This is the most ridiculous sentiment imaginable.

They need to do if for each other.  By extension the whole club will rejoice.

Probably because the supporter base was founded in MCC members who had a sense of entitlement way before the millenials

See you all at training Thursday morning, uncondtional support

If that’s your thoughts I have no idea what you’re doing coming onto a MFC member/supporter forum.

Yep, some serious silver spooners round here.

Because I'm still playing after nearly 20 years of senior footy and seeing a lot of new kids pass through.

People join football clubs and join a family of sorts. Sure, there are pictures on the wall, but you know that deep down you don't really care about the achievements of your great-great-uncle. But you do care about your brother, sister, father, mother etc. because you share so many experiences together.

I'd played for 13 seasons before I won a flag. That flag meant so much to me because of the long series of failures that led me there and I could see how much it meant to the supporters that followed us and ex-team mates that I shared the failures with. But I didn't care about what happened before I started, despite the photos on the wall and the old club legends around the place.

The players that joined just before the flag didn't care about the previous 13 seasons, but they cared about winning it together as a team. The previous years only meant something to them because they knew that they meant something to me, and they cared about me because I was one of their team mates.

And the kids that joined this year think that the 5 year premiership reunion sounded like a fun excuse for a p!ss up!

Ok fair enough. But if i was in your position, I would care about what had gone on before and i would also enjoy the new history being created in front of me.

Each to their own AoB

We will all be celebrating the 13th if we are still here!!

Disagree. It means a lot.

It isn't a substitute for winning a final, or making a GF, or winning a flag. No one who has enjoyed the last 48 hours would suggest otherwise.

But for those of us who have supported the club for the past 12 years, where we "enjoyed" winning 2 games per year, to make the finals and to cast aside the past 12 years of being laughed at means a whole lot.

Buried in last Sunday’s GAMEDAY thread, I made the comment at half time:-

“We are poised for a big third quarter - they don’t call it the premiership quarter for nothing and this is it for us.

“We look the better team and I think we are ready to exploit their weaknesses.”

As it turned out I was wrong in that we didn’t win the third quarter but I was right about the final outcome and it was achieved with a positive mindset in the last 10 minutes. Now that we’re back on home turf we really do need to harness this among supporters so they turn up in their numbers and really support them with noise.

We were like that in our golden ere.

For sure, we need to bring out the demon in everyone. Bring it on.

Yes, I believe putting heat on the coach (let’s not use the term “questioning” - that’s not what most do) at this stage in the process, with our record as it stood early in the season when the thread was started, was a clear cut case of supporter not supporting.

If that is the case why wasn't/isn't the thread closed down?  Or offending posters banned?

TBH I thought 80% of the commentary in that thread was reasonably presented.  The other 20% was/is a slog fest between the doomsayers and the fanboys.

The op called for support of players so maybe the negative threads about individual players should also be shut down?  It is sickening sometimes to read the vitriol directed to players.  It is often the same posters who bag the same players over and over again.

100%.
Seen us in 2 GFs and watched us get humiliated in both.

I would still like to hear from the op to support his claims:

- which supporters have jumped off or are not supporting the current crop of players and coaches?  (The evidence of support during their current reign of the last 5 years overwhelmingly shows the opposite).

- Is he only referring to DL?   (Players or coaches don't read it and it is not representative of the 40,000 members and 195,000 supporters who do not post nor read here).  If only DL the fix is easy - delete the threads/ban the posters who show 'poisonous negativity' (and ban their antagonists).

- what supporter behaviours he is looking for?

One more question.  Is the op using the 'Goodwin...' thread as the basis for this thread?  Then best to refer directly to it rather than window dress it in a round of 'supporter bashing'.   Perhaps the op is a shot across the bow to DL posters...

I find it bizarre that such a thread and op is written when there is so much euphoria on DL, in the media and around the team.

We may not have won the quarter but imo we won the mental battle. Every time they won a centre clearance, they scored a goal, but we kept it even and often scored the other way. That was deflating for them. Even when they hit the front you could tell that the Eagles were down on confidence. We won that third quarter in the next best way.

Oldest and greatest football club in Australia instrumental in inventing the game that has an amazing history.  Only club to win 5 flags in 6 years.   Only club to win three in a row twice. We’ve just had 5 bad decades that’s all.

I think our support and membership numbers are quite strong and there is a positive there considering how poor we have been. Richmond only had 50k members in 2012. The challenge for us is that we have a small overall support base, so we need to increase that commitment ratio. Further, the high percentage of Melbourne supporters being members suggests the base has a high purchase intent, meaning game day and club sponsorship should be strong once we start playing consistently good football and finals. The downside is that from a broadcasting point of view, unless we are performing well, there is little way to justify primetime fixturing. People carry on about Carlton but harsh reality is that they *must* bring in viewers. No one wants to watch Melbourne unless they're performing.

What does this even mean? Supporters can’t get to every training session and that makes them what?

Do you belong to every club forum or attend games from other clubs to make a statement like that?

Demonland you’ve got to love it!

We cover all ends of the spectrum, far right to the extreme left and everything in between!

Positive, negative, supportive, antogonistic, everything and someone called Ethan!

All I know is it’s a heap better when we win!

So enjoy the moment, in the eight after 12, let’s just keep winning!

You have to be kidding. People jump off on a weekly basis, that’s why there’s a “is Goodwin the right man for the job” thread still on the front page of this forum. That is a classic example of lightning a bunsen burner under the coach’s arse for absolutely no good reason.

That's a good example but any post match thread after a loss this year will do.

Constructive critical analysis is always welcome and posters like @Lucifer's Hero do provide it in that thread and others.  But there is too much poisonous negativity where posters let their own personal historical demons over-ride their reason.  Some pause, reflection and perspective would benefit these posters and the club.

Here's a quick sample from just a few pages in the Goodwin thread @Nasher references.  I'll call it out for what it is.

Quote

Goodwin is coaching a side that is mentally weak, has poor leaders, has no defence, fails repeatedly in big games, finds new stupid ways to lose games we should win, has one manic style game plan with no ability to stop other teams scoring when it matters.

Quote

We are the easiest team to play because any coach..and half of this forum have you sussed.

Quote

It is not naive, it is simply that week by week we see a bold football team becoming a carcass.

Quote

I don’t hold the same view, i think Goodwin has been in the drivers seat long enough now, to see that this job he has taken on is beyond his capabilities. I have said it before, the MFC is a club that has special needs. We have been down to long for a Rookie Coach.

Quote

Doing the same thing over and over and over. Same mistakes for over a year now, 18 months. He’s the poorest tactical coach in the comp by a mile. He’ll see out his contract but he needs to lift big time

Quote

Perhaps he will quit - sick of the softness of this group!

Quote

Say goodbye to 2018.

Quote

No. He's an inarticulate, dull, uninspiring man who surrounds himself with inexperienced coaches and yes men like Craig Jennings. McCartney and J.Viney have both been removed from the box this year, shortly after disagreements with Goodwin.

I think I'll support the club how I like and everyone else can do the same. There isn't anyone on this forum who does not support or love the club. For me, over 30 years of paying memberships, constant donations during down times, voluntary work during mid 000's, travelling to every away game interstate which is expensive (until this year). For anyone who questions my support can get stuffed and I certainly wouldn't question anyone else's. Its a football "forum" FFS, not a lovey dovey fan boy page.

I will continue to call it as I see it, both good and bad, just as I will continue to support this club until the day I die. Oh and seeing some of my posts were quoted from the Goodwin thread, I called it as I saw it, and it's hard to argue with most of those things "at the time." It certainly didn't stop me attending games and cheering on the boys, just like others who posted in that thread. Weird post TBH.

Oh and this post: "Goodwin is coaching a side that is mentally weak, has poor leaders, has no defence, fails repeatedly in big games, finds new stupid ways to lose games we should win, has one manic style game plan with no ability to stop other teams scoring when it matters." Most of it was actually true. Oh and don't forget to counter it with the positive posts where I finally gave Goodwin some credit about changing and am happy for the club to bring in experienced assistants to help him next year.

As for support, watch the Dees fans come out in droves for our finals, after what this club has put us all through, I respect the fact that they all keep coming back.

I think some need to ease up on the Koolaid or whatever they're imbibing and start understanding that there are NO RULES to supporting. If the manner that some do either offends or whatever...then I suggest to these Princesses they just suck it up.

Works both ways...some find it nauseating that mediocrity is not only condoned...it's actually encouraged by some.

This is a world of differing views. Football is no different, why should it be.

Probably the only time it somewhat aligns is when things go swimmingly. Even then some will choose an ale...others a Red and Cheese.

Nothing wrong with either or anything in between.

Some want to own the narrative. You don't. Live with it.

I am with you S febes

the comment regarding MCC/MFC supporters was frankly offensive Many are very very long term supporters and have given a lot of money to the club.

I like you, go to as many games and functions as I can including interstate matches.

I also will support the club in any way I want without the  thought police trying to cohearse me into some "Ideal supporter Mould"

Great post by the way.

Being positive and supportive isn't accepting mediocrity.

Turning up to games is great, buying memberships is great, no one denies it's been a tough slog since our last flag and particularly the last decade. Letting your anxiety and frustration out on the current group of players (they can definitely feel the crowd vibe out on the G) is not being supportive. Throwing your hands up in the air and crying "same old Melbourne" is not being supportive. It's not a tough concept to grasp, I'm not sure why so many find it so difficult.

Some supporters:

One week:  Goodwin is shite, we'll never play finals, the game plan stinks, the players suck, it's the Norm Smith Curse!

Next week, after a win:  God the players have improved, reckon we can make Top 4, our recruiting has been sublime.

Rinse and repeat.  Support however you want, but if you do the above, then you contribute to the problems and the negativity that can permeate through a club.

unsure if your post was directed at me Dr as it mentions things from my post, but just to clarify, I have never let my anxiety or frustration out on any player at the games. I usually sit there quietly with radio in ear and cheer the good moments, I use Demonland to vent like many others, but am always supportive.

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
