Chook 15,069 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 (edited) Despite what it loses in humour, this AFL article gains many points for brevity over Supermercado's The Great Dee-pression. Still...1-star. Would not live through again. Edited September 3, 2018 by Chook Quote

They have caused us so much grief over such a long period, and loved kicking us when we were down. ? Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 Jesus I’m so depressed reading this. The sheer number of tragic deaths and health issues alone, is enough to make you burn all the ladders and black cats in sight. How far we have come!!! 1 Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 Great article. Important to remind ourselves where we’ve been. Two things that really stick out: - Why on earth did we give Schwab a 3 year contract in 2012? - I used to defend the Bailey/Neeld eras by pointing out all the terrible injuries and uncontrollables (Jurrah and Scully) but look at that first year of Roos and tell me he wasn’t dealt a crappy hand! 4 Quote

Little Goffy 14,963 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 If there was a way to go digging through these last twelve years, surely a collection of Martin Flanagan's various articles about us, as a club and as fans, would be the best option? Only writer I've ever felt was describing a Melbourne Demons I recognise. Quote

Deesprate 1,324 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 Putting aside the numerous disasters and the non football side of the business (PJ what an Appointment) is how good our recruiting has been since the Toump disaster. Josh Mahoney has run a great football department and our recruiting has beenalmost100% spot on. The contrast to our earlier disasters is truly amazing. I think we can beat the cats but irrespective in the longer term we are going in two different directions. 1 Quote
dazzledavey36 56,334 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 I still shudder when i hear the name Cameron Schwab.. Hopefully he's not allowed within 50m of our football club ever again. 1 Quote

While we have a ways to go to get there, prepare to see a cavalcade of selfies donning a bad Melbourne scarf and self promoting tweets should we get close to a grand final. Quote
Pates 9,697 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 (edited) Fans of Geelong, Sydney, and Hawthorn should have a read of that to understand why this means so much to us long suffering fans. Especially the ones that are 20 and under, they’re the worst because pretty much all they’ve known is success. Edited September 3, 2018 by Pates Quote

Conversely I’m always dead impressed to see the number of under 25 year olds who support Melbourne. They have only known, as Goodwin said, misery 1 Quote

DemonOX 8,857 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 Bloody hell it must be the week to bring up all the past crap for the last 12 years. What a nightmare it has been but for the love of god I don’t need the reminders. We have all lived through it and imo we have the best supporter base in the afl. We have stuck fast with this club and deserve every success we get. Go Demons. 1 Quote
La Dee-vina Comedia 17,137 Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 One thing that struck me reading that article was the timing of Josh Mahoney's appointment and our improvement. I wonder whether I've not fully appreciated Mahoney's role in our rise. It may just be a coincidence of timing (to use a cliche, he was in the right place at the right time) or conversely Mahoney has been a major but perhaps unheralded reason for where we now find ourselves. 1 Quote

If we'd missed the finals again I couldn't have gone near it. Still feel guilty for what I put my kids through. Edited September 4, 2018 by Brownie 1 Quote
