Fair enough. I go very occasionally to watch them and feel some connection but mainly because of the MFC listed players. It does mean something as it's reflective of our depth, add to that the jumper and the demons name and it's hard for me not to feel a bit connected Quote
Demonland 74,465 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 HEARTBREAK WEEKEND by KC from Casey The Casey Demons led the 2018 Grand Final from the beginning until the 13 minute mark of the final quarter of the VFL Grand Final at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon but were overrun in the finish by the Box Hill Hawks. The defeat was the team’s second in a season-decider in three seasons and marked yet another heartbreaking climax to a year of many highlights for the club. The Demons had opened the game in promising fashion moving the ball with great speed and converted four times to take a 25 point lead in the early going. They were ferocious with their tackling with 20 in the first term alone and by half time had shown up the effort of their senior counterparts by exceeding their total tally of tackles from the day before. Casey dominated proceedings in most facets of the game for almost all of the opening half but some crucial shots at goal from easy range. One of the few statistics where they were bested was the free kick count - one of the factors that seemed to keep the Hawks in the game. When the siren sounded to signal the start of the long break the Demons led by 23 points but an after-the-siren goal to Box Hill reduced the lead and gave the Hawks great hope leading into the final half. The rejuvenated Hawks lifted their game after the break and they gradually clawed back at Casey’s lead, assisted by their complete dominance in the ruck where they smashed the undersized Casey ruck division through the agency of Pittonet who amassed an enormous 57 hit outs and took 7 big marks. This division has been problematic for the Demons all season and was exacerbated of late by the poor form of Mitch King who was not selected for the finals and the injury to young Lachie Filipovic. In their stead, Cam Pedersen, Tim Smith and Mykelti Lefau who were gallant in the preliminary final, simply struggled this week. And so, when it came to the final term of the biggest match of the season, Casey faltered and was unable to produce one of those stirring finishes that got it through a number of the 12 consecutive victories of earlier in the season. Some of its name players were unable to produce: there were far too many passengers and a number will no doubt be forced to look elsewhere in 2019. Bayley Fritsch was an exception. He provided plenty of run off the back line and showed great application and heart to prove the judgement of the senior Demon selection panel off key when they omitted him from the team that went to Perth. The defensive work of Declan Keilty and Harry Petty was excellent in the first half and both have potential as key position defenders. Bernie Vince was solid and creative in his swan song game and Tom Bugg worked hard for four quarters. The Casey listed crew were mainly underwhelming. Corey Wagner worked hard as did Jay Lockhart while Jimmy Munro tackled strongly as usual. Unfortunately, they weren’t as effective or consistent as they have been for most of the season. The scoreboard when the final siren sounded heralded yet another disappointment in the Demons’ Heartbreak Weekend. There’s always next year.
